The effects of interchain coupling on solitons and soliton lattice structures in CuGeO3 are explored. It is shown that interchain coupling substantially increases the soliton width and changes the soliton lattice structures in the incommensurate phase. It is proposed that the experimentally observed large soliton width in CuGeO3 is mainly due to interchain coupling effects.

Spin resonance absorption of the triplet excitations is studied experimentally in the Haldane magnet PbNi2V2O8. The spectrum has features of spin S=1 resonance in a crystal field, with all three components, corresponding to transitions between spin sublevels, being observable. The resonance field is temperature dependent, indicating the renormalization of excitation spectrum in interaction between the triplets. Magnetic resonance frequencies and critical fields of the magnetization curve are consistent with a boson version of the macroscopic field theory [Affleck 1992, Farutin & Marchenko 2007], implying the field induced ordering at the critical field, while contradict the previously used approach of noninteracting spin chains.
Some of the properties of the low-dimensional electronically correlated materials cgo and vo are discussed. The emphasis lies on recent results obtained using Raman scattering and optical absorption spectroscopy as a function of temperature, magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure.
An efficient and precise thermodynamic method to extract the interchain coupling (IC) of spatially anisotropic 2D or 3D spin-1/2 systems from their empirical saturation field H_s (T=0) is proposed. Using density-matrix renormalization group, hard-core boson, and spin-wave theory we study how H_s is affected by an antiferromagnetic (AFM) IC between frustrated chains described in the J_1-J_2-spin model with ferromagnetic 1st and AFM 2nd neighbor in-chain exchange. A complex 3D-phase diagram has been found. For Li2CuO2 and Y2Ca2Cu5O10, we show that H_s is solely determined by the IC and predict H_s approx 61 T for the latter.Using H_s approx 55 T from our high-field pulsed measurements one reads out a weak IC for Li2CuO2 close to that from neutron scattering.
Temperature and magnetic field dependent polarized Brillouin spectra of CuGeO_3 are reported. In addition to a bound singlet state at 30 cm^{-1}, a new feature has been observed at 18 cm^{-1}. This feature is interpreted in terms of a novel three-magnon light scattering process between excited triplet states.

We study spin-orbit coupling in metallic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within the many-body Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) framework. For a well defined sub-class of metallic CNTs, that contains both achiral zig-zag as well as a sub-set of chiral tubes, an effective low energy field theory description is derived. We aim to describe system at finite dopings, but close to the charge neutrality point (commensurability). A new regime is identified where spin-orbit coupling leads to an inverted hierarchy of mini-gaps of bosonic modes. We then add a proximity coupling to a superconducting (SC) substrate and show that the only order parameter that is supported within the novel, spin-orbit induced phase is a topologically trivial s-SC.
