Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to determine the microscopic Hamiltonian describing two high-spin variants of the high-anisotropy Mn$_6$ nanomagnet. The energy spectrum of both systems is characterized by the presence of several excited total-spin multiplets partially overlapping the S=12 ground multiplet. This implies that the relaxation processes of these molecules are different from those occurring in prototype giant-spin nanomagnets. In particular, we show that both the height of the energy barrier and resonant tunnelling processes are greatly influenced by low-lying excited total-spin multiplets.

Crystalline Mn5Ge3 nanomagnets are formed inside a Mn-diluted Ge matrix using Mn ion implantation. A temperature-dependent memory effect and slow magnetic relaxation are observed below the superparamagnetic blocking temperature of Mn5Ge3. Our findings corroborate that the observed spin-glass-like features are caused by the size distribution of Mn5Ge3 nanomagnets, rather than by the inter-particle interaction through the Mn-diluted Ge matrix.

A new scenario of the mechanism of intriguing ferromagnetic properties in Mn-doped magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As is examined in detail. We find that magnetic features seen in zero-field cooled and field cooled magnetizations are not interpreted with a single domain model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 217204 (2005)], and the magnetic relaxation, which is similar to that seen in magnetic particles and granular systems, is becoming significant at temperatures above the lower-temperature peak in the temperature dependence of ac susceptibility, supporting the cluster/matrix model reported in our previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 147203 (2005)]. Cole-Cole analysis reveals that magnetic interactions between such (Ga,Mn)As clusters are significant at temperatures below the higher-temperature peak in the temperature dependent ac susceptibility. The magnetizations of these films disappear above the temperature showing the higher-temperature peak, which is generally referred to as the Curie temperature. However, we suggest that these combined results are evidence that the temperature is actually the blocking temperature of (Ga,Mn)As clusters with a relatively high hole concentration compared to the (Ga,Mn)As matrix.
We report the results of an unpolarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study on Mn-Bi-based rare-earth-free permanent magnets. The magnetic SANS cross section is dominated by long-wavelength transversal magnetization fluctuations and has been analyzed in terms of the Guinier-Porod model and the distance distribution function. This provides the radius of gyration which, in the remanent state, ranges between about $220-240 , mathrm{nm}$ for the three different alloy compositions investigated. Moreover, computation of the distance distribution function in conjunction with results for the so-called $s$-parameter obtained from the Guinier-Porod model indicate that the magnetic scattering of a Mn$_{45}$Bi$_{55}$ sample has its origin in slightly shape-anisotropic structures.
X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to determine the valence state in La$_2$Co$_{1-x}$Mn$_{1+x}$O$_6$ ($xapprox 0.23$) thin films. We found that in spite of the non-stoichiometry, Co is in a divalent state while Mn ions show a mixed valence state. The relation of this finding with the magnetic properties of the films is discussed. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements prove that magnetic anisotropy originates from Co spin-orbit coupling and it is strain-dependent: a strong increase of the angular contribution to the magnetic moment is found when in-plane (out-of-plane) and cell parameters get expanded (compressed). This behavior is reproduced by first order perturbation theory calculations.
Neutron scattering and ultrasonic methods have been used to study the lattice dynamics of two single crystals of Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys close to Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{34}$In$_{16}$ magnetic superelastic composition. The paper reports the experimental determination of the low-lying phonon dispersion curves and the elastic constants for this alloy system. We found that the frequencies of the TA$_{2}$ branch are relatively low and it exhibits a small dip anomaly at a wave number $xi_{0} approx 1/3$, which softens with decreasing temperature. Associated with the softening of this phonon, we also observed the softening of the shear elastic constant $C=(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$. Both temperature softenings are typical for bcc based solids which undergo martensitic transformations and reflect the dynamical instability of the cubic lattice against shearing of ${110}$ planes along $<1bar{1}0>$ directions. Additionally, we measured low-lying phonon dispersion branches and elastic constants in applied magnetic fields aimed to characterize the magnetoelastic coupling.
