We analyze a class of piecewise linear parabolic maps on the torus, namely those obtained by considering a linear map with double eigenvalue one and taking modulo one in each component. We show that within this two parameter family of maps, the set of noninvertible maps is open and dense. For cases where the entries in the matrix are rational we show that the maximal invariant set has positive Lebesgue measure and we give bounds on the measure. For several examples we find expressions for the measure of the invariant set but we leave open the question as to whether there are parameters for which this measure is zero.

In this paper, we show that for exact area-preserving twist maps on annulus, the invariant circles with a given rotation number can be destroyed by arbitrarily small Gevrey-$alpha$ perturbations of the integrable generating function in the $C^r$ topology with $r<4-frac{2}{alpha}$, where $alpha>1$.
We prove that any $C^{1+BV}$ degree $d geq 2$ circle covering $h$ having all periodic orbits weakly expanding, is conjugate in the same smoothness class to a metrically expanding map. We use this to connect the space of parabolic external maps (coming from the theory of parabolic-like maps) to metrically expanding circle coverings.
We propose to compute approximations to general invariant sets in dynamical systems by minimizing the distance between an appropriately selected finite set of points and its image under the dynamics. We demonstrate, through computational experiments that this approach can successfully converge to approximations of (maximal) invariant sets of arbitrary topology, dimension and stability as, e.g., saddle type invariant sets with complicated dynamics. We further propose to extend this approach by adding a Lennard-Jones type potential term to the objective function which yields more evenly distributed approximating finite point sets and perform corresponding numerical experiments.

We provide an abstract framework for the study of certain spectral properties of parabolic systems; specifically, we determine under which general conditions to expect the presence of absolutely continuous spectral measures. We use these general conditions to derive results for spectral properties of time-changes of unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces of semisimple groups regarding absolutely continuous spectrum as well as maximal spectral type; the time-changes of the horocycle flow are special cases of this general category of flows. In addition we use the general conditions to derive spectral results for twisted horocycle flows and to rederive certain spectral results for skew products over translations and Furstenberg transformations.

We show how the existence of three objects, $Omega_{rm trap}$, ${bf W}$, and $C$, for a continuous piecewise-linear map $f$ on $mathbb{R}^N$, implies that $f$ has a topological attractor with a positive Lyapunov exponent. First, $Omega_{rm trap} subset mathbb{R}^N$ is trapping region for $f$. Second, ${bf W}$ is a finite set of words that encodes the forward orbits of all points in $Omega_{rm trap}$. Finally, $C subset T mathbb{R}^N$ is an invariant expanding cone for derivatives of compositions of $f$ formed by the words in ${bf W}$. We develop an algorithm that identifies these objects for two-dimensional homeomorphisms comprised of two affine pieces. The main effort is in the explicit construction of $Omega_{rm trap}$ and $C$. Their existence is equated to a set of computable conditions in a general way. This results in a computer-assisted proof of chaos throughout a relatively large regime of parameter space. We also observe how the failure of $C$ to be expanding can coincide with a bifurcation of $f$. Lyapunov exponents are evaluated using one-sided directional derivatives so that forward orbits that intersect a switching manifold (where $f$ is not differentiable) can be included in the analysis.
