A global protocol for the thermostatistical analysis of hot nuclear sources is discussed. By using freeze-out properties of multifragmenting hot nuclei produced in quasifusion central $^{129}$Xe+$^{nat}$Sn collisions at different beam energies (32, 39, 45 and 50 AMeV) which were estimated by means of a simulation based on experimental data collected by the $4pi$ INDRA multidetector, heat capacity in the thermal excitation energy range 4 - 12.5 AMeV was calculated from total kinetic energies and multiplicities at freeze-out. The microcanonical formulation was employed. Negative heat capacity which signs a first order phase transition for finite systems is observed and confirms previous results using a different method.
An experimental indication of negative heat capacity in excited nuclear systems is inferred from the event by event study of energy fluctuations in $Au$ quasi-projectile sources formed in $Au+Au$ collisions at 35 A.MeV. The excited source configuration is reconstructed through a calorimetric analysis of its de-excitation products. Fragment partitions show signs of a critical behavior at about 5 A.MeV excitation energy. In the same energy range the heat capacity shows a negative branch providing a direct evidence of a first order liquid gas phase transition.
A key question regarding the unconventional superconductivity of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ remains whether the order parameter is single- or two-component. Under a hypothesis of two-component superconductivity, uniaxial pressure is expected to lift their degeneracy, resulting in a split transition. The most direct and fundamental probe of a split transition is heat capacity. Here, we report development of new high-frequency methodology for measurement of heat capacity of samples subject to large and highly homogeneous uniaxial pressure. We place an upper limit on the heat capacity signature of any second transition of a few per cent of the primary superconducting transition. The normalized jump in heat capacity, $Delta C/C$, grows smoothly as a function of uniaxial pressure, but we find no qualitative evidence of a pressure-induced order parameter transition. Thanks to the high precision of our measurements, these findings place stringent constraints on theories of the superconductivity of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.
