Weighted Lie algebroids were recently introduced as Lie algebroids equipped with an additional compatible non-negative grading, and represent a wide generalisation of the notion of a VB -algebroid. There is a close relation between two term representations up to homotopy of Lie algebroids and VB - algebroids. In this paper we show how this relation generalises to weighted Lie algebroids and in doing so we uncover new and natural examples of higher term representations up to homotopy of Lie algebroids. Moreover, we show how the van Est theorem generalises to weighted objects.

These are the lecture notes from my course in the January 2011 School on Moduli Spaces at the Newton Institute. I give an introduction to Higgs bundles and their application to the study of character varieties for surface group representations.
We construct many``low rank algebraic vector bundles on ``simple smooth affine varieties of high dimension. In a related direction, we study the existence of polynomial representatives of elements in the classical (unstable) homotopy groups of spheres. Using techniques of A^1-homotopy theory, we are able to produce ``motivic lifts of elements in classical homotopy groups of spheres; these lifts provide interesting polynomial maps of spheres and algebraic vector bundles.
In this paper, we consider a generalization of the theory of Higgs bundles over a smooth complex projective curve in which the twisting of the Higgs field by the canonical bundle of the curve is replaced by a rank 2 vector bundle. We define a Hitchin map and give a spectral correspondence. We also state a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for a generalization of the Hitchin equations to this situation. In a certain sense, this theory lies halfway between the theories of Higgs bundles on a curve and on a higher dimensional variety.
Let ${mathcal B}_g(r)$ be the moduli space of triples of the form $(X,, K^{1/2}_X,, F)$, where $X$ is a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g, geq, 2$, $K^{1/2}_X$ is a theta characteristic on $X$, and $F$ is a stable vector bundle on $X$ of rank $r$ and degree zero. We construct a $T^*{mathcal B}_g(r)$--torsor ${mathcal H}_g(r)$ over ${mathcal B}_g(r)$. This generalizes on the one hand the torsor over the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$, on a fixed Riemann surface $Y$, given by the moduli space of holomorphic connections on the stable vector bundles of rank $r$ on $Y$, and on the other hand the torsor over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces given by the moduli space of Riemann surfaces with a projective structure. It is shown that ${mathcal H}_g(r)$ has a holomorphic symplectic structure compatible with the $T^*{mathcal B}_g(r)$--torsor structure. We also describe ${mathcal H}_g(r)$ in terms of the second order matrix valued differential operators. It is shown that ${mathcal H}_g(r)$ is identified with the $T^*{mathcal B}_g(r)$--torsor given by the sheaf of holomorphic connections on the theta line bundle over ${mathcal B}_g(r)$.
