We consider the motion of an active Brownian particle with speed fluctuations in d-dimensions in the presence of both translational and orientational diffusion. We use an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process for active speed generation. Using a Laplace transform approach, we describe and use a Fokker-Planck equation-based method to evaluate the exact time dependence of all relevant dynamical moments. We present explicit calculations of such moments and compare our analytical predictions against numerical simulations to demonstrate and analyze several dynamical crossovers. The kurtosis of displacement shows positive or negative deviations from a Gaussian behavior at intermediate times depending on the dominance of speed or orientational fluctuations.
We compute the crossover exponents of all quadratic and cubic deformations of critical field theories with permutation symmetry $S_q$ in $d=6-epsilon$ (Landau-Potts field theories) and $d=4-epsilon$ (hypertetrahedral models) up to three loops. We use our results to determine the $epsilon$-expansion of the fractal dimension of critical clusters in the most interesting cases, which include spanning trees and forests ($qto0$), and bond percolations ($qto1$). We also explicitly verify several expected degeneracies in the spectrum of relevant operators for natural values of $q$ upon analytic continuation, which are linked to logarithmic corrections of CFT correlators, and use the $epsilon$-expansion to determine the universal coefficients of such logarithms.
Exact analytic solutions of static, stable, non-planar BPS domain wall junctions are obtained in extended Abelian-Higgs models in $(D+1)$-dimensional spacetime. For specific choice of mass parameters, the Lagrangian is invariant under the symmetric group ${cal S}_{D+1}$ of degree $D+1$ spontaneously broken down to ${cal S}_D$ in vacua, admitting ${cal S}_{D+1}/{cal S}_D$ domain wall junctions. In $D=2$, there are three vacua and three domain walls meeting at a junction point, in which the conventional topological charges $Y$ and $Z$ exist for the BPS domain wall junctions and the BPS domain walls, respectively as known before. In $D=3$, there are four vacua, six domain walls, four junction lines on which three domain walls meet, and one junction point on which all the six domain walls meet. We define a new topological charge $X$ for the junction point in addition to the conventional topological charges $Y$ and $Z$. In general dimensions, we find that the configuration expressed in the $D$-dimensional real space is dual to a regular $D$-simplex in the $D$-dimensional internal space and that a $d$-dimensional subsimplex of the regular $D$-simplex corresponds to a $(D-d)$-dimensional intersection. Topological charges are generalized to the level-$d$ wall charge $W_d$ for the $d$-dimensional subsimplexes.
The structure and energetics of superflow around quantized vortices, and the motion inherited by these vortices from this superflow, are explored in the general setting of the superfluidity of helium-four in arbitrary dimensions. The vortices may be idealized as objects of co-dimension two, such as one-dimensional loops and two-dimensional closed surfaces, respectively, in the cases of three- and four-dimensional superfluidity. By using the analogy between vorticial superflow and Ampere-Maxwell magnetostatics, the equilibrium superflow containing any specified collection of vortices is constructed. The energy of the superflow is found to take on a simple form for vortices that are smooth and asymptotically large, compared with the vortex core size. The motion of vortices is analyzed in general, as well as for the special cases of hyper-spherical and weakly distorted hyper-planar vortices. In all dimensions, vortex motion reflects vortex geometry. In dimension four and higher, this includes not only extrinsic but also intrinsic aspects of the vortex shape, which enter via the first and second fundamental forms of classical geometry. For hyper-spherical vortices, which generalize the vortex rings of three dimensional superfluidity, the energy-momentum relation is determined. Simple scaling arguments recover the essential features of these results, up to numerical and logarithmic factors.
The probabilistic approach to turbulence is applied to investigate density fluctuations in supersonic turbulence. We derive kinetic equations for the probability distribution function (PDF) of the logarithm of the density field, $s$, in compressible turbulence in two forms: a first-order partial differential equation involving the average divergence conditioned on the flow density, $langle abla cdot {bs u} | srangle$, and a Fokker-Planck equation with the drift and diffusion coefficients equal to $-langle {bs u} cdot abla s | srangle$ and $langle {bs u} cdot abla s | srangle$, respectively. Assuming statistical homogeneity only, the detailed balance at steady state leads to two exact results, $langle abla cdot {bs u} | s rangle =0$, and $langle {bs u} cdot abla s | srangle=0$. The former indicates a balance of the flow divergence over all expanding and contracting regions at each given density. The exact results provide an objective criterion to judge the accuracy of numerical codes with respect to the density statistics in supersonic turbulence. We also present a method to estimate the effective numerical diffusion as a function of the flow density and discuss its effects on the shape of the density PDF.
