Using the star formation rates from the SDSS galaxy sample, extracted using the MOPED algorithm, and the empirical Kennicutt law relating star formation rate to gas density, we calculate the time evolution of the gas fraction as a function of the present stellar mass. We show how the gas-to-stars ratio varies with stellar mass, finding good agreement with previous results for smaller samples at the present epoch. For the first time we show clear evidence for progressive gas loss with cosmic epoch, especially in low-mass systems. We find that galaxies with small stellar masses have lost almost all of their cold baryons over time, whereas the most massive galaxies have lost little. Our results also show that the most massive galaxies have evolved faster and turned most of their gas into stars at an early time, thus strongly supporting a downsizing scenario for galaxy evolution.

Within the standard model of hierarchical galaxy formation in a {Lambda}CDM Universe, the environment of galaxies is expected to play a key role in driving galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper we investigate whether and how the gas metallicity and the star formation surface density ({Sigma}_SFR) depend on galaxy environment. To this end we analyse a sample of 1162 local, star-forming galaxies from the galaxy survey Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA). Generally, both parameters do not show any significant dependence on environment. However, in agreement with previous studies, we find that low-mass satellite galaxies are an exception to this rule. The gas metallicity in these objects increases while their {Sigma}SFR decreases slightly with environmental density. The present analysis of MaNGA data allows us to extend this to spatially resolved properties. Our study reveals that the gas metallicity gradients of low-mass satellites flatten and their {Sigma}SFR gradients steepen with increasing environmental density. By extensively exploring a chemical evolution model, we identify two scenarios that are able to explain this pattern: metal-enriched gas accretion or pristine gas inflow with varying accretion timescales. The latter scenario better matches the observed {Sigma}SFR gradients, and is therefore our preferred solution. In this model, a shorter gas accretion timescale at larger radii is required. This suggests that outside-in quenching governs the star formation processes of low-mass satellite galaxies in dense environments.

Generally the gas metallicity in distant galaxies can only be inferred by using a few prominent emission lines. Various theoretical models have been used to predict the relationship between emission line fluxes and metallicity, suggesting that some line ratios can be used as diagnostics of the gas metallicity in galaxies. However, accurate empirical calibrations of these emission line flux ratios from real galaxy spectra spanning a wide metallicity range are still lacking. In this paper we provide such empirical calibrations by using the combination of two sets of spectroscopic data: one consisting of low-metallicity galaxies with a measurement of [OIII]4363, and the other one consisting of galaxies in the SDSS DR4 whose metallicity has been determined from various strong emission lines in their spectra. This combined data set constitutes the largest sample of galaxies with information on the gas metallicity available so far and spanning the widest metallicity range. Our empirical diagrams show that the line ratio [OIII]/[OII] is a useful tool to break the degeneracy in the R_23 parameter when no information on the [NII] line is available. The line ratio [NeIII]/[OII] also results to be a useful metallicity indicator for high-z galaxies. Finally, we compare these empirical relations with photoionization models. We find that the empirical R_23-metallicity sequence is strongly discrepant with respect to the trend expected by models with constant ionization parameter, which is interpreted as a consequence of a strong metallicity dependence of the average ionization parameter in galaxies. This result should warn about the use of theoretical models with constant ionization parameter to infer metallicities from observed line ratios. (abbreviated)

We use the combined photometric SDSS + GALEX database to look for populations of luminous blue star-forming galaxies. These were initially identified from such a sample at redshifts near 0.4, using SDSS spectra. We make use of the colour index previously defined to separate stars and QSOs, to locate more of these unusual galaxies, to fainter limits. They are found in significant numbers in two different regions of the related colour-magnitude plot. Within these regions, we use the ensemble 7-colour photometry to estimate the populations of blue star-forming galaxies at redshift near 0.4, and at redshift near 1, from a full photometric sample of over half a million, composed mostly of normal galaxies and QSOs.
Rings in S0s are enigmatic features which can however betray the evolutionary paths of particular galaxies. We have undertaken long-slit spectroscopy of five lenticular galaxies with UV-bright outer rings. The observations have been made with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) to reveal the kinematics, chemistry, and the ages of the stellar populations and the gas characteristics in the rings and surrounding disks. Four of the five rings are also bright in the H-alpha emission line, and the spectra of the gaseous rings extracted around the maxima of the H-alpha equivalent width reveal excitation by young stars betraying current star formation in the rings. The integrated level of this star formation is 0.1-0.2 solar mass per year, with the outstanding value of 1 solar mass per year in NGC 7808. The difference of chemical composition between the ionized gas of the rings which demonstrate nearly solar metallicity and the underlying stellar disks which are metal-poor implies recent accretion of the gas and star formation ignition; the star formation history estimated by using different star formation indicators implies that the star formation rate decreases with e-folding time of less than 1 Gyr. In NGC 809 where the UV-ring is well visible but the H-alpha emission line excited by massive stars is absent, the star formation has already ceased.
We present analytic theory for the total column density of singly ionized carbon (C+) in the optically thick photon dominated regions (PDRs) of far-UV irradiated (star-forming) molecular clouds. We derive a simple formula for the C+ column as a function of the cloud (hydrogen) density, the far-UV field intensity, and metallicity, encompassing the wide range of galaxy conditions. When assuming the typical relation between UV and density in the cold neutral medium, the C+ column becomes a function of the metallicity alone. We verify our analysis with detailed numerical PDR models. For optically thick gas, most of the C+ column is mixed with hydrogen that is primarily molecular (H2), and this C+/H2 gas layer accounts for almost all of the `CO-dark molecular gas in PDRs. The C+/H2 column density is limited by dust shielding and is inversely proportional to the metallicity down to ~0.1 solar. At lower metallicities, H2 line blocking dominates and the C+/H2 column saturates. Applying our theory to CO surveys in low redshift spirals we estimate the fraction of C+/H2 gas out of the total molecular gas to be typically ~0.4. At redshifts 1<z<3 in massive disc galaxies the C+/H2 gas represents a very small fraction of the total molecular gas (<0.16). This small fraction at high redshifts is due to the high gas surface densities when compared to local galaxies.
