We measure the spin lattice relaxation of the In(1) nuclei in the CeMIn_5 materials, extract quantitative information about the low energy spin dynamics of the lattice of Ce moments in both CeRhIn_5 and CeCoIn_5, and identify a crossover in the normal state. Above a temperature T* the Ce lattice exhibits Kondo gas behavior characterized by local fluctuations of independently screened moments; below T* both systems exhibit a Kondo liquid regime in which interactions between the local moments contribute to the spin dynamics. Both the antiferromagnetic and superconducting ground states in these systems emerge from the Kondo liquid regime. Our analysis provides strong evidence for quantum criticality in CeCoIn_5.

The XY pyrochlore Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, with pseudo spin 1/2 at the Yb$^{3+}$ site, has been celebrated as potential host for the quantum spin ice state. The substitution of non-magnetic Ti with Pt gives Yb$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$, a system with remarkably similar magnetic properties. The large nuclear gyromagnetic ratio ($gamma_{n}/2 pi = 9.15$~MHz/T) of $^{195}$Pt makes Yb$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ an ideal material for NMR investigation of its unconventional magnetic properties. Based on the $^{195}$Pt nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and the magnetic specific heat $C_{p}$ measured in a broad range of magnetic field $B_{ext}$, we demonstrate that the field-induced magnon gap linearly decreases with $B_{ext}$ but additional low energy mode of spin excitations emerge below $sim 0.5$~T.
We report Cu and La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the title compound that reveal an inhomogeneous glassy behavior of the spin dynamics. A low temperature peak in the La spin lattice relaxation rate and the ``wipeout of Cu intensity both arise from these slow electronic spin fluctuations that reveal a distribution of activation energies. Inhomogeneous slowing of spin fluctuations appears to be a general feature of doped lanthanum cuprate.
We present detailed ESR investigations on single crystals of the low-dimensional quantum magnet TiOCl. The anisotropy of the g-factor indicates a stable orbital configuration below room temperature, and allows to estimate the energy of the first excited state as 0.3(1) eV ruling out a possible degeneracy of the orbital ground state. Moreover, we discuss the possible spin relaxation mechanisms in TiOCl and analyze the angular and temperature dependence of the linewidth up to 250 K in terms of anisotropic exchange interactions. Towards higher temperatures an exponential increase of the linewidth is observed, indicating an additional relaxation mechanism.
We review recent studies of spin dynamics in rare-earth orthorhombic perovskite oxides of the type $RM$O$_3$, where $R$ is a rare-earth ion and $M$ is a transition-metal ion, using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering (INS). After a short introduction to the magnetic INS technique in general, the results of INS experiments on both transition-metal and rare-earth subsystems for four selected compounds (YbFeO$_3$, TmFeO$_3$, YFeO$_3$, YbAlO$_3$) are presented. We show that the spectrum of magnetic excitations consists of two types of collective modes that are well separated in energy: gapped magnons with a typical bandwidth of $<$70 meV, associated with the antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered transition-metal subsystem, and AFM fluctuations of $<$5 meV within the rare-earth subsystem, with no hybridization of those modes. We discuss the high-energy conventional magnon excitations of the 3$d$ subsystem only briefly, and focus in more detail on the spectacular dynamics of the rare-earth sublattice in these materials. We observe that the nature of the ground state and the low-energy excitation strongly depends on the identity of the rare-earth ion. In the case of non-Kramers ions, the low-symmetry crystal field completely eliminates the degeneracy of the multiplet state, creating a rich magnetic field-temperature phase diagram. In the case of Kramers ions, the resulting ground state is at least a doublet, which can be viewed as an effective quantum spin-1/2. Equally important is the fact that in Yb-based materials the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction dominates in one direction, despite the three-dimensional nature of the orthoperovskite crystal structure. The observation of a fractional spinon continuum and quantum criticality in YbAlO$_3$ demonstrates that Kramers rare-earth based magnets can provide realizations of various aspects of quantum low-dimensional physics.
We investigate the generic features of the low energy dynamical spin structure factor of the Kitaev honeycomb quantum spin liquid perturbed away from its exact soluble limit by generic symmetry-allowed exchange couplings. We find that the spin gap persists in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model, but generally vanishes provided more generic symmetry-allowed interactions exist. We formulate the generic expansion of the spin operator in terms of fractionalized Majorana fermion operators according to the symmetry enriched topological order of the Kitaev spin liquid, described by its projective symmetry group. The dynamical spin structure factor displays power-law scaling bounded by Dirac cones in the vicinity of the $Gamma$, $K$ and $K$ points of the Brillouin zone, rather than the spin gap found for the exactly soluble point.
