Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) is a recently proposed Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding technique. Irrespective of the structure of the error correcting code, GRAND tries to guess the noise that corrupted the codeword in order to decode any linear error-correcting block code. GRAND Markov Order (GRAND-MO) is a variant of GRAND that is useful to decode error correcting code transmitted over communication channels with memory which are vulnerable to burst noise. Usually, interleavers and de-interleavers are used in communication systems to mitigate the effects of channel memory. Interleaving and de-interleaving introduce undesirable latency, which increases with channel memory. To prevent this added latency penalty, GRAND-MO can be directly used on the hard demodulated channel signals. This work reports the first GRAND-MO hardware architecture which achieves an average throughput of up to $52$ Gbps and $64$ Gbps for a code length of $128$ and $79$ respectively. Compared to the GRANDAB, hard-input variant of GRAND, the proposed architecture achieves $3$ dB gain in decoding performance for a target FER of $10^{-5}$. Similarly, comparing the GRAND-MO decoder with a decoder tailored for a $(79,64)$ BCH code showed that the proposed architecture achieves 33$%$ higher worst case throughput and $2$ dB gain in decoding performance.

Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) is a recently proposed approximate Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding technique that can decode any linear error-correcting block code. Ordered Reliability Bits GRAND (ORBGRAND) is a powerful variant of GRAND, which outperforms the original GRAND technique by generating error patterns in a specific order. Moreover, their simplicity at the algorithm level renders GRAND family a desirable candidate for applications that demand very high throughput. This work reports the first-ever hardware architecture for ORBGRAND, which achieves an average throughput of up to $42.5$ Gbps for a code length of $128$ at an SNR of $10$ dB. Moreover, the proposed hardware can be used to decode any code provided the length and rate constraints. Compared to the state-of-the-art fast dynamic successive cancellation flip decoder (Fast-DSCF) using a 5G polar $(128,105)$ code, the proposed VLSI implementation has $49times$ more average throughput while maintaining similar decoding performance.
Linear minimum mean-square error (L-MMSE) equalization is among the most popular methods for data detection in massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) wireless systems. While L-MMSE equalization enables near-optimal spectral efficiency, accurate knowledge of the signal and noise powers is necessary. Furthermore, corresponding VLSI designs must solve linear systems of equations, which requires high arithmetic precision, exhibits stringent data dependencies, and results in high circuit complexity. This paper proposes the first VLSI design of the NOnParametric Equalizer (NOPE), which avoids knowledge of the transmit signal and noise powers, provably delivers the performance of L-MMSE equalization for massive MU-MIMO systems, and is resilient to numerous system and hardware impairments due to its parameter-free nature. Moreover, NOPE avoids computation of a matrix inverse and only requires hardware-friendly matrix-vector multiplications. To showcase the practical advantages of NOPE, we propose a parallel VLSI architecture and provide synthesis results in 28nm CMOS. We demonstrate that NOPE performs on par with existing data detectors for massive MU-MIMO that require accurate knowledge of the signal and noise powers.
Probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) can flexibly vary the spectral efficiency (SE) of fiber-optic systems. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of PAS to bit-wise hard decision decoding (HDD) of product codes (PCs) by finding the necessary conditions to select the PC component codes. We show that PAS with PCs and HDD yields gains up to $2.7$ dB and SE improvement up to approximately $1$ bit/channel use compared to using PCs with uniform signaling and HDD. Furthermore, we employ the recently introduced iterative bounded distance decoding with combined reliability of PCs to improve performance of PAS with PCs and HDD.

A new scheme to resolve the intra-cell pilot collision for M2M communication in crowded massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is proposed. The proposed scheme permits those failed user equipments (UEs), judged by a strongest-user collision resolution (SUCR) protocol, to contend for the idle pilots, i.e., the pilots that are not selected by any UE in the initial step. This scheme is called as SUCR combined idle pilots access (SUCR-IPA). To analyze the performance of the SUCR-IPA scheme, we develop a simple method to compute the access success probability of the UEs in each random access slot (RAST). The simulation results coincide well with the analysis. It is also shown that, compared to the SUCR protocol, the proposed SUCR-IPA scheme increases the throughput of the system significantly, and thus decreases the number of access attempts dramatically.
The field of satellite communications is enjoying a renewed interest in the global telecom market, and very high throughput satellites (V/HTS), with their multiple spot-beams, are key for delivering the future rate demands. In this article, the state-of-the-art and open research challenges of signal processing techniques for V/HTS systems are presented for the first time, with focus on novel approaches for efficient interference mitigation. The main signal processing topics for the ground, satellite, and user segment are addressed. Also, the critical components for the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks are studied, such as cognitive satellite systems and satellite-terrestrial backhaul for caching. All the reviewed techniques are essential in empowering satellite systems to support the increasing demands of the upcoming generation of communication networks.
