We present an effective system adapted from the end-to-end neural coreference resolution model, targeting on the task of anaphora resolution in dialogues. Three aspects are specifically addressed in our approach, including the support of singletons, encoding speakers and turns throughout dialogue interactions, and knowledge transfer utilizing existing resources. Despite the simplicity of our adaptation strategies, they are shown to bring significant impact to the final performance, with up to 27 F1 improvement over the baseline. Our final system ranks the 1st place on the leaderboard of the anaphora resolution track in the CRAC 2021 shared task, and achieves the best evaluation results on all four datasets.

Voice-controlled house-hold devices, like Amazon Echo or Google Home, face the problem of performing speech recognition of device-directed speech in the presence of interfering background speech, i.e., background noise and interfering speech from another person or media device in proximity need to be ignored. We propose two end-to-end models to tackle this problem with information extracted from the anchored segment. The anchored segment refers to the wake-up word part of an audio stream, which contains valuable speaker information that can be used to suppress interfering speech and background noise. The first method is called Multi-source Attention where the attention mechanism takes both the speaker information and decoder state into consideration. The second method directly learns a frame-level mask on top of the encoder output. We also explore a multi-task learning setup where we use the ground truth of the mask to guide the learner. Given that audio data with interfering speech is rare in our training data set, we also propose a way to synthesize noisy speech from clean speech to mitigate the mismatch between training and test data. Our proposed methods show up to 15% relative reduction in WER for Amazon Alexa live data with interfering background speech without significantly degrading on clean speech.
Attention-based methods and Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) network have been promising research directions for end-to-end Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). The joint CTC/Attention model has achieved great success by utilizing both architectures during multi-task training and joint decoding. In this work, we present a novel Multi-Encoder Multi-Resolution (MEMR) framework based on the joint CTC/Attention model. Two heterogeneous encoders with different architectures, temporal resolutions and separate CTC networks work in parallel to extract complimentary acoustic information. A hierarchical attention mechanism is then used to combine the encoder-level information. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model, experiments are conducted on Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and CHiME-4, resulting in relative Word Error Rate (WER) reduction of 18.0-32.1%. Moreover, the proposed MEMR model achieves 3.6% WER in the WSJ eval92 test set, which is the best WER reported for an end-to-end system on this benchmark.

In knowledge grounded conversation, domain knowledge plays an important role in a special domain such as Music. The response of knowledge grounded conversation might contain multiple answer entities or no entity at all. Although existing generative question answering (QA) systems can be applied to knowledge grounded conversation, they either have at most one entity in a response or cannot deal with out-of-vocabulary entities. We propose a fully data-driven generative dialogue system GenDS that is capable of generating responses based on input message and related knowledge base (KB). To generate arbitrary number of answer entities even when these entities never appear in the training set, we design a dynamic knowledge enquirer which selects different answer entities at different positions in a single response, according to different local context. It does not rely on the representations of entities, enabling our model deal with out-of-vocabulary entities. We collect a human-human conversation data (ConversMusic) with knowledge annotations. The proposed method is evaluated on CoversMusic and a public question answering dataset. Our proposed GenDS system outperforms baseline methods significantly in terms of the BLEU, entity accuracy, entity recall and human evaluation. Moreover, the experiments also demonstrate that GenDS works better even on small datasets.
In this work, we extend ClariNet (Ping et al., 2019), a fully end-to-end speech synthesis model (i.e., text-to-wave), to generate high-fidelity speech from multiple speakers. To model the unique characteristic of different voices, low dimensional trainable speaker embeddings are shared across each component of ClariNet and trained together with the rest of the model. We demonstrate that the multi-speaker ClariNet outperforms state-of-the-art systems in terms of naturalness, because the whole model is jointly optimized in an end-to-end manner.
A long-term goal of machine learning is to build intelligent conversational agents. One recent popular approach is to train end-to-end models on a large amount of real dialog transcripts between humans (Sordoni et al., 2015; Vinyals & Le, 2015; Shang et al., 2015). However, this approach leaves many questions unanswered as an understanding of the precise successes and shortcomings of each model is hard to assess. A contrasting recent proposal are the bAbI tasks (Weston et al., 2015b) which are synthetic data that measure the ability of learning machines at various reasoning tasks over toy language. Unfortunately, those tests are very small and hence may encourage methods that do not scale. In this work, we propose a suite of new tasks of a much larger scale that attempt to bridge the gap between the two regimes. Choosing the domain of movies, we provide tasks that test the ability of models to answer factual questions (utilizing OMDB), provide personalization (utilizing MovieLens), carry short conversations about the two, and finally to perform on natural dialogs from Reddit. We provide a dataset covering 75k movie entities and with 3.5M training examples. We present results of various models on these tasks, and evaluate their performance.
