We consider pumping through a small quantum dot separated from the leads by two point contacts, whose conductances, $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$, serve as pumping parameters. When the dot is pincched, we find that there is a resonance line in the parameter plane ${G_{1}, G_{2}}$ along which the Fermi energy in the leads aligns with the energy of the quasi-bound state in the quantum dot. When $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ are modulated periodically and adiabatically such that the pumping contour defined by $G_{1}=G_{1}(t)$ and $ G_{2}=G_{2}(t)$ encircles the resonance line, the current is quantized: the charge pumped through the dot during each period of the modulation is close to a single electronic charge.

We demonstrate charge pumping in semiconducting carbon nanotubes by a traveling potential wave. From the observation of pumping in the nanotube insulating state we deduce that transport occurs by packets of charge being carried along by the wave. By tuning the potential of a side gate, transport of either electron or hole packets can be realized. Prospects for the realization of nanotube based single-electron pumps are discussed.
We investigate charge and spin transport through an adiabatically driven, strongly interacting quantum dot weakly coupled to two metallic contacts with finite bias voltage. Within a kinetic equation approach, we identify coefficients of response to the time-dependent external driving and relate these to the concepts of charge and spin emissivities previously discussed within the time-dependent scattering matrix approach. Expressed in terms of auxiliary vector fields, the response coefficients allow for a straightforward analysis of recently predicted interaction-induced pumping under periodic modulation of the gate and bias voltage [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 226803 (2010)]. We perform a detailed study of this effect and the related adiabatic Coulomb blockade spectroscopy, and, in particular, extend it to spin pumping. Analytic formulas for the pumped charge and spin in the regimes of small and large driving amplitude are provided for arbitrary bias. In the absence of a magnetic field, we obtain a striking, simple relation between the pumped charge at zero bias and at bias equal to the Coulomb charging energy. At finite magnetic field, there is a possibility to have interaction-induced pure spin pumping at this finite bias value, and generally, additional features appear in the pumped charge. For large-amplitude adiabatic driving, the magnitude of both the pumped charge and spin at the various resonances saturate at values which are independent of the specific shape of the pumping cycle. Each of these values provide an independent, quantitative measurement of the junction asymmetry.

We study resonant all-electric adiabatic spin pumping through a quantum dot with two nearby levels by using a Fermi liquid approach in the strongly interacting regime, combined with a projective numerical renormalization group (NRG) theory. Due to spin-orbit coupling, a strong spin pumping resonance emerges at every charging transition, which allows for the transfer of a spin $~ hbar/2$ through the device in a single pumping cycle. Depending on the precise geometry of the device, controlled pure spin pumping is also possible.

The adiabatic topological pumping is proposed by periodically modulating a semiconductor nanowire double-quantum-dot chain. We demonstrate that the quantized charge transport can be achieved by a nontrivial modulation of the quantum-dot well and barrier potentials. When the quantum-dot well potential is replaced by a time-dependent staggered magnetic field, the topological spin pumping can be realized by periodically modulating the barrier potentials and magnetic field. We also demonstrate that in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the double-quantum-dot chain can be used to implement the topological spin pumping. However, the pumped spin in this case can have a quantization axis other than the applied magnetic field direction. Moreover, we show that all the adiabatic topological pumping are manifested by the presence of gapless edge states traversing the band gap as a function of time.
We propose a random matrix theory to describe the influence of a time-dependent external field on electron transport through open quantum dots. We describe the generation of the current by an oscillating field for the dot, connected to two leads with equal chemical potentials. For low frequency fields our results correspond to adiabatic charge pumping. Finite current can be produced if the system goes along a closed loop in parameter space, which covers a finite area. At high frequency finite current is produced even if the loop is a line in parameter space. This result can be explained in the same way as adiabatic pumping but considering the evolution of the system in phase space rather than in parametric space.
