In previous work (arXiv:0910.5714), we introduced the Privacy Approximation Ratio (PAR) and used it to study the privacy of protocols for second-price Vickrey auctions and Yaos millionaires problem. Here, we study the PARs of multiple protocols for both the disjointness problem (in which two participants, each with a private subset of {1,...,k}, determine whether their sets are disjoint) and the intersection problem (in which the two participants, each with a private subset of {1,...,k}, determine the intersection of their private sets). We show that the privacy, as measured by the PAR, provided by any protocol for each of these problems is necessarily exponential (in k). We also consider the ratio between the subjective PARs with respect to each player in order to show that one protocol for each of these problems is significantly fairer than the others (in the sense that it has a similarly bad effect on the privacy of both players).

Set-based estimation has gained a lot of attention due to its ability to guarantee state enclosures for safety-critical systems. However, it requires computationally expensive operations, which in turn often requires outsourcing of these operations to cloud-computing platforms. Consequently, this raises some concerns with regard to sharing sensitive information and measurements. This paper presents the first privacy-preserving set-based estimation protocols using partially homomorphic encryption in which we preserve the privacy of the set of all possible estimates and the measurements. We consider a linear discrete-time dynamical system with bounded modeling and measurement uncertainties without any other statistical assumptions. We represent sets by zonotopes and constrained zonotopes as they can compactly represent high-dimensional sets and are closed under linear maps and Minkowski addition. By selectively encrypting some parameters of the used set representations, we are able to intersect sets in the encrypted domain, which enables guaranteed state estimation while ensuring the privacy goals. In particular, we show that our protocols achieve computational privacy using formal cryptographic definitions of computational indistinguishability. We demonstrate the efficiency of our approach by localizing a mobile quadcopter using custom ultra-wideband wireless devices. Our code and data are available online.
The huge computation demand of deep learning models and limited computation resources on the edge devices calls for the cooperation between edge device and cloud service by splitting the deep models into two halves. However, transferring the intermediates results from the partial models between edge device and cloud service makes the user privacy vulnerable since the attacker can intercept the intermediate results and extract privacy information from them. Existing research works rely on metrics that are either impractical or insufficient to measure the effectiveness of privacy protection methods in the above scenario, especially from the aspect of a single user. In this paper, we first present a formal definition of the privacy protection problem in the edge-cloud system running DNN models. Then, we analyze the-state-of-the-art methods and point out the drawbacks of their methods, especially the evaluation metrics such as the Mutual Information (MI). In addition, we perform several experiments to demonstrate that although existing methods perform well under MI, they are not effective enough to protect the privacy of a single user. To address the drawbacks of the evaluation metrics, we propose two new metrics that are more accurate to measure the effectiveness of privacy protection methods. Finally, we highlight several potential research directions to encourage future efforts addressing the privacy protection problem.
In this paper, we present a general multiparty modeling paradigm with Privacy Preserving Principal Component Analysis (PPPCA) for horizontally partitioned data. PPPCA can accomplish multiparty cooperative execution of PCA under the premise of keeping plaintext data locally. We also propose implementations using two techniques, i.e., homomorphic encryption and secret sharing. The output of PPPCA can be sent directly to data consumer to build any machine learning models. We conduct experiments on three UCI benchmark datasets and a real-world fraud detection dataset. Results show that the accuracy of the model built upon PPPCA is the same as the model with PCA that is built based on centralized plaintext data.

Healthcare blockchains provide an innovative way to store healthcare information, execute healthcare transactions, and build trust for healthcare data sharing and data integration in a decentralized open healthcare network environment. Although the healthcare blockchain technology has attracted broad interests and attention in industry, government and academia, the security and privacy concerns remain the focus of debate when deploying blockchains for information sharing in the healthcare sector from business operation to research collaboration. This paper focuses on the security and privacy requirements for medical data sharing using blockchain, and provides a comprehensive analysis of the security and privacy risks and requirements, accompanied by technical solution techniques and strategies. First, we discuss the security and privacy requirements and attributes required for electronic medical data sharing by deploying the healthcare blockchain. Second, we categorize existing efforts into three reference blockchain usage scenarios for electronic medical data sharing, and discuss the technologies for implementing these security and privacy properties in the three categories of usage scenarios for healthcare blockchain, such as anonymous signatures, attribute-based encryption, zero-knowledge proofs, verification techniques for smart contract security. Finally, we discuss other potential blockchain application scenarios in healthcare sector. We conjecture that this survey will help healthcare professionals, decision makers, and healthcare service developers to gain technical and intuitive insights into the security and privacy of healthcare blockchains in terms of concepts, risks, requirements, development and deployment technologies and systems.
In the emph{shuffle model} of differential privacy, data-holding users send randomized messages to a secure shuffler, the shuffler permutes the messages, and the resulting collection of messages must be differentially private with regard to user data. In the emph{pan-private} model, an algorithm processes a stream of data while maintaining an internal state that is differentially private with regard to the stream data. We give evidence connecting these two apparently different models. Our results focus on emph{robustly} shuffle private protocols, whose privacy guarantees are not greatly affected by malicious users. First, we give robustly shuffle private protocols and upper bounds for counting distinct elements and uniformity testing. Second, we use pan-private lower bounds to prove robustly shuffle private lower bounds for both problems. Focusing on the dependence on the domain size $k$, we find that robust approximate shuffle privacy and approximate pan-privacy have additive error $Theta(sqrt{k})$ for counting distinct elements. For uniformity testing, we give a robust approximate shuffle private protocol with sample complexity $tilde O(k^{2/3})$ and show that an $Omega(k^{2/3})$ dependence is necessary for any robust pure shuffle private tester. Finally, we show that this connection is useful in both directions: we give a pan-private adaptation of recent work on shuffle private histograms and use it to recover further separations between pan-privacy and interactive local privacy.
