Single crystals of RbOs2O6 have been grown from Rb2O and Os in sealed quartz ampoules. The crystal structure has been identified at room temperature as cubic with the lattice constant a = 10.1242(12) A. The anisotropy of the tetrahedral and octahedral networks is lower and the displacement parameters of alkali metal atoms are smaller than for KOs2O6, so the rattling of the alkali atoms in RbOs2O6 is less pronounced. Superconducting properties of RbOs2O6 in the mixed state have been well described within the London approach and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa(0) = 31 has been derived from the reversible magnetization. This parameter is field dependent and changes at low temperatures from kappa = 22 (low fields) to kappa = 31 at H_{c2}. The thermodynamic critical field H_{c}(0) = 1.3 kOe and the superconducting gap 2delta/k_{B}T_{c} = 3.2 have been estimated. These results together with slightly different H_{c2}(T) dependence obtained for crystals and polycrystalline RbOs2O6 proof evidently that this compound is a weak-coupling BCS-type superconductor close to the dirty limit.
F-substituted NdOBiS2 superconducting single crystals were grown using CsCl/KCl flux. This is the first example of the single-crystal growth of a BiS2-based superconductor. The obtained single crystals had a plate-like shape with a size of 1-2 mm and a well-developed ab-plane. The crystal structure of the grown crystals was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis to be the tetragonal space group P4/nmm (#129) with a = 3.996(3) A and c = 13.464(6) A. The chemical formula of the grown crystals was approximately Nd0.98(0.06)O0.7(0.1)F0.3(0.1)Bi0.98(0.04)S2, and Cs, K, and Cl were not detected in the grown crystals by electron probe microanalysis. The grown crystals had a critical temperature of approximately 5 K. The superconducting anisotropy of the single crystals was estimated to be about 30 from the effective mass model and the upper critical field.
We report anisotropic dc magnetic susceptibility $chi(T)$, electrical resistivity $rho(T)$, and heat capacity $C(T)$ measurements on the single crystals of CaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ for $x$ = 0 and 0.06. Large sized single crystals were grown by the high temperature solution method with Sn as the solvent. For the pure compound with $x$ = 0, a high temperature transition at 170 K is observed which is attributed to a combined spin density wave (SDW) ordering and a structural phase transition. On the other hand, for the Co-doped samples for $x$ = 0.06, the SDW transition is suppressed while superconductivity is observed at $simeq$17 K. The superconducting transition has been confirmed from the magnetization and electrical resistivity studies. The $^{57}$Fe Mossbauer spectrum in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ indicates that the SDW ordering is incommensurate. In the Co-doped sample, a prominent paramagnetic line at 4.2 K is observed indicating a weakening of the SDW state.
The superconducting gap Delta has been measured in Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d single crystals in a wide range of temperatures 4.2 K < T < Tc by point-contact and tunnelling spectroscopy for current in c-direction. The value of Delta(4.2 K) was found to scale with the critical temperature Tc in the whole range of doping levels with the ratio 2D/kTc = 12.5 +/- 2. The closing of the gap Ds at T = Tc has been registered in the underdoped, optimally doped as well as in the overdoped sam-ples.
Single crystals of the LnFeAsO (Ln1111, Ln = Pr, Nd, and Sm) family with lateral dimensions up to 1 mm were grown from NaAs and KAs flux at high pressure. The crystals are of good structural quality and become superconducting when O is partially substituted by F (PrFeAsO1-xFx and NdFeAsO1-xFx) or when Fe is substituted by Co (SmFe1-xCoxAsO). From magnetization measurements, we estimate the temperature dependence and anisotropy of the upper critical field and the critical current density of underdoped PrFeAsO0.7F0.3 crystal with Tc = 25 K. Single crystals of SmFe1-xCoxAsO with maximal Tc up to 16.3 K for x = 0.08 were grown for the first time. From transport and magnetic measurements we estimate the critical fields and their anisotropy, and find these superconducting properties to be quite comparable to the ones in SmFeAsO1-xFx with a much higher Tc of = 50 K. The magnetically measured critical current densities are as high as 109 A/m2 at 2 K up to 7 T, with indication of the usual fishtail effect. The upper critical field estimated from resistivity measurements is anisotropic with slopes of -8.7 T/K (H // ab-plane) and -1.7 T/K (H // c-axis). This anisotropy (= 5) is similar to that in other Ln1111 crystals with various higher Tc s.
We report on the synthesis of superconducting single crystals of FeSe, and their characterization by X-ray diffraction, magnetization and resistivity. We have performed ac susceptibility measurements under high pressure in a hydrostatic liquid argon medium up to 14 GPa and we find that TC increases up to 33-36 K in all samples, but with slightly different pressure dependences on different samples. Above 12 GPa no traces of superconductivity are found in any sample. We have also performed a room temperature high pressure X-ray diffraction study up to 12 GPa on a powder sample, and we find that between 8.5 GPa and 12 GPa, the tetragonal PbO structure undergoes a structural transition to a hexagonal structure. This transition results in a volume decrease of about 16%, and is accompanied by the appearance of an intermediate, probably orthorhombic phase.
