A first-principles study of the birefringence and the frequency dependent second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients of the ternary pnictide semiconductors with formula ABC$_2$ (A = Zn, Cd; B = Si, Ge; C = As, P) with the chalcopyrite structures was carried out. We show that a simple empirical observation that a smaller value of the gap is correlated with larger value of SHG is qualitatively true. However, simple inverse power scaling laws between gaps and SHG were not found. Instead, the real value of the nonlinear response is a result of a very delicate balance between different intraband and interband terms.

Recently, atomically thin PdSe$_2$ semiconductors with rare pentagonal Se-Pd-Se monolayers were synthesized and were also found to possess superior properties such as ultrahigh air stability, and high carrier mobility, thus offering a new family of two-dimensional (2D) materials for exploration of 2D semiconductor physics and for applications in advanced opto-electronic and nonlinear photonic devices. In this work, we systematically study the nonlinear optical (NLO) responses [namely, bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE), second-harmonic generation (SHG) and linear electric-optic (LEO) effect] of noncentrosymmetric bilayer (BL) and four-layer (FL) PdS$_2$ and PdSe$_2$ by applying the first-principles density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation plus scissors-correction. First of all, the shift current conductivity is in the order of 130 $mu$A/V$^2$, being very high compared to known BPVE materials. Similarly, their injection current susceptibilities are in the order of 100$times$10$^8$A/V$^2$s, again being large. Secondly, the SHG coefficients ($chi^{(2)}$) of these materials are also large, being one order higher than that of the best-known few-layer group 6B transition metal dichalcogenides. For example, the maximum magnitude of $chi^{(2)}$ can reach 1.4$times$10$^3$ pm/V for BL PdSe$_2$ at 1.9 eV and 1.2$times$10$^3$ pm/V at 3.1 eV for BL PdS$_2$. Thirdly we find significant LEO coefficients for these structures in the low photon energy. All these indicate that 2D PdX$_2$ semiconductors will find promising NLO applications. Fourthly, we find that the large BPVE and SHG of the few-layer PdX$_2$ structures are due to strong intralayer directional covalent bonding and also 2D quantum confinement.
Strong second-harmonic generation has recently been experimentally observed from metamaterials consisting of periodic arrays of metal split ring resonators with an effective negative magnetic permeability [Science, 313, 502 (2006)]. To explore the underlying physical mechanism, a classical model derived from microscopic theory is employed here. The quasi-free electrons inside the metal are approximated as a classical Coulomb-interacting electron gas, and their motion under the excitation of an external electromagnetic field is described by the cold-plasma wave equations. Through numerical simulations, it is demonstrated that the microscopic theory includes the dominant physical mechanisms bothqualitatively and quantitatively.
Nonreciprocal devices that allow the light propagation in only one direction are indispensable in photonic circuits and emerging quantum technologies. Contemporary optical isolators and circulators, however, require large size or strong magnetic fields because of the general weakness of magnetic light-matter interactions, which hinders their integration into photonic circuits. Aiming at stronger magneto-optical couplings, a promising approach is to utilize nonlinear optical processes. Here, we demonstrate nonreciprocal magnetoelectric second harmonic generation (SHG) in CuB2O4. SHG transmission changes by almost 100% in a magnetic-field reversal of just 10 mT. The observed nonreciprocity results from an interference between the magnetic-dipole- and electric-dipole-type SHG. Even though the former is usually notoriously smaller than the latter, it is found that a resonantly enhanced magnetic-dipole-transition has a comparable amplitude as non-resonant electric-dipole-transition, leading to the near-perfect nonreciprocity. This mechanism could form one of the fundamental bases of nonreciprocity in multiferroics, which is transferable to a plethora of magnetoelectric systems to realize future nonreciprocal and nonlinear-optical devices.

A systematic {it ab initio} study of the second-order nonlinear optical properties of BN nanotubes within density functional theory in the local density approximation has been performed. Highly accurate full-potential projector augmented-wave method was used. Specifically, the second-harmonic generation ($chi_{abc}^{(2)}$) and linear electro-optical ($r_{abc}$) coefficients of a large number of the single-walled zigzag, armchair and chiral BN nanotubes (BN-NT) as well as the double-walled zigzag (12,0)@(20,0) BN nanotube and the single-walled zigzag (12,0) BN-NT bundle have been calculated. Importantly, unlike carbon nanotubes, both the zigzag and chiral BN-NTs are found to exhibit large second-order nonlinear optical behavior with the $chi_{abc}^{(2)}$ and $r_{abc}$ coefficients being up to thirty times larger than that of bulk BN in both zinc-blende and wurtzite structures, indicating that BN-NTs are promising materials for nonlinear optical and opto-electric applications. Though the interwall interaction in the double-walled BN-NTs is found to reduce the second-order nonlinear optical coefficients significantly, the interwall interaction in the single-walled BN-NT bundle has essentially no effect on the nonlinear optical properties. The prominant features in the spectra of $chi_{abc}^{(2)}(-2omega,omega,omega)$ of the BN-NTs are suscessfully correlated with the features in the linear optical dielectric function $epsilon (omega)$ in terms of single-photon and two-photon resonances.
The notion of spontaneous symmetry breaking has been used to describe phase transitions in a variety of physical systems. In crystalline solids, the breaking of certain symmetries, such as mirror symmetry, is difficult to detect unambiguously. Using 1$T$-TaS$_2$, we demonstrate here that rotational-anisotropy second harmonic generation (RA-SHG) is not only a sensitive technique for the detection of broken mirror symmetry, but also that it can differentiate between mirror symmetry-broken structures of opposite planar chirality. We also show that our analysis is applicable to a wide class of different materials with mirror symmetry-breaking transitions. Lastly, we find evidence for bulk mirror symmetry-breaking in the incommensurate charge density wave phase of 1$T$-TaS$_2$. Our results pave the way for RA-SHG to probe candidate materials where broken mirror symmetry may play a pivotal role.
