We show that pseudo-spin 1/2 degrees of freedom can be categorized in two types according to their behavior under time reversal. One type exhibits the properties of ordinary spin whose three Cartesian components are all odd under time reversal. For the second type, only one of the components is odd while the other two are even. We discuss several physical examples for this second type of pseudo-spin and highlight observable consequences that can be used to distinguish it from ordinary spin.

We measure the renormalized effective mass (m*) of interacting two-dimensional electrons confined to an AlAs quantum well while we control their distribution between two spin and two valley subbands. We observe a marked contrast between the spin and valley degrees of freedom: When electrons occupy two spin subbands, m* strongly depends on the valley occupation, but not vice versa. Combining our m* data with the measured spin and valley susceptibilities, we find that the renormalized effective Lande g-factor strongly depends on valley occupation, but the renormalized conduction-band deformation potential is nearly independent of the spin occupation.
We describe a formulation of the group action principle, for linear Nambu flows, that explicitly takes into account all the defining properties of Nambu mechanics and illustrate its relevance by showing how it can be used to describe the off-shell states and superpositions thereof that define the transition amplitudes for the quantization of Larmor precession of a magnetic moment. It highlights the relation between the fluctuations of the longitudinal and transverse components of the magnetization. This formulation has been shown to be consistent with the approach that has been developed in the framework of the non commutative geometry of the 3-torus. In this way the latter can be used as a consistent discretization of the former.

We study the thermodynamic properties of the two-component $2+1$-dimensional massive Dirac fermions in an external magnetic field. The broken time-reversal symmetry results in the presence of a linear in the magnetic field part of the thermodynamic potential, while in the famous problem of Landau diamagnetism the leading field dependent term is quadratic in the field. Accordingly, the leading term of the explicitly calculated magnetization is anomalous, viz. it is independent of the strength of the magnetic field. The Stv{r}eda formula is employed to describe how the anomalous magnetization is related to the anomalous Hall effect.

In a topological quantum computer, braids of non-Abelian anyons in a (2+1)-dimensional space-time form quantum gates, whose fault tolerance relies on the topological, rather than geometric, properties of the braids. Here we propose to create and exploit redundant geometric degrees of freedom to improve the theoretical accuracy of topological single- and two-qubit quantum gates. We demonstrate the power of the idea using explicit constructions in the Fibonacci model. We compare its efficiency with that of the Solovay-Kitaev algorithm and explain its connection to the leakage errors reduction in an earlier construction [Phys. Rev. A 78, 042325 (2008)].
We present a theory of spinor superfluidity in a two-species heteronuclear ultracold fermionic atomic gas consisting of arbitrary half-integer spin and one-half spin atoms. In particular, we focus on the magnetism of the superfluid phase and determine the possible phases in the absence of a magnetic field. Our work demonstrates similarities between heteronuclear fermionic superfluids and spinor Bose-Einstein condensates at the mean-field level. Possible experimental situations are discussed.
