The effects of electron clouds on positively-charged beams have been an active area of research in recent years at particle accelerators around the world. Transverse beam-size blow-up due to electron clouds has been observed in some machines, and is considered to be a major limiting factor in the development of higher-current, higher-luminosity electron-positron colliders. The leading proposed mechanism for beam blow-up is the excitation of a fast head-tail instability due to short-range wakes within the electron cloud. We present here observations of betatron oscillation sidebands in bunch-by-bunch spectra that may provide direct evidence of such head-tail motion in a positron beam.

Plasma-based accelerators (PBAs), having demonstrated the production of GeV electron beams in only centimetre scales, offer a path towards a new generation of highly compact and cost-effective particle accelerators. However, achieving the required beam quality, particularly on the energy spread for applications such as free-electron lasers, remains a challenge. Here we investigate fundamental sources of energy spread and bunch length in PBAs which arise from the betatron motion of beam electrons. We present an analytical theory, validated against particle-in-cell simulations, which accurately describes these phenomena. Significant impact on the beam quality is predicted for certain configurations, explaining previously observed limitations on the achievable bunch length and energy spread. Guidelines for mitigating these contributions towards high-quality beams are deduced.
In this work we have observed x-ray emission from x-ray waveguide radiator excited by relativistic electrons. The experiment carried out at Tomsk betatron B-35. Such new type stratified target was mounted on goniometer head inside the betatron toroid. The target is consisted of the W-C-W layers placed on Si substrate. The photographs of the angular distributions of the radiation generated in the target by 20-33 MeV electrons have shown the waveguide effect of the three-layer structure on x-rays generated in the target. The effect proved in an angular distribution of radiation as an additional narrow peak of guided x-rays intensity inside a wide cone of usual Bremsstrahlung.
KEKB is a high luminosity e+e- collider for studying B mesons and has achieved the design luminosity of 1034cm-2s-1 in 2003. In order to get higher luminosity, we tested negative momentum compaction optics in the summer of 2003. We measured the bunch length using three methods at 0.7mA to 1.17mA bunch current and confirmed the length was shortened with the negative momentum compaction optics.

In this communication we present a generalization of the map formalism, introduced in [1] and [2], to the analysis of electron flux at the chamber wall with particular reference to the exploration of LHC conditioning scenarios.

The fast beam-ion instability (FII) is caused by the interaction of an electron bunch train with the residual gas ions. The ion oscillations in the potential well of the electron beam have an inherent frequency spread due to the nonlinear profile of the potential. However, this frequency spread and associated with it Landau damping typically is not strong enough to suppress the instability. In this work, we develop a model of FII which takes into account the frequency spread in the electron beam due to the beam-beam interaction in an electron-ion collider. We show that with a large enough beam-beam parameter the fast ion instability can be suppressed. We estimate the strength of this effect for the parameters of the eRHIC electron-ion collider.
