This paper presents an analytical characterization of the ergodic capacity of amplify-and-forward (AF) MIMO dual-hop relay channels, assuming that the channel state information is available at the destination terminal only. In contrast to prior results, our expressions apply for arbitrary numbers of antennas and arbitrary relay configurations. We derive an expression for the exact ergodic capacity, simplified closed-form expressions for the high SNR regime, and tight closed-form upper and lower bounds. These results are made possible to employing recent tools from finite-dimensional random matrix theory to derive new closed-form expressions for various statistical properties of the equivalent AF MIMO dual-hop relay channel, such as the distribution of an unordered eigenvalue and certain random determinant properties. Based on the analytical capacity expressions, we investigate the impact of the system and channel characteristics, such as the antenna configuration and the relay power gain. We also demonstrate a number of interesting relationships between the dual-hop AF MIMO relay channel and conventional point-to-point MIMO channels in various asymptotic regimes.

We analyze a secure two-hop mixed radio frequency (RF) and underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system using a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. The UWOC channel is modeled using a unified mixture exponential-generalized Gamma distribution to consider the combined effects of air bubbles and temperature gradients on transmission characteristics. Both legitimate and eavesdropping RF channels are modeled using flexible $alpha-mu$ distributions. Specifically, we first derive both the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the mixed RF and UWOC system. Based on the PDF and CDF expressions, we derive the closed-form expressions for the tight lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ), which are both expressed in terms bivariate Foxs $H$-function. To utilize these analytical expressions, we derive asymptotic expressions of SOP and PNZ using only elementary functions. Also, we use asymptotic expressions to determine the optimal transmitting power to maximize energy efficiency. Further, we thoroughly investigate the effect of levels of air bubbles and temperature gradients in the UWOC channel, and study nonlinear characteristics of the transmission medium and the number of multipath clusters of the RF channel on the secrecy performance. Finally, all analyses are validated using Monte Carlo simulation.
We analyze the secrecy performance of a two-hop mixed radio frequency (RF)/underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system using a decode-and-forward (DF) relay. All RF and UWOC links are modeled by the $alpha-mu$ and exponential-generalized Gamma distributions, respectively. We first derive the expressions of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) in exact closed-form, which are subsequently used to derive asymptotic expressions at high SNR that only includes simple functions for further insight. Moreover, based on the asymptotic expression, we can determine the optimal transmit power for a wide variety of RF and UWOC channel conditions. All analyses are validated using Monte Carlo simulation.
We consider a fading AWGN 2-user 2-hop network where the channel coefficients are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) drawn from a continuous distribution and vary over time. For a broad class of channel distributions, we characterize the ergodic sum capacity to within a constant number of bits/sec/Hz, independent of signal-to-noise ratio. The achievability follows from the analysis of an interference neutralization scheme where the relays are partitioned into $M$ pairs, and interference is neutralized separately by each pair of relays. When $M=1$, the proposed ergodic interference neutralization characterizes the ergodic sum capacity to within $4$ bits/sec/Hz for i.i.d. uniform phase fading and approximately $4.7$ bits/sec/Hz for i.i.d. Rayleigh fading. We further show that this gap can be tightened to $4log pi-4$ bits/sec/Hz (approximately $2.6$) for i.i.d. uniform phase fading and $4-4log( frac{3pi}{8})$ bits/sec/Hz (approximately $3.1$) for i.i.d. Rayleigh fading in the limit of large $M$.
In this paper the benefits provided by multi-cell processing of signals transmitted by mobile terminals which are received via dedicated relay terminals (RTs) are assessed. Unlike previous works, each RT is assumed here to be capable of full-duplex operation and receives the transmission of adjacent relay terminals. Focusing on intra-cell TDMA and non-fading channels, a simplified uplink cellular model introduced by Wyner is considered. This framework facilitates analytical derivation of the per-cell sum-rate of multi-cell and conventional single-cell receivers. In particular, the analysis is based on the observation that the signal received at the base stations can be interpreted as the outcome of a two-dimensional linear time invariant system. Numerical results are provided as well in order to provide further insight into the performance benefits of multi-cell processing with relaying.
In this paper, the performance of a dual-hop energy harvesting-based fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying communication system, subject to fading impairments, is investigated. We consider a source node ($S$) communicating with a destination node ($D$) through a fixed distant relay ($R$), which harvests energy from its received signals and uses it to amplify and forward the received signals to $D$. Power-splitting (PS) and time-switching (TS) schemes are considered in the analysis for energy harvesting. The $S$-$R$ and $R$-$D$ hops are modeled by the Nakagami-$m$ and $alpha $-$mu $ fading models, respectively. Closed-form expressions for the statistical properties of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are derived, based on which novel closed-form expressions for the average symbol error rate (ASER) as well as average channel capacity (ACC) considering four adaptive transmission policies are derived. The derived expressions are validated through Monte-Carlo simulations.
