The kinetics of a periodically driven nonlinear oscillator, bistable in a nearly resonant field, has been investigated theoretically and through analogue experiments. An activation dependence of the probabilities of fluctuational transitions between the coexisting attractors has been observed, and the activation energies of the transitions have been calculated and measured for a wide range of parameters. The position of the kinetic phase transition (KPT), at which the populations of the attractors are equal, has been established. A range of critical phenomena is shown to arise in the vicinity of the KPT including, in particular, the appearance of a supernarrow peak in the spectral density of the fluctuations, and the occurrence of high-frequency stochastic resonance (HFSR). The experimental measurements of the transition probabilities, the KPT line, the multipeaked spectral densities, the strength of the supernarrow spectral peak, and of the HFSR effect are shown to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

The multiple time scale dynamics induced by radiation pressure and photothermal effects in a high-finesse optomechanical resonator is experimentally studied. At difference with two-dimensional slow-fast systems, the transition from the quasiharmonic to the relaxational regime occurs via chaotic canard explosions, where large-amplitude relaxation spikes are separated by an irregular number of subthreshold oscillations. We also show that this regime coexists with other periodic attractors, on which the trajectories evolve on a substantially faster time scale. The experimental results are reproduced and analyzed by means of a detailed physical model of our system.
Biological neurons receive multiple noisy oscillatory signals, and their dynamical response to the superposition of these signals is of fundamental importance for information processing in the brain. Here we study the response of neural systems to the weak envelope modulation signal, which is superimposed by two periodic signals with different frequencies. We show that stochastic resonance occurs at the beat frequency in neural systems at the single-neuron as well as the population level. The performance of this frequency-difference-dependent stochastic resonance is influenced by both the beat frequency and the two forcing frequencies. Compared to a single neuron, a population of neurons is more efficient in detecting the information carried by the weak envelope modulation signal at the beat frequency. Furthermore, an appropriate fine-tuning of the excitation-inhibition balance can further optimize the response of a neural ensemble to the superimposed signal. Our results thus introduce and provide insights into the generation and modulation mechanism of the frequency-difference-dependent stochastic resonance in neural systems.

We consider a quasi one-dimensional chain of N chaotic scattering elements with periodic boundary conditions. The classical dynamics of this system is dominated by diffusion. The quantum theory, on the other hand, depends crucially on whether the chain is disordered or invariant under lattice translations. In the disordered case, the spectrum is dominated by Anderson localization whereas in the periodic case, the spectrum is arranged in bands. We investigate the special features in the spectral statistics for a periodic chain. For finite N, we define spectral form factors involving correlations both for identical and non-identical Bloch numbers. The short-time regime is treated within the semiclassical approximation, where the spectral form factor can be expressed in terms of a coarse-grained classical propagator which obeys a diffusion equation with periodic boundary conditions. In the long-time regime, the form factor decays algebraically towards an asymptotic constant. In the limit $Ntoinfty$, we derive a universal scaling function for the form factor. The theory is supported by numerical results for quasi one-dimensional periodic chains of coupled Sinai billiards.

The susceptibility of an overdamped Markov system fluctuating in a bistable potential of general form is obtained by analytic solution of the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) for low noise intensities. The results are discussed in the context of the LRT theory of stochastic resonance. They go over into recent results (Gang Hu et al {em Phys. Lett. A} {bf 172}, 21, 1992) obtained from the FPE for the case of a symmetrical potential, and they coincide with the LRT results (Dykman et al, {em Phys. Rev. Lett.} {bf 65}, 2606, 1990; {em JETP Lett} {bf 52}, 144, 1990; {em Phys. Rev. Lett.} {bf 68}, 2985, 1992) obtained for the general case of bistable systems.
We study a noisy oscillator with pulse delayed feedback, theoretically and in an electronic experimental implementation. Without noise, this system has multiple stable periodic regimes. We consider two types of noise: i) phase noise acting on the oscillator state variable and ii) stochastic fluctuations of the coupling delay. For both types of stochastic perturbations the system hops between the deterministic regimes, but it shows dramatically different scaling properties for different types of noise. The robustness to conventional phase noise increases with coupling strength. However for stochastic variations in the coupling delay, the lifetimes decrease exponentially with the coupling strength. We provide an analytic explanation for these scaling properties in a linearised model. Our findings thus indicate that the robustness of a system to stochastic perturbations strongly depends on the nature of these perturbations.
