Structure of eigenstates in a periodic quasi-1D waveguide with a rough surface is studied both analytically and numerically. We have found a large number of regular eigenstates for any high energy. They result in a very slow convergence to the classical limit in which the eigenstates are expected to be completely ergodic. As a consequence, localization properties of eigenstates originated from unperturbed transverse channels with low indexes, are strongly localized (delocalized) in the momentum (coordinate) representation. These eigenstates were found to have a quite unexpeted form that manifests a kind of repulsion from the rough surface. Our results indicate that standard statistical approaches for ballistic localization in such waveguides seem to be unappropriate.

We study chaotic properties of eigenstates for periodic quasi-1D waveguides with regular and random surfaces. Main attention is paid to the role of the so-called gradient scattering which is due to large gradients in the scattering walls. We demonstrate numerically and explain theoretically that the gradient scattering can be quite strong even if the amplitude of scattering profiles is very small in comparison with the width of waveguides.
Unlike random potentials, quasi-periodic modulation can induce localisation-delocalisation transitions in one dimension. In this article, we analyse the implications of this for symmetry breaking in the quasi-periodically modulated quantum Ising chain. Although weak modulation is irrelevant, strong modulation induces new ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases which are fully localised and gapless. The quasi-periodic potential and localised excitations lead to quantum criticality that is intermediate to that of the clean and randomly disordered models with exponents of $ u=1^{+}$, and $zapprox 1.9$, $Delta_sigma approx 0.16$, $Delta_gammaapprox 0.63$ (up to logarithmic corrections). Technically, the clean Ising transition is destabilized by logarithmic wandering of the local reduced couplings. We conjecture that the wandering coefficient $w$ controls the universality class of the quasi-periodic transition and show its stability to smooth perturbations that preserve the quasi-periodic structure of the model.

We introduce phase space concepts to describe quantum states in a disordered system. The merits of an inverse participation ratio defined on the basis of the Husimi function are demonstrated by a numerical study of the Anderson model in one, two, and three dimensions. Contrary to the inverse participation ratios in real and momentum space, the corresponding phase space quantity allows for a distinction between the ballistic, diffusive, and localized regimes on a unique footing and provides valuable insight into the structure of the eigenstates.

We study Anderson localization of single particles in continuous, correlated, one-dimensional disordered potentials. We show that tailored correlations can completely change the energy-dependence of the localization length. By considering two suitable models of disorder, we explicitly show that disorder correlations can lead to a nonmonotonic behavior of the localization length versus energy. Numerical calculations performed within the transfer-matrix approach and analytical calculations performed within the phase formalism up to order three show excellent agreement and demonstrate the effect. We finally show how the nonmonotonic behavior of the localization length with energy can be observed using expanding ultracold-atom gases.
It is typically assumed that disorder is essential to realize Anderson localization. Recently, a number of proposals have suggested that an interacting, translation invariant system can also exhibit localization. We examine these claims in the context of a one-dimensional spin ladder. At intermediate time scales, we find slow growth of entanglement entropy consistent with the phenomenology of many-body localization. However, at longer times, all finite wavelength spin polarizations decay in a finite time, independent of system size. We identify a single length scale which parametrically controls both the eventual spin transport times and the divergence of the susceptibility to spin glass ordering. We dub this long pre-thermal dynamical behavior, intermediate between full localization and diffusion, quasi-many body localization.
