The local minimax method (LMM) proposed in [Y. Li and J. Zhou, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 23(3), 840--865 (2001)] and [Y. Li and J. Zhou, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 24(3), 865--885 (2002)] is an efficient method to solve nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) with certain variational structures for multiple solutions. The steepest descent direction and the Armijo-type step-size search rules are adopted in the above work and playing a significant role in the performance and convergence analysis of traditional LMMs. In this paper, a new algorithm framework of the LMMs is established based on general descent directions and two normalized (strong) Wolfe-Powell-type step-size search rules. The corresponding algorithm named as the normalized Wolfe-Powell-type LMM (NWP-LMM) are introduced with its feasibility and global convergence rigorously justified for general descent directions. As a special case, the global convergence of the NWP-LMM algorithm combined with the preconditioned steepest descent (PSD) directions is also verified. Consequently, it extends the framework of traditional LMMs. In addition, conjugate gradient-type (CG-type) descent directions are utilized to speed up the LMM algorithms. Finally, extensive numerical results for several semilinear elliptic PDEs are reported to profile their multiple unstable solutions and compared for different algorithms in the LMMs family to indicate the effectiveness and robustness of our algorithms. In practice, the NWP-LMM combined with the CG-type direction indeed performs much better among its LMM companions.

In this paper, combining normalized nonmonotone search strategies with the Barzilai--Borwein-type step-size, a novel local minimax method (LMM), which is globally convergent, is proposed to find multiple (unstable) saddle points of nonconvex functionals in Hilbert spaces. Compared to traditional LMMs, this approach does not require the strict decrease of the objective functional value at each iterative step. Firstly, by introducing two kinds of normalized nonmonotone step-size search strategies to replace normalized monotone decrease conditions adopted in traditional LMMs, two types of nonmonotone LMMs are constructed. Their feasibility and convergence results are rigorously carried out. Secondly, in order to speed up the convergence of the nonmonotone LMMs, a globally convergent Barzilai--Borwein-type LMM (GBBLMM) is presented by explicitly constructing the Barzilai--Borwein-type step-size as a trial step-size of the normalized nonmonotone step-size search strategy in each iteration. Finally, the GBBLMM is implemented to find multiple unstable solutions of two classes of semilinear elliptic boundary value problems with variational structures: one is the semilinear elliptic equations with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition and another is the linear elliptic equations with semilinear Neumann boundary conditions. Extensive numerical results indicate that our approach is very effective and speeds up the LMM significantly.

Radial basis function generated finite difference (RBF-FD) methods for PDEs require a set of interpolation points which conform to the computational domain $Omega$. One of the requirements leading to approximation robustness is to place the interpolation points with a locally uniform distance around the boundary of $Omega$. However generating interpolation points with such properties is a cumbersome problem. Instead, the interpolation points can be extended over the boundary and as such completely decoupled from the shape of $Omega$. In this paper we present a modification to the least-squares RBF-FD method which allows the interpolation points to be placed in a box that encapsulates $Omega$. This way, the node placement over a complex domain in 2D and 3D is greatly simplified. Numerical experiments on solving an elliptic model PDE over complex 2D geometries show that our approach is robust. Furthermore it performs better in terms of the approximation error and the runtime vs. error compared with the classic RBF-FD methods. It is also possible to use our approach in 3D, which we indicate by providing convergence results of a solution over a thoracic diaphragm.
This paper studies numerical methods for the approximation of elliptic PDEs with lognormal coefficients of the form $-{rm div}(a abla u)=f$ where $a=exp(b)$ and $b$ is a Gaussian random field. The approximant of the solution $u$ is an $n$-term polynomial expansion in the scalar Gaussian random variables that parametrize $b$. We present a general convergence analysis of weighted least-squares approximants for smooth and arbitrarily rough random field, using a suitable random design, for which we prove optimality in the following sense: their convergence rate matches exactly or closely the rate that has been established in cite{BCDM} for best $n$-term approximation by Hermite polynomials, under the same minimial assumptions on the Gaussian random field. This is in contrast with the current state of the art results for the stochastic Galerkin method that suffers the lack of coercivity due to the lognormal nature of the diffusion field. Numerical tests with $b$ as the Brownian bridge confirm our theoretical findings.
This work is a follow-up to our previous contribution (Convergence of sparse collocation for functions of countably many Gaussian random variables (with application to elliptic PDEs), SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 2018), and contains further insights on some aspects of the solution of elliptic PDEs with lognormal diffusion coefficients using sparse grids. Specifically, we first focus on the choice of univariate interpolation rules, advocating the use of Gaussian Leja points as introduced by Narayan and Jakeman (Adaptive Leja sparse grid constructions for stochastic collocation and high-dimensional approximation, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 2014) and then discuss the possible computational advantages of replacing the standard Karhunen-Lo`eve expansion of the diffusion coefficient with the Levy-Ciesielski expansion, motivated by theoretical work of Bachmayr, Cohen, DeVore, and Migliorati (Sparse polynomial approximation of parametric elliptic PDEs. part II: lognormal coefficients, ESAIM: M2AN, 2016). Our numerical results indicate that, for the problem under consideration, Gaussian Leja collocation points outperform Gauss-Hermite and Genz-Keister nodes for the sparse grid approximation and that the Karhunen-Lo`eve expansion of the log diffusion coefficient is more appropriate than its Levy-Ciesielski expansion for purpose of sparse grid collocation.

This paper introduces a convenient solution space for the uniformly elliptic fully nonlinear path dependent PDEs. It provides a wellposedness result under standard Lipschitz-type assumptions on the nonlinearity and an additional assumption formulated on some partial differential equation defined locally by freezing the path.
