Neutron scattering from copper benzoate, Cu(C6D5COO)2 3D2O, provides the first direct experimental evidence for field-dependent incommensurate low energy modes in a one-dimensional spin S = 1/2 antiferromagnet. Soft modes occur for wavevectors q=pi +- dq(H) where dq(H) ~ 2 pi M(H)/gmu_B as predicted by Bethe ansatz and spinon descriptions of the S = 1/2 chain. Unexpected was a field-induced energy gap $Delta(H) propto H^alpha$, where $alpha = 0.65(3)$ as determined from specific heat measurements. At H = 7 T (gmu_B H/J = 0.52), the magnitude of the gap varies from 0.06 - 0.3 J depending on the orientation of the applied field.

The magnetic properties of alkali-metal peroxychromate K$_2$NaCrO$_8$ are governed by the $S = 1/2$ pentavalent chromium cation, Cr$^{5+}$. Specific heat, magnetocalorimetry, ac magnetic susceptibility, torque magnetometry, and inelastic neutron scattering data have been acquired over a wide range of temperature, down to 60 mK, and magnetic field, up to 18 T. The magnetic interactions are quasi-two-dimensional prior to long-range ordering, where $T_N = 1.66$ K in $H = 0$. In the $T to 0$ limit, the magnetic field tuned antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition suggests a critical field $H_c = 7.270$ T and a critical exponent $alpha = 0.481 pm 0.004$. The neutron data indicate the magnetic interactions may extend over intra-planar nearest-neighbors and inter-planar next-nearest-neighbor spins.

Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements in magnetic fields were performed on an $S=1/2$ one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuGaF$_6$. Exchange interaction was evaluated as $J/k_{rm B}simeq 100$ K. However, no magnetic ordering was observed down to 0.46 K. It was found that an applied magnetic field induces a staggered magnetic susceptibility obeying the Curie law and an excitation gap, both of which should be attributed to the antisymmetric interaction of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya type and/or the staggered $g$-tensor. With increasing magnetic field $H$, the gap increases almost in proportion to $H^{2/3}$.
From experimental and theoretical analyses of magnetic and specific-heat properties, we present the complete magnetic phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu(N$_2$H$_5$)$_2$(SO$_4$)$_2$. On cooling and at zero magnetic field this compound enters a one-dimensional regime with short-range magnetic correlations, marked by a broad maximum in the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility at $T_mathrm{max}sim 2,mathrm{K}$, followed by an ordered antiferromagnetic phase below $T_mathrm{N}sim 1,mathrm{K}$ induced by small interchain couplings. The intermediate-temperate one-dimensional regime can be modeled using exact quantum-transfer-matrix calculations, which perfectly describe the nonmonotonic behavior of T_max as a function of the magnetic field, giving $J = 4.25,mathrm{K}$ for the intrachain exchange parameter. The analysis of magnetic specific-heat and susceptibility data at low temperature indicates that the interchain exchange couplings are an order of magnitude smaller than the coupling inside the chains.

Magnetic excitations of the quasi-1D S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) Cs2CuCl4 have been measured as a function of magnetic field using neutron scattering. For T<0.62 K and B=0 T the weak inter-chain coupling produces 3D incommensurate ordering. Fields greater than Bc =1.66 T, but less than the field (~8 T) required to fully align the spins, are observed to decouple the chains, and the system enters a disordered intermediate-field phase (IFP). The IFP excitations are in agreement with the predictions of Muller et al. for the 1D S=1/2 HAF, and Talstra and Haldane for the related 1/r^2 chain (the Haldane-Shastry model). This behaviour is inconsistent with linear spin-wave theory.
We investigate magnetic, thermal, and dielectric properties of SrCuTe2O6, which is isostructural to PbCuTe2O6, a recently found, Cu-based 3D frustrated magnet with a corner sharing triangular spin network having dominant first and second nearest neighbor (nn) couplings [B. Koteswararao, et al. Phys. Rev. B 90, 035141 (2014)]. Although SrCuTe2O6 has a structurally similar spin network, but the magnetic data exhibit the characteristic features of a typical quasi -one-dimensional magnet, which mainly resulted from the magnetically dominant third nn coupling, uniform chains. The magnetic properties of this system are studied via magnetization (M), heat capacity (Cp), dielectric constant, measurements along with ab-initio band structure calculations. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data show a broad maximum at 32 K and the system orders at low temperatures TN1=5.5 K and TN2=4.5 K, respectively. The analysis of chi(T) data gives an intra-chain coupling, J3/kB, to be about - 42 K with non-negligible frustrated inter-chain couplings (J1/kB and J2/kB). The hopping parameters obtained from LDA band structure calculations also suggest the presence of coupled uniform chains. The observation of simultaneous anomalies in dielectric constant at TN1 and TN2 suggests the presence of magneto-dielectric effect in SrCuTe2O6. A magnetic phase diagram is also built based on M, C p, and dielectric constant results.
