Fast charging of lithium-ion batteries is crucial to increase desirability for consumers and hence accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. A major barrier to shorter charge times is the accelerated aging of the battery at higher charging rates, which can be driven by lithium plating, increased solid electrolyte interphase growth due to elevated temperatures, and particle cracking due to mechanical stress. Lithium plating depends on the overpotential of the negative electrode, and mechanical stress depends on the concentration gradient, both of which cannot be measured directly. Techniques based on physics-based models of the battery and optimal control algorithms have been developed to this end. While these methods show promise in reducing degradation, their optimization algorithms complexity can limit their implementation. In this paper, we present a method based on the constant current constant voltage (CC-CV) charging scheme, called CC-CV$eta sigma$T (VEST). The new approach is simpler to implement and can be used with any model to impose varying levels of constraints on variables pertinent to degradation, such as plating potential and mechanical stress. We demonstrate the new CC-CV$eta sigma$T charging using an electrochemical model with mechanical and thermal effects included. Furthermore, we discuss how uncertainties can be accounted for by considering safety margins for the plating and stress constraints.
We describe the architecture and algorithms of the Adaptive Charging Network (ACN), which was first deployed on the Caltech campus in early 2016 and is currently operating at over 100 other sites in the United States. The architecture enables real-time monitoring and control and supports electric vehicle (EV) charging at scale. The ACN adopts a flexible Adaptive Scheduling Algorithm based on convex optimization and model predictive control and allows for significant over-subscription of electrical infrastructure. We describe some of the practical challenges in real-world charging systems, including unbalanced three-phase infrastructure, non-ideal battery charging behavior, and quantized control signals. We demonstrate how the Adaptive Scheduling Algorithm handles these challenges, and compare its performance against baseline algorithms from the deadline scheduling literature using real workloads recorded from the Caltech ACN and accurate system models. We find that in these realistic settings, our scheduling algorithm can improve operator profit by 3.4 times over uncontrolled charging and consistently outperforms baseline algorithms when delivering energy in highly congested systems.
The rapidly growing use of lithium-ion batteries across various industries highlights the pressing issue of optimal charging control, as charging plays a crucial role in the health, safety and life of batteries. The literature increasingly adopts model predictive control (MPC) to address this issue, taking advantage of its capability of performing optimization under constraints. However, the computationally complex online constrained optimization intrinsic to MPC often hinders real-time implementation. This paper is thus proposed to develop a framework for real-time charging control based on explicit MPC (eMPC), exploiting its advantage in characterizing an explicit solution to an MPC problem, to enable real-time charging control. The study begins with the formulation of MPC charging based on a nonlinear equivalent circuit model. Then, multi-segment linearization is conducted to the original model, and applying the eMPC design to the obtained linear models leads to a charging control algorithm. The proposed algorithm shifts the constrained optimization to offline by precomputing explicit solutions to the charging problem and expressing the charging law as piecewise affine functions. This drastically reduces not only the online computational costs in the control run but also the difficulty of coding. Extensive numerical simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed eMPC charging control framework and algorithm. The research results can potentially meet the needs for real-time battery management running on embedded hardware.
This contribution presents a diagnosis scheme for batteries to detect and isolate internal faults in the form of small parameter changes. This scheme is based on an electrochemical reduced-order model of the battery, which allows the inclusion of physically meaningful faults that might affect the battery performance. The sensitivity properties of the model are analyzed. The model is then used to compute residuals based on an unscented Kalman filter. Primary residuals and a limiting covariance matrix are obtained thanks to the local approach, allowing for fault detection and isolation by chi-squared statistical tests. Results show that faults resulting in limited 0.15% capacity and 0.004% power fade can be effectively detected by the local approach. The algorithm is also able to correctly isolate faults related with sensitive parameters, whereas parameters with low sensitivity or linearly correlated are more difficult to precise.
Internal short circuits are a leading cause of battery thermal runaway, and hence a major safety issue for electric vehicles. An internal short circuit with low resistance is called a hard internal short, which causes a high internal current flow that leads to an extremely fast temperature rise, gas generation, cell swelling, and ultimately battery rupture and failure. Thus it is crucial to detect these faults immediately after they get triggered. In large battery packs with many cells in parallel, detecting an internal short circuit event using voltage is difficult due to suppression of the voltage signal from the faulty cell by the other healthy cells connected in parallel. In contrast, analyzing the gas composition in the pack enclosure can provide a robust single cell failure detection method. At elevated temperature, decomposition of the battery materials results in gas generation and cell swelling. The cell structure is designed to rupture at a critical gas pressure and vent the accumulated $CO_2$ gas, in order to prevent explosive forces. In this paper, we extend our previous work by combining the models of cell thermal dynamics, swelling, and $CO_2$ gas generation. In particular, we developed a fast and high confidence level detection method of hard internal short circuit events for a battery pack by measuring cell expansion force and monitoring $CO_2$ concentrations in a pack enclosure.
Collective behavior strongly influences the charging dynamics of quantum batteries (QBs). Here, we study the impact of nonlocal correlations on the energy stored in a system of $N$ QBs. A unitary charging protocol based on a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) quench Hamiltonian is thus introduced and analyzed. SYK models describe strongly interacting systems with nonlocal correlations and fast thermalization properties. Here, we demonstrate that, once charged, the average energy stored in the QB is very stable, realizing an ultraprecise charging protocol. By studying fluctuations of the average energy stored, we show that temporal fluctuations are strongly suppressed by the presence of nonlocal correlations at all time scales. A comparison with other paradigmatic examples of many-body QBs shows that this is linked to the collective dynamics of the SYK model and its high level of entanglement. We argue that such feature relies on the fast scrambling property of the SYK Hamiltonian, and on its fast thermalization properties, promoting this as an ideal model for the ultimate temporal stability of a generic QB. Finally, we show that the temporal evolution of the ergotropy, a quantity that characterizes the amount of extractable work from a QB, can be a useful probe to infer the thermalization properties of a many-body quantum system.
