Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements in magnetic fields were performed on an $S=1/2$ one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuGaF$_6$. Exchange interaction was evaluated as $J/k_{rm B}simeq 100$ K. However, no magnetic ordering was observed down to 0.46 K. It was found that an applied magnetic field induces a staggered magnetic susceptibility obeying the Curie law and an excitation gap, both of which should be attributed to the antisymmetric interaction of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya type and/or the staggered $g$-tensor. With increasing magnetic field $H$, the gap increases almost in proportion to $H^{2/3}$.

We investigated magnetic and thermodynamic properties of $S$ = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuMoO$_4$(OH) through single crystalline magnetization and heat capacity measurements. At zero field, it behaves as a uniform $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with $J$ = 238 K, and exhibits a canted antiferromagnetism below $T_mathrm{N}$ = 1.52 K. In addition, a magnetic field $H$ induces the anisotropy in magnetization and opens a gap in the spin excitation spectrum. These properties are understood in terms of an effective staggered field induced by staggered g-tensors and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. Temperature-dependencies of the heat capacity and their field variations are consistent with those expected for quantum sine-Gordon model, indicating that spin excitations consist of soliton, anti-soliton and breather modes. From field-dependencies of the soliton mass, the staggered field normalized by the uniform field $c_mathrm{s}$ is estimated as 0.041, 0.174, and 0.030, for $H parallel a$, $b$, and $c$, respectively. Such a large variation of $c_mathrm{s}$ is understood as the combination of staggered g-tensors and DM interactions which induce the staggered field in the opposite direction for $H parallel a$ and $c$ but almost the same direction for $H parallel b$ at each Cu site.
Magnetization measurements on single-crystal cubic SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ with an applied magnetic field of along three inequivalent high symmetry directions $[100]$, $[110]$, and $[111]$ reveal weak magnetic anisotropy. The fits of the magnetic susceptibility to the result from a quantum Monte Carlo simulation on the Heisenberg spin-chain model, where the chain is formed via the dominant third-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction $J_3$, yield the intra-chain interaction $(J_3/k_B)$ between 50.12(7) K for the applied field along $[110]$ and 52.5(2) K along $[100]$ with about the same $g$-factor of 2.2. Single-crystal neutron diffraction unveils the transition to the magnetic ordered state as evidenced by the onset of the magnetic Bragg intensity at $T_textrm{N1}=5.25(9)$ K with no anomaly of the second transition at $T_textrm{N2}$ reported previously. Based on irreducible representation theory and magnetic space group analysis of powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction data, the magnetic structure in the Shubnikov space group $P4_132$, where the Cu$^{2+}$~$S=1/2$ spins antiferromagnetically align in the direction perpendicular to the spin chain, is proposed. The measured ordered moment of $0.52(6)~mu_B$, which represents 48% reduction from the expected value of $1~mu_B$, suggests the remaining influence of frustration resulting from the $J_1$ and $J_2$ bonds.
BaCo2V2O8 is a nice example of a quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin system that can be described in terms of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics. This is explored in the present study where the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram is thoroughly established up to 12 T using single-crystal neutron diffraction. The transition from the Neel phase to the incommensurate longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW) phase through a first-order transition, as well as the critical exponents associated with the paramagnetic to ordered phase transitions, and the magnetic order both in the Neel and in the LSDW phase are determined, thus providing a stringent test for the theory.
We report a detailed magnetotransport study of the highly anisotropic quasi-one-dimensional oxide Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ whose in-chain electrical resistivity diverges below a temperature $T_{rm min} sim$ 25 K. For $T < T_{rm min}$, a magnetic field applied parallel to the conducting chain induces a large negative magnetoresistance and ultimately, the recovery of a metallic state. We show evidence that this insulator/metal crossover is a consequence of field-induced suppression of a density-wave gap in a highly one-dimensional conductor. At the highest fields studied, there is evidence for the possible emergence of a novel superconducting state with an onset temperature $T_c >$ 10 K.

Neutron scattering from copper benzoate, Cu(C6D5COO)2 3D2O, provides the first direct experimental evidence for field-dependent incommensurate low energy modes in a one-dimensional spin S = 1/2 antiferromagnet. Soft modes occur for wavevectors q=pi +- dq(H) where dq(H) ~ 2 pi M(H)/gmu_B as predicted by Bethe ansatz and spinon descriptions of the S = 1/2 chain. Unexpected was a field-induced energy gap $Delta(H) propto H^alpha$, where $alpha = 0.65(3)$ as determined from specific heat measurements. At H = 7 T (gmu_B H/J = 0.52), the magnitude of the gap varies from 0.06 - 0.3 J depending on the orientation of the applied field.
