We observed the HH24-26 region in the L1630 Orion molecular cloud complex with the X-ray observatory ASCA in the 0.5$-$10 keV band. X-ray emission was detected from the T Tauri star SSV61 and from the region where the Class I protostars SSV63E and SSV63W are located (hereafter SSV63E+W). The spectra of both SSV63E+W and SSV61 are well explained by an optically thin thermal plasma model. The spectrum of the T Tauri star SSV61 has a low temperature of $kT=0.9$ (0.7$-$1.2) keV and a moderate absorption of $N_{rm{H}}=1.3$ (0.9$-$1.7) $times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, while that of the protostar SSV63E+W has a high temperature of $kT=5.0$ (3.3$-$7.9) keV and a heavy absorption of $N_{rm{H}}=1.5$ (1.2$-$1.8) $times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. The X-ray light curve of SSV63E+W showed a flare during the observation. The peak flux reached about 9 times that of the quiescent flux. The temperature and the absorption column density do not change conspicuously during the flare. The 0.5$-$10 keV luminosity of SSV63E+W was about $1times10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the quiescent state. The present detection of hard X-rays from SSV63E+W is remarkable, because this is the first X-ray detection of a protostar in Orion.

We obtained near infrared (NIR) imaging with the Subaru Telescope of the class 0 protostar candidates in the Orion Molecular Cloud-3, two of which were discovered to have X-ray emission by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We found strong evidence for the class~0 nature of the X-ray sources. First, our deep K-band image shows no emission brighter than 19.6 mag from both of these X-ray sources. Since class I protostars or class II T Tauri stars should be easily detected in the NIR with this sensitivity, the lack of K-band detection suggests that they are likely much more obscured than class I protostars. Second, our H2 v=1-0 S(1) image shows a bubble-like feature from one of the X-ray class 0 protostar candidates, which reinforces the idea that this is a class 0 protostar. We also discuss the nature of nine NIR sources found in our deep image based on their colors, spatial coincidence with millimeter cores, and the properties of their X-ray counterparts.

We report on the results of a deep 1.6 Ms INTEGRAL observation of the Cassiopeia region performed from December 2003 to February 2004. Eleven sources were detected with the imager IBIS-ISGRI at energies above 20 keV, including three new hard X-ray sources. Most remarkable is the discovery of hard X-ray emission from the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61, which shows emission up to ~150 keV with a very hard power-law spectrum with photon index Gamma = 0.73 +/- 0.17. We derived flux upper limits for energies between 0.75 MeV and 30 MeV using archival data from the Compton telescope COMPTEL. In order to reconcile the very hard spectrum of 4U 0142+61 measured by INTEGRAL with the COMPTEL upper limits, the spectrum has to bend or break between ~75 keV and ~750 keV. 1E 2259+586, another anomalous X-ray pulsar in this region, was not detected. INTEGRAL and COMPTEL upper limits are provided. The new INTEGRAL sources are IGR J00370+6122 and IGR J00234+6144. IGR J00370+6122 is a new supergiant X-ray binary with an orbital period of 15.665 +/- 0.006 days, derived from RXTE All-Sky Monitor data. Archival BeppoSAX Wide-Field Camera data yielded four more detections. IGR J00234+6144 still requires a proper identification. Other sources for which INTEGRAL results are presented are high-mass X-ray binaries 2S 0114+650, Gamma~Cas, RX J0146.9+6121 and 4U 2206+54, intermediate polar V709 Cas and 1ES 0033+595, an AGN of the BL-Lac type. For each of these sources the hard X-ray spectra are fitted with different models and compared with earlier published results.

We report the detection during the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) of two soft, constant, and faint X-ray sources associated with the Herbig-Haro object HH210. HH210 is located at the tip of the NNE finger of the emission line system bursting out of the BN-KL complex, northwest of the Trapezium cluster in the OMC-1 molecular cloud. Using a recent Halpha image obtained with the ACS imager on board HST, and taking into account the known proper motions of HH210 emission knots, we show that the position of the brightest X-ray source, COUP703, coincides with the emission knot 154-040a of HH210, which is the emission knot of HH210 having the highest tangential velocity (425 km/s). The second X-ray source, COUP704, is located on the complicated emission tail of HH210 close to an emission line filament and has no obvious optical/infrared counterpart. Spectral fitting indicates for both sources a plasma temperature of ~0.8 MK and absorption-corrected X-ray luminosities of about 1E30 erg/s (0.5-2.0 keV). These X-ray sources are well explained by a model invoking a fast-moving, radiative bow shock in a neutral medium with a density of ~12000 cm^{-3}. The X-ray detection of COUP704 therefore reveals, in the complicated HH210 region, an energetic shock not yet identified at other wavelengths.
Forty new low mass members with spectral types ranging from M4-M9 have been confirmed in the Orion Molecular Cloud 2/3 region. Through deep, I, z, J, H, K photometry of a 20 x 20 field in OMC 2/3, we selected brown dwarf candidates for follow-up spectroscopy. Low resolution far-red and near-infrared spectra were obtained for the candidates, and 19 young brown dwarfs in the OMC 2/3 region are confirmed. They exhibit spectral types of M6.5-M9, corresponding to approximate masses of 0.075-0.015 M_solar using the evolutionary models of Baraffe et al. (1998). At least one of these bona fide young brown dwarfs has strong Halpha emission, indicating that it is actively accreting. In addition, we confirm 21 new low mass members with spectral types of M4-M6, corresponding to approximate masses of 0.35-0.10 M_solar in OMC 2/3. By comparing pre-main sequence tracks to the positions of the members in the H-R diagram, we find that most of the brown dwarfs are less than 1 Myr, but find a number of low mass stars with inferred ages greater than 3 Myr. The discrepancy in the stellar and substellar ages is due to our selection of only low luminosity sources; however, the presence of such objects implies the presence of an age spread in the OMC 2/3 region. We discuss possible reasons for this apparent age spread.
We have mapped six molecular cloud cores in the Orion A giant molecular cloud (GMC), whose kinetic temperatures range from 10 to 30 K, in CCS and N2H+ with Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope to study their chemical characteristics. We identified 31 intensity peaks in the CCS and N2H+ emission in these molecular cloud cores. It is found for cores with temperatures lower than ~ 25 K that the column density ratio of N(N2H+)/N(CCS) is low toward starless core regions while it is high toward star-forming core regions, in case that we detected both of the CCS and N2H+ emission. This is very similar to the tendency found in dark clouds (kinetic temperature ~ 10 K). The criterion found in the Orion A GMC is N(N2H+)/N(CCS) ~ 2-3. In some cases, the CCS emission is detected toward protostars as well as the N2H+ emission. Secondary late-stage CCS peak in the chemical evolution caused by CO depletion may be a possible explanation for this. We found that the chemical variation of CCS and N2H+ can also be used as a tracer of evolution in warm (10-25 K) GMC cores. On the other hand, some protostars do not accompany N2H+ intensity peaks but are associated with dust continuum emitting regions, suggesting that the N2H+ abundance might be decreased due to CO evaporation in warmer star-forming sites.
