In this paper, the performance of a dual-hop energy harvesting-based fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying communication system, subject to fading impairments, is investigated. We consider a source node ($S$) communicating with a destination node ($D$) through a fixed distant relay ($R$), which harvests energy from its received signals and uses it to amplify and forward the received signals to $D$. Power-splitting (PS) and time-switching (TS) schemes are considered in the analysis for energy harvesting. The $S$-$R$ and $R$-$D$ hops are modeled by the Nakagami-$m$ and $alpha $-$mu $ fading models, respectively. Closed-form expressions for the statistical properties of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are derived, based on which novel closed-form expressions for the average symbol error rate (ASER) as well as average channel capacity (ACC) considering four adaptive transmission policies are derived. The derived expressions are validated through Monte-Carlo simulations.

Energy harvesting multi-hop networks allow for perpetual operation of low cost, limited range wireless devices. Compared with their battery operated counterparts, the coupling of energy and data causality constraints with half duplex relay operation makes it challenging to operate such networks. In this paper, a throughput maximization problem for energy harvesting two-hop networks with decode-and-forward half-duplex relays is investigated. For a system with two parallel relays, various combinations of the following four transmission modes are considered: Broadcast from the source, multi-access from the relays, and successive relaying phases I and II. Optimal transmission policies for one and two parallel relays are studied under the assumption of non-causal knowledge of energy arrivals and finite size relay data buffers. The problem is formulated using a convex optimization framework, which allows for efficient numerical solutions and helps identify important properties of optimal policies. Numerical results are presented to provide throughput comparisons and to investigate the impact of multiple relays, size of relay data buffers, transmission modes, and energy harvesting on the throughput.
In this work, we present a unified framework for the performance analysis of dual-hop underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems with amplify-and-forward fixed gain relays in the presence of air bubbles and temperature gradients. Operating under either heterodyne detection or intensity modulation with direct detection, the UWOC is modeled by the unified mixture Exponential-Generalized Gamma distribution that we have proposed based on an experiment conducted in an indoor laboratory setup and has been shown to provide an excellent fit with the measured data under the considered lab channel scenarios. More specifically, we derive the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the probability density function of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in exact closed-form in terms of the bivariate Foxs H function. Based on this CDF expression, we present novel results for the fundamental performance metrics such as the outage probability, the average bit-error rate (BER) for various modulation schemes, and the ergodic capacity. Additionally, very tight asymptotic results for the outage probability and the average BER at high SNR are obtained in terms of simple functions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the dual-hop UWOC system can effectively mitigate the short range and both temperature gradients and air bubbles induced turbulences, as compared to the single UWOC link. All the results are verified via computer-based Monte-Carlo simulations.
This paper presents an analytical characterization of the ergodic capacity of amplify-and-forward (AF) MIMO dual-hop relay channels, assuming that the channel state information is available at the destination terminal only. In contrast to prior results, our expressions apply for arbitrary numbers of antennas and arbitrary relay configurations. We derive an expression for the exact ergodic capacity, simplified closed-form expressions for the high SNR regime, and tight closed-form upper and lower bounds. These results are made possible to employing recent tools from finite-dimensional random matrix theory to derive new closed-form expressions for various statistical properties of the equivalent AF MIMO dual-hop relay channel, such as the distribution of an unordered eigenvalue and certain random determinant properties. Based on the analytical capacity expressions, we investigate the impact of the system and channel characteristics, such as the antenna configuration and the relay power gain. We also demonstrate a number of interesting relationships between the dual-hop AF MIMO relay channel and conventional point-to-point MIMO channels in various asymptotic regimes.
This paper investigates the impact of the channel state information (CSI) and antenna correlation at the multi-antenna relay on the performance of wireless powered dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying systems. Depending on the available CSI at the relay, two different scenarios are considered, namely, instantaneous CSI and statistical CSI where the relay has access only to the antenna correlation matrix. Adopting the power-splitting architecture, we present a detailed performance study for both cases. Closed-form analytical expressions are derived for the outage probability and ergodic capacity. In addition, simple high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) outage approximations are obtained. Our results show that, antenna correlation itself does not affect the achievable diversity order, the availability of CSI at the relay determines the achievable diversity order. Full diversity order can be achieved with instantaneous CSI, while only a diversity order of one can be achieved with statistical CSI. In addition, the transmit antenna correlation and receive antenna correlation exhibit different impact on the ergodic capacity. Moreover, the impact of antenna correlation on the ergodic capacity also depends heavily on the available CSI and operating SNR.
Wireless energy harvesting is regarded as a promising energy supply alternative for energy-constrained wireless networks. In this paper, a new wireless energy harvesting protocol is proposed for an underlay cognitive relay network with multiple primary user (PU) transceivers. In this protocol, the secondary nodes can harvest energy from the primary network (PN) while sharing the licensed spectrum of the PN. In order to assess the impact of different system parameters on the proposed network, we first derive an exact expression for the outage probability for the secondary network (SN) subject to three important power constraints: 1) the maximum transmit power at the secondary source (SS) and at the secondary relay (SR), 2) the peak interference power permitted at each PU receiver, and 3) the interference power from each PU transmitter to the SR and to the secondary destination (SD). To obtain practical design insights into the impact of different parameters on successful data transmission of the SN, we derive throughput expressions for both the delay-sensitive and the delay-tolerant transmission modes. We also derive asymptotic closed-form expressions for the outage probability and the delay-sensitive throughput and an asymptotic analytical expression for the delay-tolerant throughput as the number of PU transceivers goes to infinity. The results show that the outage probability improves when PU transmitters are located near SS and sufficiently far from SR and SD. Our results also show that when the number of PU transmitters is large, the detrimental effect of interference from PU transmitters outweighs the benefits of energy harvested from the PU transmitters.
