The interplay between magnetism and metal-insulator transitions is fundamental to the rich physics of the single band fermion Hubbard model (FHM). Recent progress in experiments on trapped ultra-cold atoms have made possible the exploration of similar effects in the boson Hubbard model (BHM). This paper reports Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of the spin-1 BHM in the ground state. In the case of antiferromagnetic interactions, which favor singlet formation within the Mott insulator lobes, we present exact numerical evidence that the superfluid-insulator phase transition is first (second) order depending on whether the Mott lobe is even (odd). In the ferromagnetic case, the transitions are all continuous. We obtain the phase diagram in the case of attractive spin interactions and demonstrate the existence of the ferromagnetic superfluid. We also compare the QMC phase diagram with a third order perturbation calculation.

We investigate the superfluid--Mott-insulator quantum phase transition of spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice created by pairs of counterpropagating linearly polarized laser beams, driving an $F_g=1$ to $F_e=1$ internal atomic transition. The whole parameter space of the resulting two-component Bose-Hubbard model is studied. We find that the phase transition is not always second order as in the case of spinless bosons, but can be first order in certain regions of the parameter space. The calculations are done in the mean-field approximation by means of exact numerical diagonalization as well as within the framework of perturbaton theory.
We use Monte Carlo simulations to study the one-dimensional long-range diluted Heisenberg spin glass with interactions that fall as a power, sigma, of the distance. Varying the power is argued to be equivalent to varying the space dimension of a short-range model. We are therefore able to study both the mean-field and non-mean-field regimes. For one value of sigma, in the non-mean-field regime, we find evidence that the chiral glass transition temperature may be somewhat higher than the spin glass transition temperature. For the other values of sigma we see no evidence for this.
We investigate the dynamics of the one-dimensional strongly repulsive spin-1/2 Bose-Hubbard model for filling $ ule1.$ While at $ u=1$ the system is a Hubbard-Mott insulator exhibiting dynamical properties of the Heisenberg ferromagnet, at $ u<1$ it is a ferromagnetic liquid with complex spin dynamics. We find that close to the insulator-liquid transition the system admits for a complete separation of spin and density degrees of freedom valid at {it all} energy and momentum scales within the $t-J$ approximation. This allows us to derive the propagator of transverse spin waves and the shape of the magnon peak in the dynamic spin structure factor.
We study spontaneous dimerization transitions in a Heisenberg spin-1 chain with additional next-nearest neighbor (NNN) and 3-site interactions using extensive numerical simulations and a conformal field theory analysis. We show that the transition can be second order in the WZW SU(2)$_2$ or Ising universality class, or first-order. We argue that these features are generic because of a marginal operator in the WZW SU(2)$_2$ model, and because of two topologically distinct non-dimerized phases with or without edge states. We also provide explicit numerical evidence of conformal towers of singlets inside the spin gap at the Ising transition. Implications for other models are briefly discussed.
We use Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and exact diagonalization to explore the phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model with an additional superlattice potential. We first analyze the properties of superfluid and insulating phases present in the hard-core limit where an exact analytic treatment is possible via the Jordan-Wigner transformation. The extension to finite on-site interaction is achieved by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We determine insulator/superfluid phase diagrams as functions of the on-site repulsive interaction, superlattice potential strength, and filling, finding that insulators with fractional occupation numbers, which are present in the hard-core case, extend deep into the soft-core region. Furthermore, at integer fillings, we find that the competition between the on-site repulsion and the superlattice potential can produce a phase transition between a Mott insulator and a charge density wave insulator, with an intermediate superfluid phase. Our results are relevant to the behavior of ultracold atoms in optical superlattices which are beginning to be studied experimentally.
