By LDA+U method with spin-orbit coupling (LDA+U+SO) the magnetic state and electronic structure have been investigated for plutonium in delta and alpha phases and for Pu compounds: PuN, PuCoGa5, PuRh2, PuSi2, PuTe, and PuSb. For metallic plutonium in both phases in agreement with experiment a nonmagnetic ground state was found with Pu ions in f^6 configuration with zero values of spin, orbital, and total moments. This result is determined by a strong spin-orbit coupling in 5f shell that gives in LDA calculation a pronounced splitting of 5f states on f^{5/2} and f^{7/2} subbands. A Fermi level is in a pseudogap between them, so that f^{5/2} subshell is already nearly completely filled with six electrons before Coulomb correlation effects were taken into account. The competition between spin-orbit coupling and exchange (Hund) interaction (favoring magnetic ground state) in 5f shell is so delicately balanced, that a small increase (less than 15%) of exchange interaction parameter value from J_H=0.48eV obtained in constrain LDA calculation would result in a magnetic ground state with nonzero spin and orbital moment values. For Pu compounds investigated in the present work, predominantly f^6 configuration with nonzero magnetic moments was found in PuCoGa5, PuSi2, and PuTe, while PuN, PuRh2, and PuSb have f^5 configuration with sizeable magnetic moment values. Whereas pure jj coupling scheme was found to be valid for metallic plutonium, intermediate coupling scheme is needed to describe 5f shell in Pu compounds. The results of our calculations show that both spin-orbit coupling and exchange interaction terms in the Hamiltonian must be treated in a general matrix form for Pu and its compounds.

Ab-initio relativistic dynamical mean-field theory is applied to resolve the long-standing controversy between theory and experiment in the simple face-centered cubic phase of plutonium called delta-Pu. In agreement with experiment, neither static nor dynamical magnetic moments are predicted. In addition, the quasiparticle density of states reproduces not only the peak close to the Fermi level, which explains the large coefficient of electronic specific heat, but also main 5f features observed in photoelectron spectroscopy.
Correlation effects are important for making predictions in the delta phase of Pu. Using a realistic treatment of the intra-atomic Coulomb correlations we address the long-standing problem of computing ground state properties. The equilibrium volume is obtained in good agreement with experiment when taking into account Hubbard U of the order 4 eV. For this U, the calculation predicts a 5f5 atomic-like configuration with L=5, S=5/2, and J=5/2 and shows a nearly complete compensation between spin and orbital magnetic moments.

We calculate Raman response functions on the Fermi surface in metallic cuprates.
The metal-insulator transition and unconventional metallic transport in vanadium dioxide (VO$_2$) are investigated with a combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and reflectance measurements. The data indicates that electronic correlations, not electron-phonon interactions, govern charge dynamics in the metallic state of VO$_2$. This study focuses on the frequency and temperature dependence of the conductivity in the regime of extremely short mean free path violating the Ioffe-Regel-Mott limit of metallic transport. The standard quasiparticle picture of charge conduction is found to be untenable in metallic VO$_2$.
We report magnetic behavior of two intermetallics-based kagome lattices, Tb3Ru4Al12 and Er3Ru4Al12, crystallizing in the Gd3Ru4Al12-type hexagonal crystal structure, by measurements in the range 1.8-300 K with bulk experimental techniques (ac and dc magnetization, heat-capacity and magnetoresistance). The main finding is that the Tb compound, known to order antiferromagnetically below (T_N=) 22 K, shows glassy characteristics at lower temperatures (<15K), thus characterizing this compound as a re-entrant spin-glass. The data reveal that glassy phase is quite complex and is of a cluster type. Since the glassy behavior was not seen for the Gd analogue in the past literature, this finding for the Tb compound emphasizes that this kagome family could provide an opportunity to explore the role of higher order (such as quadrupole) in bringing out magnetic frustration. Additional findings reported here for this compound are: (i) The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity in the range 12 - 20 K are found to be hysteretic leading to a magnetic phase in this temperature range, mimicking disorder-induced first-order magnetic phase-transition. (ii) Features attributable to an interesting magnetic phase co-existence phenomenon in the magnetoresistance in zero field, after cycling across metamagnetic transition fields, are observed. With respect to the Er compound, we do not find any evidence for long-range magnetic ordering down to 2 K, but this appears to be on the verge of magnetic order at 2 K.
