Na-based osmium oxide pyrochlore was synthesized for the first time by an ion-exchange method. KOs2O6 was used as a host compound. Elelectron probe micro-analysis, synchrotron x-ray diffraction analysis, and thermo-gravimetric analysis confirmed its structure not as the beta-type but as the defect-type pyrochlore. The composition was identified as Na1.4Os2O6.H2O. Electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetization measurements of the polycrystalline Na1.4Os2O6.H2O clarified absence of superconductivity above 2 K, being in contrast to what were found for the beta-pyrochlore AOs2O6 (A = Cs, Rb, K). Sommerfeld coefficient of 22 mJ K-2 mol-1 of Na1.4Os2O6.H2O was smallest among those of AOs2O6. A magnetic anomaly at ~57 K and possible associated magnetoresistance (+3.7 % at 2 K in 70 kOe) were found.

We report the electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, and thermal conductivity of single-crystalline and sintered samples of the 5d pyrochlore oxide CsW2O6. The electrical resistivity of the single crystal is 3 mohm cm at 295 K and gradually increases with decreasing temperature above 215 K (Phase I). The thermoelectric power of the single-crystalline and sintered samples shows a constant value of approximately -60 uV K-1 in Phase I. These results reflect that the electron conduction by W 5d electrons in Phase I is incoherent and in the hopping regime, although a band gap does not open at the Fermi level. The thermal conductivity in Phase I of both samples is considerably low, which might be due to the rattling of Cs+ ions. In Phase II below 215 K, the electrical resistivity and the absolute value of thermoelectric power of both samples strongly increase with decreasing temperature, corresponding to a transition to a semiconducting state with a band gap open at the Fermi level, while the thermal conductivity in Phase II is smaller than that in Phase I.

The resistivity and thermopower of polycrystalline (Na,Ca)Co_2O_4 were measured and analyzed. Both the quantities increase with x, suggesting that the carrier density is decreased by the substitutions of Ca^{2+} for Na^{+}. Considering that the temperature dependence of the resistivity show a characteristic change with x, the conduction mechanism is unlikely to come from a simple electron-phonon scattering. As a reference for NaCo_2O_4, single crystals of a two-dimensional Co oxide (Bi,Pb)_2M_3Co_2O_9 (M=Sr and Ba) were studied. The Pb substitution decreases the resistivity, leaving the thermopower nearly intact.
We have synthesized and characterized the four different stable phases of Na ordered Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$, for $0.65<xlesssim 0.75$. Above 100K they display similar Curie-Weiss spin susceptibilities as well as ferromagnetic $q=0$ spin fluctuations in the CoO$_{2}$ planes revealed respectively by $^{23}$Na NMR shift and spin lattice $T_{1}$ data. The Co disproportionate already above 300K into Co$^{3+}$ and $approx $Co$^{3.5+}$ in all phases, which allows us to understand that magnetism is favoured. Below 100K the paramagnetic properties become quite distinct, and a 3D magnetic order sets in only for $x=0.75$, so that charge order has a subtle incidence on the low $T$ energy scales and transverse magnetic couplings.
We report measurements and analysis of magnetization, resistivity and thermopower of polycrystalline samples of the perovskite-type Co/Rh oxide La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$Co$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_{3-delta}$. This system constitutes a solid solution for a full range of $x$,in which the crystal structure changes from rhombohedral to orthorhombic symmetry with increasing Rh content $x$. The magnetization data reveal that the magnetic ground state immediately changes upon Rh substitution from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic with increasing $x$ near 0.25, which is close to the structural phase boundary. We find that one substituted Rh ion diminishes the saturation moment by 9 $mu_B$, which implies that one Rh$^{3+}$ ion makes a few magnetic Co$^{3+}$ ions nonmagnetic (the low spin state), and causes disorder in the spin state and the highest occupied orbital. In this disordered composition ($0.05le x le 0.75$), we find that the thermopower is anomalously enhanced below 50 K. In particular, the thermopower of $x$=0.5 is larger by a factor of 10 than those of $x$=0 and 1, and the temperature coefficient reaches 4 $mu$V/K$^2$ which is as large as that of heavy-fermion materials such as CeRu$_2$Si$_2$.

We have successfully grown cm3-size single crystals of the metallic-ferromagnet Sm2Mo2O7 by the floating-zone method using an infrared-red image furnace. The growth difficulties and the remedies found using a 2-mirror image furnace are discussed. Magnetization studies along the three crystalline axes of the compound are presented and discussed based on our recent proposal of an ordered spin-ice ground state for this compound
