Burgers equation is one of the simplest nonlinear partial differential equations-it combines the basic processes of diffusion and nonlinear steepening. In some applications it is appropriate for the diffusion coefficient to be a time-dependent function. Using a Waynes transformation and centre manifold theory, we derive l-mode and 2-mode centre manifold models of the generalised Burgers equations for bounded smooth time dependent coefficients. These modellings give some interesting extensions to existing results such as the similarity solutions using the similarity method.

The conditions for a generalized Burgers equation which a priori involves nine arbitrary functions of one, or two variables to allow an infinite dimensional symmetry algebra are determined. Though this algebra can involve up to two arbitrary functions of time, it does not allow a Virasoro algebra. This result confirms that variable coefficient generalizations of a non-integrable equation should be expected to remain as such.
In the present manuscript we consider the Boltzmann equation that models a polyatomic gas by introducing one additional continuous variable, referred to as microscopic internal energy. We establish existence and uniqueness theory in the space homogeneous setting for the full non-linear case, under an extended Grad assumption on transition probability rate, that comprises hard potentials for both the relative speed and internal energy with the rate in the interval $(0,2]$, which is multiplied by an integrable angular part and integrable partition functions. The Cauchy problem is resolved by means of an abstract ODE theory in Banach spaces, for an initial data with finite and strictly positive gas mass and energy, finite momentum, and additionally finite $k_*$ polynomial moment, with $k_*$ depending on the rate of the transition probability and the structure of a polyatomic molecule or its internal degrees of freedom. Moreover, we prove that polynomially and exponentially weighted Banach space norms associated to the solution are both generated and propagated uniformly in time.

Theoretical background of continuous contractions of finite-dimensional Lie algebras is rigorously formulated and developed. In particular, known necessary criteria of contractions are collected and new criteria are proposed. A number of requisite invariant and semi-invariant quantities are calculated for wide classes of Lie algebras including all low-dimensional Lie algebras. An algorithm that allows one to handle one-parametric contractions is presented and applied to low-dimensional Lie algebras. As a result, all one-parametric continuous contractions for the both complex and real Lie algebras of dimensions not greater than four are constructed with intensive usage of necessary criteria of contractions and with studying correspondence between real and complex cases. Levels and co-levels of low-dimensional Lie algebras are discussed in detail. Properties of multi-parametric and repeated contractions are also investigated.
