It is well known that Thomson scattering of CMB photons in galaxy clusters introduces new anisotropies in the CMB radiation field, but however little attention is payed to the fraction of CMB photons that are scattered off the line of sight, causing a slight blurring of the CMB anisotropies present at the moment of scattering. In this work we study this {it blurring} effect, and find that it has a non-negligible impact on estimations of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect: it induces a 10% correction in 20-40% of the clusters/groups, and a 100% correction in $sim 5$% of the clusters in an ideal (noiseless) experiment. We explore the possibility of using this blurring term to probe the CMB anisotropy field at different epochs in our Universe. In particular, we study the required precision in the removal of the kSZ that enables detecting the blurring term $-tau_T delta T / T_0$ in galaxy cluster populations placed at different redshift shells. By mapping this term in those shells, we would provide a tomographic probe for the growth of the Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect (ISW) during the late evolutionary stages of the Universe. We find that the required precision of the cluster peculiar velocity removal is of the order of 100 -- 200 km s$^{-1}$ in the redshift range 0.2 -- 0.8, after assuming that all clusters more massive than 10$^{14}$ h$^{-1}$ M$_{odot}$ are observable. These errors are comparable to the total expected linear line of sight velocity dispersion for clusters in WMAPV cosmogony, and correspond to a residual level of roughly 900 -- 1800 $tau_T mu$K per cluster, including all types of contaminants and systematics. Were this precision requirement achieved, then independent constraints on the intrinsic cosmological dipole would be simultaneously provided.

We present the science case for mapping several thousand galaxy (proto)clusters at z=1-10 with a large aperture single dish sub-mm facility, producing a high-redshift counterpart to local large surveys of rich clusters like the well-studied Abell catalogue. Principal goals of a large survey of distant clusters are the evolution of galaxy clusters over cosmic time and the impact of environment on the evolution and formation of galaxies. To make a big leap forward in this emerging research field, the community would benefit from a large-format, wide-band, direct-detection spectrometer (e.g., based on MKID technology), covering a wide field of ~1 square degree and a frequency coverage from 70 to 700 GHz.
The Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect is a large-angle modulation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), generated when CMB photons traverse evolving potential wells associated with large scale structure (LSS). Recent efforts have been made to reconstruct maps of the ISW signal using information from surveys of galaxies and other LSS tracers, but investigation into how survey systematics affect their reliability has so far been limited. Using simulated ISW and LSS maps, we study the impact of galaxy survey properties and systematic errors on the accuracy of reconstructed ISW signal. We find that systematics that affect the observed distribution of galaxies along the line of sight, such as photo-z and bias-evolution related errors, have a relatively minor impact on reconstruction quality. In contrast, however, we find that direction-dependent calibration errors can be very harmful. Specifically, we find that in order to avoid significant degradation of our reconstruction quality statistics, direction-dependent number density fluctuations due to systematics must be controlled so that their variance is smaller than $10^{-6}$ (which corresponds to a 0.1% calibration). Additionally, we explore the implications of our results for attempts to use reconstructed ISW maps to shed light on the origin of large-angle CMB alignments. We find that there is only a weak correlation between the true and reconstructed angular momentum dispersion, which quantifies alignment, even for reconstructed ISW maps which are fairly accurate overall.

We report a $5sigma$ detection of the pairwise kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect, combining galaxy clusters in DESI imaging surveys and the Planck temperature maps. The detection is facilitated by both improvements in the data and in the analysis method. For the data, we adopt the recently released galaxy group catalog (Y20: cite{yang2020extended}) with $sim 10^6$ robustly-identified groups, and construct various galaxy cluster samples for the kSZ measurement. The Y20 catalogue also provides estimation of halo mass, which further improves the kSZ measurement by $sim 10%$. For the analysis method, we derive an optimal estimator of pairwise kSZ through the maximum likelihood analysis. It also handles potential systematic errors self-consistently. The baseline cluster sample, containing the $1.2times 10^5$ richest galaxy clusters of typical mass ~$ 10^{14} M_{odot}/h$ at typical redshift $0.2$-$0.5$, rules out the null hypothesis at $5sigma$. When fitting with a pairwise kSZ template from simulations, the signal is detected at $4.7sigma$ and the average optical depth is constrained as $bar{tau}_e=(1.66pm 0.35)times 10^{-4}$. We perform various internal checks, with different cluster selection criteria, different sky coverage and redshift range, different CMB maps, different filter sizes, different treatments of potential systematics and the covariance matrix. The kSZ effect is consistently detected with $2.5leq $S/N$leq 5.6$ and acceptable $chi^2_{rm min}$, across a variety of cluster samples. The S/N is limited by both the Planck resolution and the photo-z accuracy, and therefore can be significant improved with DESI spectroscopic redshift information and with other CMB experiments.

We review recent results on the high-redshift universe and the cosmic evolution obtained using Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) as tracers of high-redshift galaxies. Most of the results come from photometric and spectroscopic observations of GRB host galaxies once the afterglow has faded away but also from the analysis of the GRB afterglow line of sight as revealed by absorptions in their optical spectrum.

We show that the most distant X-ray detected cluster known to date, ClJ1001 at z=2.506, hosts a strong overdensity of radio sources. Six of them are individually detected (within 10) in deep 0.75 resolution VLA 3GHz imaging, with S(3GHz)>8uJy. Of the six, AGN likely affects the radio emission in two galaxies while star formation is the dominant source powering the remaining four. We searched for cluster candidates over the full COSMOS 2-square degree field using radio-detected 3GHz sources and looking for peaks in Sigma5 density maps. ClJ1001 is the strongest overdensity by far with >10sigma, with a simple z_phot>1.5 preselection. A cruder photometric rejection of z<1 radio foregrounds leaves ClJ1001 as the second strongest overdensity, while even using all radio sources ClJ1001 remains among the four strongest projected overdensities. We conclude that there are great prospects for future, deep and wide-area radio surveys to discover large samples of the first generation of forming galaxy clusters. In these remarkable structures widespread star formation and AGN activity of massive galaxy cluster members, residing within the inner cluster core, will ultimately lead to radio continuum as one of the most effective means for their identification, with detection rates expected in the ballpark of 0.1-1 per square degree at z>2.5. Samples of hundreds such high-redshift clusters could potentially constrain cosmological parameters and test cluster and galaxy formation models.
