We have performed real and momentum space spin-dependent spectroscopy of spontaneously formed exciton polariton condensates for a non-resonant pumping scheme. Under linearly polarized pump, our results can be understood in terms of spin-dependent Boltzmann equations in a two-state model. This suggests that relaxation into the ground state occurs after multiple phonon scattering events and only one polariton-polariton scattering. For the circular pumping case, in which only excitons of one spin are injected, a bottleneck effect is observed, implying inefficient relaxation.

Terahertz emission between exciton-polariton branches in semiconductor microcavities is expected to be strongly stimulated in the polariton laser regime, due to the high density of particles in the lower state (final state stimulation effect). However, non-radiative scattering processes depopulate the upper state and greatly hinder the efficiency of such terahertz sources. In this work, we suggest a new scheme using multiple microcavities and exploiting the transition between two interband polariton branches located below the exciton level. We compare the non-radiative processes loss rates in single and double cavity devices and we show that a dramatic reduction can be achieved in the latter, enhancing the efficiency of the terahertz emission.

We present a time-resolved study of energy relaxation and trapping dynamics of polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity ridge. The combination of two non-resonant, pulsed laser sources in a GaAs ridge-shaped microcavity gives rise to profuse quantum phenomena where the repulsive potentials created by the lasers allow the modulation and control of the polariton flow. We analyze in detail the dependence of the dynamics on the power of both lasers and determine the optimum conditions for realizing an all-optical polariton condensate transistor switch. The experimental results are interpreted in the light of simulations based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, including incoherent pumping, decay and energy relaxation within the condensate.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, known for exhibiting strong excitonic resonances, constitute a very interesting and versatile platform for investigation of light-matter interactions. In this work we report on a strong coupling regime between excitons in monolayer WSe2 and photons confined in an open, voltage-tunable dielectric microcavity. The tunability of our system allows us to extend the exciton-polariton state over a wide energy range and, in particular, to bring the excitonic component of the lower polariton mode into resonance with other excitonic transitions in monolayer WSe2. With selective excitation of spin-polarized exciton-polaritons we demonstrate the valley polarization when the polaritons from the lower branch come into resonance with a bright trion state in monolayer WSe2 and valley depolarization when they are in resonance with a dark trion state.
Interactions of few-cycle terahertz pulses with the induced optical polarization in a quantum-well microcavity reveal that the lower and higher exciton-polariton modes together with the optically forbidden 2p-exciton state form a unique {Lambda}-type three-level system. Pronounced nonlinearities are observed via time-resolved strong-terahertz and weak-optical excitation spectroscopy and explained with a fully microscopic theory. The results show that the terahertz pulses strongly couple the exciton-polariton states to the 2p-exciton state while no resonant transition between the two polariton levels is observed.
We demonstrate theoretically the spontaneous formation of a stochastic polarization in exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensates in planar microcavities under pulsed excitation. Below the threshold pumping intensity (dependent on the polariton life-time) the average polarization degree is close to zero, whilst above threshold the condensate acquires a polarization described by a (pseudospin) vector with random orientation, in general. We establish the link between second order coherence of the polariton condensate and the distribution function of its polarization. We examine also the mechanisms of polarization dephasing and relaxation.
