The existence of a non-thermodynamic arrow of time was demonstrated in a recent paper (Mod.Phys.Lett. A13, 1265 (1998)), in which a model of non-local Quantum Electrodynamics was formulated through the principle of gauge invariance. In this paper we show that the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation is capable of making every particle of the universe (except those which are not acted upon by an electromagnetic field) follow this arrow of time.

Statistical physics cannot explain why a thermodynamic arrow of time exists, unless one postulates very special and unnatural initial conditions. Yet, we argue that statistical physics can explain why the thermodynamic arrow of time is universal, i.e., why the arrow points in the same direction everywhere. Namely, if two subsystems have opposite arrow-directions at a particular time, the interaction between them makes the configuration statistically unstable and causes a decay towards a system with a universal direction of the arrow of time. We present general qualitative arguments for that claim and support them by a detailed analysis of a toy model based on the bakers map.
A strong variable gravitational field of the very early Universe inevitably generates relic gravitational waves by amplifying their zero-point quantum oscillations. We begin our discussion by contrasting the concepts of relic gravitational waves and inflationary `tensor modes. We explain and summarize the properties of relic gravitational waves that are needed to derive their effects on CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies. The radiation field is characterized by four invariants I, V, E, B. We reduce the radiative transfer equations to a single integral equation of Voltairre type and solve it analytically and numerically. We formulate the correlation functions C^{XX}_{ell} for X, X= T, E, B and derive their amplitudes, shapes and oscillatory features. Although all of our main conclusions are supported by exact numerical calculations, we obtain them, in effect, analytically by developing and using accurate approximations. We show that the TE correlation at lower ells must be negative (i.e. an anticorrelation), if it is caused by gravitational waves, and positive if it is caused by density perturbations. This difference in TE correlation may be a signature more valuable observationally than the lack or presence of the BB correlation, since the TE signal is about 100 times stronger than the expected BB signal. We discuss the detection by WMAP of the TE anticorrelation at ell approx 30 and show that such an anticorrelation is possible only in the presence of a significant amount of relic gravitational waves (within the framework of all other common assumptions). We propose models containing considerable amounts of relic gravitational waves that are consistent with the measured TT, TE and EE correlations.
We investigate the statistical arrow of time for a quantum system being monitored by a sequence of measurements. For a continuous qubit measurement example, we demonstrate that time-reversed evolution is always physically possible, provided that the measurement record is also negated. Despite this restoration of dynamical reversibility, a statistical arrow of time emerges, and may be quantified by the log-likelihood difference between forward and backward propagation hypotheses. We then show that such reversibility is a universal feature of non-projective measurements, with forward or backward Janus measurement sequences that are time-reversed inverses of each other.
Radio interferometers are well suited to studies of both total intensity and polarized intensity fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background radiation, and they have been used successfully in measurements of both the primary and secondary anisotropy. Recent observations with the Cosmic Background Imager operating in the Chilean Andes, the Degree Angular Scale Interferometer operating at the South Pole, and the Very Small Array operating in Tenerife have probed the primary anisotropy over a wide range of angular scales. The advantages of interferometers for microwave background observations of both total intensity and polarized radiation are discussed, and the cosmological results from these three instruments are presented. The results show that, subject to a reasonable value for the Hubble constant, which is degenerate with the geometry in closed models, the geometry of the Universe is flat to high precision (~5%) and the primordial fluctuation spectrum is very close to the scale-invariant Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum. Both of these findings are concordant with inflationary predictions. The results also show that the baryonic matter content is consistent with that found from primordial nucleosynthesis, while the cold dark matter component can account for no more than ~40% of the energy density of the Universe. It is a requirement of these observations, therefore, that ~60% of the energy content of the Universe is not related to matter, either baryonic or nonbaryonic. This dark energy component of the energy density is attributed to a nonzero cosmological constant.
This is a summary of presentations delivered at the OC1 parallel session Primordial Gravitational Waves and the CMB of the 12th Marcel Grossmann meeting in Paris, July 2009. The reports and discussions demonstrated significant progress that was achieved in theory and observations. It appears that the existing data provide some indications of the presence of gravitational wave contribution to the CMB anisotropies, while ongoing and planned observational efforts are likely to convert these indications into more confident statements about the actual detection.
