The infrared reflectivity of a $rm La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$ single crystal is studied over a broad range of temperatures (78-340 K), magnetic fields (0-16 T), and wavenumbers (20-9000 cm$^{-1}$). The optical conductivity gradually changes from a Drude-like behavior to a broad peak feature near 5000 cm$^{-1}$ in the ferromagnetic state below the Curie temperature $T_C=307 K$. Various features of the optical conductivity bear striking resemblance to recent theoretical predictions based on the interplay between the double exchange interaction and the Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling. A large optical magnetoconductivity is observed near $T_C$.

We have studied acoustoelectric (AE) effect produced by surface acoustic waves (SAW) in a monolithic layered structure, composed of piezodielectric LiNbO_{3} substrate and La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_{3} film. The experiments unexpectedly revealed in the longitudinal AE effect an anomalous contribution, invariant upon reversal of SAW propagation, which coexists with the ordinary (odd in wave vector) effect. The anomalous effect dominates near the metal-insulator transition, while the ordinary effect prevails at high and low temperatures. We show that the anomalous effect is caused by strong modulation of the film conductivity produced by the SAW elastic deformations.
We measured the Raman spectra of ferromagnetic nearly half metal CoS2 in a broad temperature range. All five Raman active modes Ag, Eg, Tg(1), Tg(2) and Tg(3) were observed. The magnetic ordering is indicated by a change of the temperature dependences of the frequency and the line width of Ag and T g(2) modes at the Curie point. The temperature dependence of the frequencies and linewidths of the Ag, Eg, Tg(1), T g(2) modes in the paramagnetic phase can be described in the framework of the Klemens approach. Hardening of the Tg(2), Tg(1) and A g modes on cooling can be unambiguously seen in the ferromagnetic phase. The linewidths of Tg(2) and Ag modes behave a natural way at low exciting laser power (decrease with decreasing temperature) in the ferromagnetic phase. At high exciting laser power the corresponding linewidths increase at temperature decreasing below the Curie temperature. Then as can be seen the line width of Ag mode reaches a maxima at about 80K. This intriging feature probably signifies a specific channel of the optical phonon decay in the ferromagnetic phase of CoS2. Tentative explanations of some of the observed effects are given, taking into account the nearly half metallic nature of CoS2.
$La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ samples were prepared in nano- and polycrystalline forms by sol-gel and solid state reaction methods, respectively, and structurally characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties determined by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements are discussed. The magnetocaloric effect in this nanocrystalline manganite is spread over a broader temperature interval than in the polycrystalline case. The relative cooling power of the poly- and nanocrystalline manganites is used to evaluate a possible application for magnetic cooling below room temperature.
The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline La0.70(Ca0.30-xSrx)MnO3:Ag 10% manganite have been investigated. All the compositions are crystallized in single phase orthorhombic Pbnm space group. Both, the Insulator-Metal transition temperature (TIM) and Curie temperature (Tc) are observed at 298 K for x = 0.10 composition. Though both TIM and Tc are nearly unchanged with Ag addition, the MR is slightly improved. The MR at 300 K is found to be as large as 31% with magnetic field change of 1Tesla, whereas it reaches up to 49% at magnetic field of 3Tesla for La0.70Ca0.20Sr0.10MnO3:Ag0.10 sample. The maximum entropy change (DeltaSMmax) is 7.6 J.Kg-1.K-1 upon the magnetic field change of 5Tesla, near its Tc (300.5 K). The La0.70Ca0.20Sr0.10MnO3:Ag0.10 sample having good MR (31%1Tesla, 49%3Tesla) and reasonable change in magnetic entropy (7.6 J.Kg-1.K-1, 5 Tesla) at 300 K can be a potential magnetic refrigerant material at ambient temperatures.
Using neutron reflectometry and resonant x-ray techniques we studied the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) in superlattices composed of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and ferromagnetic-metallic (FM-M) La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) or ferromagnetic-insulating (FM-I) LaMnO$_{3+delta}$ (LMO). We find that the MPE strongly depends on the electronic state of the manganite layers, being pronounced for the FM-M LCMO and almost absent for FM-I LMO. We also detail the change of the magnetic depth profile due to the MPE and provide evidence for its intrinsic nature.
