Here we present a study of stochastic resonance in an extended FitzHugh-Nagumo system with a field dependent activator diffusion. We show that the system response (here measured through the output signal-to-noise ratio) is enhanced due to the particular form of the non-homogeneous coupling. Such a result supports previous ones obtained in a simpler scalar reaction-diffusion system and shows that such an enhancement, induced by the field dependent diffusion -or selective coupling-, is a robust phenomenon.

The existence of a random attractor for the stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo system defined on an unbounded domain is established. The pullback asymptotic compactness of the stochastic system is proved by uniform estimates on solutions for large space and time variables. These estimates are obtained by a cut-off technique.

We analyze the dynamics of the FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) model in the presence of colored noise and a periodic signal. Two cases are considered: (i) the dynamics of the membrane potential is affected by the noise, (ii) the slow dynamics of the recovery variable is subject to noise. We investigate the role of the colored noise on the neuron dynamics by the mean response time (MRT) of the neuron. We find meaningful modifications of the resonant activation (RA) and noise enhanced stability (NES) phenomena due to the correlation time of the noise. For strongly correlated noise we observe suppression of NES effect and persistence of RA phenomenon, with an efficiency enhancement of the neuronal response. Finally we show that the self-correlation of the colored noise causes a reduction of the effective noise intensity, which appears as a rescaling of the fluctuations affecting the FHN system.
We investigate the stability of traveling-pulse solutions to the stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo equations with additive noise. Special attention is given to the effect of small noise on the classical deterministically stable traveling pulse. Our method is based on adapting the velocity of the traveling wave by solving a stochastic ordinary differential equation (SODE) and tracking perturbations to the wave meeting a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) coupled to an ordinary differential equation (ODE). This approach has been employed by Kruger and Stannat for scalar stochastic bistable reaction-diffusion equations such as the Nagumo equation. A main difference in our situation of an SPDE coupled to an ODE is that the linearization around the traveling wave is not self-adjoint anymore, so that fluctuations around the wave cannot be expected to be orthogonal in a corresponding inner product. We demonstrate that this problem can be overcome by making use of Riesz instead of orthogonal spectral projections. We expect that our approach can also be applied to traveling waves and other patterns in more general situations such as systems of SPDEs that are not self-adjoint. This provides a major generalization as these systems are prevalent in many applications.
Collective electron transport causes a weakly coupled semiconductor superlattice under dc voltage bias to be an excitable system with $2N+2$ degrees of freedom: electron densities and fields at $N$ superlattice periods plus the total current and the field at the injector. External noise of sufficient amplitude induces regular current self-oscillations (coherence resonance) in states that are stationary in the absence of noise. Numerical simulations show that these oscillations are due to the repeated nucleation and motion of charge dipole waves that form at the emitter when the current falls below a critical value. At the critical current, the well-to-well tunneling current intersects the contact load line. We have determined the device-dependent critical current for the coherence resonance from experiments and numerical simulations. We have also described through numerical simulations how a coherence resonance triggers a stochastic resonance when its oscillation mode becomes locked to a weak ac external voltage signal. Our results agree with the experimental observations.
We investigate a ring of $N$ FitzHugh--Nagumo elements coupled in emph{phase-repulsive} fashion and submitted to a (subthreshold) common oscillatory signal and independent Gaussian white noises. This system can be regarded as a reduced version of the one studied in [Phys. Rev. E textbf{64}, 041912 (2001)], although externally forced and submitted to noise. The noise-sustained synchronization of the system with the external signal is characterized.
