In the current work we build a difference analog of the Caputo fractional derivative with generalized memory kernel ($_lambda$L2-1$_sigma$ formula). The fundamental features of this difference operator are studied and on its ground some difference schemes generating approximations of the second order in time for the generalized time-fractional diffusion equation with variable coefficients are worked out. We have proved stability and convergence of the given schemes in the grid $L_2$ - norm with the rate equal to the order of the approximation error. The achieved results are supported by the numerical computations performed for some test problems.

In this paper, a second-order backward difference formula (abbr. BDF2) is used to approximate first-order time partial derivative, the Riesz fractional derivatives are approximated by fourth-order compact operators, a class of new alternating-direction implicit difference scheme (abbr. ADI) is constructed for two-dimensional Riesz space fractional nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation. Stability and convergence of the numerical method are analyzed. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is effective.
A mass-conservative Lagrange--Galerkin scheme of second order in time for convection-diffusion problems is presented, and convergence with optimal error estimates is proved in the framework of $L^2$-theory. The introduced scheme maintains the advantages of the Lagrange--Galerkin method, i.e., CFL-free robustness for convection-dominated problems and a symmetric and positive coefficient matrix resulting from the discretization. In addition, the scheme conserves the mass on the discrete level. Unconditional stability and error estimates of second order in time are proved by employing two new key lemmas on the truncation error of the material derivative in conservative form and on a discrete Gronwall inequality for multistep methods. The mass-conservation property is achieved by the Jacobian multiplication technique introduced by Rui and Tabata in 2010, and the accuracy of second order in time is obtained based on the idea of the multistep Galerkin method along characteristics originally introduced by Ewing and Russel in 1981. For the first time step, the mass-conservative scheme of first order in time by Rui and Tabata in 2010 is employed, which is efficient and does not cause any loss of convergence order in the $ell^infty(L^2)$- and $ell^2(H^1_0)$-norms. For the time increment $Delta t$, the mesh size $h$ and a conforming finite element space of polynomial degree $k$, the convergence order is of $O(Delta t^2 + h^k)$ in the $ell^infty(L^2)cap ell^2(H^1_0)$-norm and of $O(Delta t^2 + h^{k+1})$ in the $ell^infty(L^2)$-norm if the duality argument can be employed. Error estimates of $O(Delta t^{3/2}+h^k)$ in discre
The aim of this paper is to develop fast second-order accurate difference schemes for solving one- and two-dimensional time distributed-order and Riesz space fractional diffusion equations. We adopt the same measures for one- and two-dimensional problems as follows: we first transform the time distributed-order fractional diffusion problem into the multi-term time-space fractional diffusion problem with the composite trapezoid formula. Then, we propose a second-order accurate difference scheme based on the interpolation approximation on a special point to solve the resultant problem. Meanwhile, the unconditional stability and convergence of the new difference scheme in $L_2$-norm are proved. Furthermore, we find that the discretizations lead to a series of Toeplitz systems which can be efficiently solved by Krylov subspace methods with suitable circulant preconditioners. Finally, numerical results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed difference methods and demonstrate the fast convergence of our preconditioned Krylov subspace methods.
Time fractional PDEs have been used in many applications for modeling and simulations. Many of these applications are multiscale and contain high contrast variations in the media properties. It requires very small time step size to perform detailed computations. On the other hand, in the presence of small spatial grids, very small time step size is required for explicit methods. Explicit methods have many advantages as we discuss in the paper. In this paper, we propose a partial explicit method for time fractional PDEs. The approach solves the forward problem on a coarse computational grid, which is much larger than spatial heterogeneities, and requires only a few degrees of freedom to be treated implicitly. Via the construction of appropriate spaces and careful stability analysis, we can show that the time step can be chosen not to depend on the contrast or scale as the coarse mesh size. Thus, one can use larger time step size in an explicit approach. We present stability theory for our proposed method and our numerical results confirm the stability findings and demonstrate the performance of the approach.
A time-fractional Allen-Cahn equation with volume constraint is first proposed by introducing a nonlocal time-dependent Lagrange multiplier. Adaptive linear second-order energy stable schemes are developed for the proposed model by combining invariant energy quadratization and scalar auxiliary variable approaches with the recent L1$^{+}$ formula. The new developed methods are proved to be volume-preserving and unconditionally energy stable on arbitrary nonuniform time meshes. The accelerated algorithm and adaptive time strategy are employed in numerical implement. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms are computationally efficient in multi-scale simulations, and appropriate for accurately resolving the intrinsically initial singularity of solution and for efficiently capturing the fast dynamics away initial time.
