Two and three loop alpha corrections are calculated for Kasner and Schwarzschild metrics, and their T-duals, in the bosonic string theory. These metrics are used to obtain the two and three loop alpha corrections to T-duality. It is noted in particular that the inclusion of alpha corrections and the requirement of consistency with the alpha-corrected T-duality for the Kasner and Schwarzschild metrics enables one to fix uniquely the covariant form of the T-duality rules at three loops. As a generalization of the T-dual of the Schwarzschild geometry a class of massless geometries is presented.

We examine the structure of higher-derivative string corrections under a cosmological reduction and make connection to generalized geometry and T-duality. We observe that, while the curvature $R^mu{}_{ urhosigma}(Omega_+)$ of the generalized connection with torsion, $Omega_+=Omega+frac{1}{2}H$, is an important component in forming T-duality invariants, it is necessarily incomplete by itself. We revisit the tree-level $alphaR^2$ corrections to the bosonic and heterotic string in the language of generalized geometry and explicitly demonstrate that additional $H$-field couplings are needed to restore T-duality invariance. We also comment on the structure of the T-duality completion of tree-level $alpha^3R^4$ in the type II string.

Demanding $O(d,d)$-duality covariance, Hohm and Zwiebach have written down the action for the most general cosmology involving the metric, $b$-field and dilaton, to all orders in $alpha$ in the string frame. Remarkably, for an FRW metric-dilaton ansatz the equations of motion turn out to be quite simple, except for the presence of an unknown function of a single variable. If this unknown function satisfies some simple properties, it allows de Sitter solutions in the string frame. In this note, we write down the Einstein frame analogues of these equations, and make some observations that make the system tractable. Perhaps surprisingly, we find that a necessary condition for de Sitter solutions to exist is that the unknown function must satisfy a certain second order non-linear ODE. The solutions of the ODE do not have a simple power series expansion compatible with the leading supergravity expectation. We discuss possible interpretations of this fact. After emphasizing that all (potential) string and Einstein frame de Sitter solutions have a running dilaton, we write down the most general cosmologies with a constant dilaton in string/Einstein frame: these have power law scale factors.
In this paper we compute the the one-loop chiral logarithmic corrections to the S and T parameters in a highly deconstructed Higgsless model with only three sites. In addition to the electroweak gauge bosons, this model contains a single extra triplet of vector states (which we denote rho^{pm} and rho^0), rather than an infinite tower of KK modes. We compute the corrections to S and T in tHooft-Feynman gauge, including the ghost, unphysical Goldstone-boson, and appropriate pinch contributions required to obtain gauge-invariant results for the one-loop self-energy functions. We demonstrate that the chiral-logarithmic corrections naturally separate into two parts, a model-independent part arising from scaling below the rho mass, which has the same form as the large Higgs-mass dependence of the S or T parameter in the standard model, and a second model-dependent contribution arising from scaling between the rho mass and the cutoff of the model. The form of the universal part of the one-loop result allows us to correctly interpret the phenomenologically derived limits on the S and T parameters (which depend on a reference Higgs-boson mass) in this three-site Higgsless model. Higgsless models may be viewed as dual to models of dynamical symmetry breaking akin to walking technicolor, and in these terms our calculation is the first to compute the subleading 1/N corrections to the S and T parameters. We also discuss the reduction of the model to the ``two-site model, which is the usual electroweak chiral lagrangian, noting the ``non-decoupling contributions present in the limit as M_rho goes to infinity.
Using effective field theory techniques, we compute quantum corrections to spherically symmetric solutions of Einsteins gravity and focus in particular on the Schwarzschild black hole. Quantum modifications are covariantly encoded in a non-local effective action. We work to quadratic order in curvatures simultaneously taking local and non-local corrections into account. Looking for solutions perturbatively close to that of classical general relativity, we find that an eternal Schwarzschild black hole remains a solution and receives no quantum corrections up to this order in the curvature expansion. In contrast, the field of a massive star receives corrections which are fully determined by the effective field theory.
We study string quantum corrections to the ratio of latitude and circular Wilson loops in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. Conformal gauge for the corresponding minimal surface in AdS(5)xS(5) is singular and we show that an IR anomaly associated with the divergence in the conformal factor removes previously reported discrepancy with the exact field-theory result. We also carefully check conformal anomaly cancellation and recalculate fluctuation determinants by directly evaluating phaseshifts for all the fluctuation modes.
