We report on first principles calculations of the electronic structure of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ junction with two possible types of interface terminations. We find that the La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$O/TiO$_{2}$ interface preserves the interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the interface MnO$_{2}$ layer and the bulk. The other interface, MnO$_{2}$/SrO, favours antiferromagnetic coupling with the bulk. By inserting two unit cells of undoped LaMnO$_{3}$ at the interface the ferromagnetism is recovered. This is understood in terms of the doping level and the mobility of carriers near the interface.
Magnetocaloric properties of an inhomogeneous magnetic system of a 7.6 nm La${}_{0.7}$Sr${}_{0.3}$MnO${}_{3}$ consisting of superparamagnetic (SPM) with blocking temperature ( $T_B$ = 240 K) and ferromagnetic (FM) phases ( $T_C$ = 290 K) is studied by dc magnetization measurements. Isothermal magnetization versus applied magnetic field is carried out from 100 K to 320 K in magnetic fields up to 4 kOe to determine changes in the magnetic entropy ($-Delta S_M$) and the relative cooling power (RCP). Due to the co-existence of SPM and FM phases, there are two peaks in the temperature dependence of$-Delta S_M$ in different applied magnetic fields from 1.3 kOe to 4 kOe. The peaks are at 220 K and 270 K which are close $T_B$ and $T_C$ of the film. The highest RCP occurs at 270 K (which is in $T_B$ $mathrm{<}$ $T$ $mathrm{<}$ $T_C$) in H = 4 kOe with the value of 0.19 (J/kg K). The $-Delta S_M$ vs T data are fit to the exponent power law, $-Delta S_M=a H^n$ where it shows good fits for the whole measured temperature range. This analysis reveals a deviation of n from $n$ = 2/3 which is likely due to the presence of SPM spin clusters in the dead layer for $T$ $mathrm{<}$ $T_C$. Results show that the thin film of La${}_{0.7}$Sr${}_{0.3}$MnO${}_{3}$ can be a good candidate for magnetic refrigeration devices with multiple RCP peaks in low and high temperatures.
The viscous Gilbert damping parameter governing magnetization dynamics is of primary importance for various spintronics applications. Although, the damping constant is believed to be anisotropic by theories. It is commonly treated as a scalar due to lack of experimental evidence. Here, we present an elaborate angle dependent broadband ferromagnetic resonance study of high quality epitaxial La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ films. Extrinsic effects are suppressed and we show convincing evidence of anisotropic damping with twofold symmetry at room temperature. The observed anisotropic relaxation is attributed to the magnetization orientation dependence of the band structure. In addition, we demonstrated that such anisotropy can be tailored by manipulating the stain. This work provides new insights to understand the mechanism of magnetization relaxation.
The magnetic dead layers in films a few nanometers thick are investigated for La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ on (001)-oriented SrTiO$_3$ (STO), LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$(Sr$_2$TaAlO$_6$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT) substrates. An anomalous moment found to persist above the Curie temperature of the La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ films is not attributed to the films, but to oxygen vacancies at or near the surface of the substrate. The contribution to the moment from the substrate is as high as 20 $mu$B/nm$^2$ in the case of STO or LSAT. The effect is increased by adding an STO cap layer. Taking this d-zero magnetism into account, extrapolated magnetic dead layer thicknesses of 0.8 nm, 1.5 nm and 3.0 nm are found for the manganite films grown on LSAT, STO and LAO substrates, respectively. An STO cap layer eliminates the LSMO dead layer.
The transport and magnetic properties of correlated La{0.53}Sr{0.47}MnO{3} ultrathin films, grown epitaxially on SrTiO{3}, show a sharp cusp at the structural transition temperature of the substrate. Using a combination of experiment and theory we show that the cusp is a result of resonant coupling between the charge carriers in the film and a soft phonon mode in the SrTiO{3}, mediated through oxygen octahedra in the film. The amplitude of the mode diverges towards the transition temperature, and phonons are launched into the first few atomic layers of the film affecting its electronic state.
An emerging area in condensed matter physics is the use of multilayered heterostructures to enhance ferroelectricity in complex oxides. Here, we demonstrate that optically pumping carriers across the interface between thin films of a ferroelectric (FE) insulator and a ferromagnetic metal can significantly enhance the FE polarization. The photoinduced FE state remains stable at low temperatures for over one day. This occurs through screening of the internal electric field by the photoexcited carriers, leading to a larger, more stable polarization state that may be suitable for applications in areas such as data and energy storage.
