Resistivity, optical, and angle-resolved photoemission experiments reveal unusual one-dimensional electronic properties of highly anisotropic SrNbO$_{3.41}$. Along the conducting chain direction we find an extremely small energy gap of only a few meV at the Fermi level. A discussion in terms of typical 1D instabilities (Peierls, Mott-Hubbard) shows that neither seems to provide a satisfactory explanation for the unique properties of SrNbO$_{3.41}$.

Rb-NMR study has been performed on the quasi-one dimensional competing spin chain Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions on nearest neighboring and next nearest neighboring spins, respectively. The system changes from a gapped ground state at zero field to the gapless state at H_C simeq 2 T, where the existence of magnetic order below 1 K was demonstrated by a broadening of NMR spectrum, associated with a critical divergence of 1/T_1. In higher temperature region, 1/T_1 showed a power-law type temperature dependence, from which the field dependence of Luttinger parameter K was obtained and compared with theoretical calculations based on the spin nematic Tomonaga Luttinger Liquid (TLL) state.
We report the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on the low-dimensional antiferromagnet Rb4Cu(MoO4)3. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to 50 mK implying a ratio T_N/J<0.005 (where J is the principal exchange strength along the spin chains) and an effective ratio of interchain to intrachain exchange of |J_perp/J|<2 x 10^-3, making the material an excellent realization of a one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We probe the persistent spin excitations at low temperatures and find that ballistic spin transport dominates the excitations detected below 0.3 K.

We have investigated the quasiparticle dynamics and collective excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional material ZrTe$_5$ using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our time-domain results reveal two coherent oscillations having extremely low energies of $hbaromega_1sim$0.33 meV (0.08 THz) and $hbaromega_2sim$1.9 meV (0.45 THz), which are softened as the temperature approaches two different critical temperatures ($sim$54 K and $sim$135 K). We attribute these two collective excitations to the amplitude mode of charge density wave instabilities in ZrTe$_5$ with tremendously small nesting wave vectors. Furthermore, scattering with the $hbaromega_2$ mode may result in a peculiar quasiparticle decay process with a timescale of $sim$1-2 ps below the transition temperature $T^*$ ($sim$135 K). Our findings provide pivotal information for studying the fluctuating order parameters and their associated quasiparticle dynamics in various low-dimensional topological systems and other materials.

We investigated magnetic and thermodynamic properties of $S$ = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuMoO$_4$(OH) through single crystalline magnetization and heat capacity measurements. At zero field, it behaves as a uniform $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with $J$ = 238 K, and exhibits a canted antiferromagnetism below $T_mathrm{N}$ = 1.52 K. In addition, a magnetic field $H$ induces the anisotropy in magnetization and opens a gap in the spin excitation spectrum. These properties are understood in terms of an effective staggered field induced by staggered g-tensors and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. Temperature-dependencies of the heat capacity and their field variations are consistent with those expected for quantum sine-Gordon model, indicating that spin excitations consist of soliton, anti-soliton and breather modes. From field-dependencies of the soliton mass, the staggered field normalized by the uniform field $c_mathrm{s}$ is estimated as 0.041, 0.174, and 0.030, for $H parallel a$, $b$, and $c$, respectively. Such a large variation of $c_mathrm{s}$ is understood as the combination of staggered g-tensors and DM interactions which induce the staggered field in the opposite direction for $H parallel a$ and $c$ but almost the same direction for $H parallel b$ at each Cu site.
The photoconductivity spectra of NbS_3 (phase I) crystals are studied. A drop of photoconductivity corresponding to the Peierls gap edge is observed. Reproducible spectral features are found at energies smaller the energy gap value. The first one is a peak at the energy 0.6 eV that is close to the midgap one. It has a threshold-like dependence of the amplitude on the electrical field applied. Another feature is a peak at the energy 0.9 eV near to the edge of the gap. We ascribe the origin of this peak to the stacking faults. The third one are continuous states between these peaks at energies 0.6-0.8 eV. We observed bleaching of the photoconductivity even below zero at this energies in the high electric field (700 V/cm) and under additional illumination applied.
