Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a promising New Radio in Unlicensed (NR-U) technology to meet with the ever-increasing data rate and connectivity requirements in future wireless networks. However, the development of NR-U networks should consider the coexistence with the incumbent Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) networks. In this paper, we introduce a novel multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) based mmWave NR-U and WiGig coexistence network for uplink transmission. Our aim for the proposed coexistence network is to maximize the spectral efficiency while ensuring the strict NR-U delay requirement and the WiGig transmission performance in real time environments. A joint user grouping, hybrid beam coordination and power control strategy is proposed, which is formulated as a Lyapunov optimization based mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) with unit-modulus and nonconvex coupling constraints. Hence, we introduce a penalty dual decomposition (PDD) framework, which first transfers the formulated MINLP into a tractable augmented Lagrangian (AL) problem. Thereafter, we integrate both convex-concave procedure (CCCP) and inexact block coordinate update (BCU) methods to approximately decompose the AL problem into multiple nested convex subproblems, which can be iteratively solved under the PDD framework. Numerical results illustrate the performance improvement ability of the proposed strategy, as well as demonstrate the effectiveness to guarantee the NR-U traffic delay and WiGig network performance.

This paper investigates the application of non-orthogonal multiple access in millimeter-Wave communications (mmWave-NOMA). Particularly, we consider downlink transmission with a hybrid beamforming structure. A user grouping algorithm is first proposed according to the channel correlations of the users. Whereafter, a joint hybrid beamforming and power allocation problem is formulated to maximize the achievable sum rate, subject to a minimum rate constraint for each user. To solve this non-convex problem with high-dimensional variables, we first obtain the solution of power allocation under arbitrary fixed hybrid beamforming, which is divided into intra-group power allocation and inter-group power allocation. Then, given arbitrary fixed analog beamforming, we utilize the approximate zero-forcing method to design the digital beamforming to minimize the inter-group interference. Finally, the analog beamforming problem with the constant-modulus constraint is solved with a proposed boundary-compressed particle swarm optimization algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed joint approach, including user grouping, hybrid beamforming and power allocation, outperforms the state-of-the-art schemes and the conventional mmWave orthogonal multiple access system in terms of achievable sum rate and energy efficiency.

This paper addresses the problem of joint downlink channel estimation and user grouping in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the motivation comes from the fact that the channel estimation performance can be improved if we exploit additional common sparsity among nearby users. In the literature, a commonly used group sparsity model assumes that users in each group share a uniform sparsity pattern. In practice, however, this oversimplified assumption usually fails to hold, even for physically close users. Outliers deviated from the uniform sparsity pattern in each group may significantly degrade the effectiveness of common sparsity, and hence bring limited (or negative) gain for channel estimation. To better capture the group sparse structure in practice, we provide a general model having two sparsity components: commonly shared sparsity and individual sparsity, where the additional individual sparsity accounts for any outliers. Then, we propose a novel sparse Bayesian learning (SBL)-based framework to address the joint channel estimation and user grouping problem under the general sparsity model. The framework can fully exploit the common sparsity among nearby users and exclude the harmful effect from outliers simultaneously. Simulation results reveal substantial performance gains over the existing state-of-the-art baselines.
Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a competitive solution to address blockage issues in millimeter wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) communications due to its capability of reshaping wireless transmission environments. Nevertheless, obtaining the channel state information of IRS-assisted systems is quite challenging because of the passive characteristics of the IRS. In this paper, we consider the problem of beam training/alignment for IRS-assisted downlink mmWave/THz systems, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) with a hybrid structure serves a single-antenna user aided by IRS. By exploiting the inherent sparse structure of the BS-IRS-user cascade channel, the beam training problem is formulated as a joint sparse sensing and phaseless estimation problem, which involves devising a sparse sensing matrix and developing an efficient estimation algorithm to identify the best beam alignment from compressive phaseless measurements. Theoretical analysis reveals that the proposed method can identify the best alignment with only a modest amount of training overhead. Simulation results show that, for both line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS scenarios, the proposed method obtains a significant performance improvement over existing state-of-art methods. Notably, it can achieve performance close to that of the exhaustive beam search scheme, while reducing the training overhead by 95%.
In this paper, using the stochastic geometry, we develop a tractable uplink modeling framework for the outage probability of both the single and multi-tier millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular networks. Each tiers mmWave base stations (BSs) are randomly located and they have particular spatial density, antenna gain, receiver sensitivity, blockage parameter and pathloss exponents. Our model takes account of the maximum power limitation and the per-user power control. More specifically, each user, which could be in line-of-sight (LOS) or non-LOS to its serving mmWave BS, controls its transmit power such that the received signal power at its serving BS is equal to a predefined threshold. Hence, a truncated channel inversion power control scheme is implemented for the uplink of mmWave cellular networks. We derive closed-form expressions for the signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) outage probability for the uplink of both the single and multi-tier mmWave cellular networks. Furthermore, we analyze the case with a dense network by utilizing the simplified model, where the LOS region is approximated as a fixed LOS disc. The results show that imposing a maximum power constraint on the user significantly affects the SINR outage probability in the uplink of mmWave cellular networks.
This paper investigates the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in millimeter wave (mmWave) communications by exploiting beamforming, user scheduling and power allocation. Random beamforming is invoked for reducing the feedback overhead of considered systems. A nonconvex optimization problem for maximizing the sum rate is formulated, which is proved to be NP-hard. The branch and bound (BB) approach is invoked to obtain the optimal power allocation policy, which is proved to converge to a global optimal solution. To elaborate further, low complexity suboptimal approach is developed for striking a good computational complexity-optimality tradeoff, where matching theory and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques are invoked for tackling the user scheduling and power allocation problems, respectively. Simulation results reveal that: i) the proposed low complexity solution achieves a near-optimal performance; and ii) the proposed mmWave NOMA systems is capable of outperforming conventional mmWave orthogonal multiple access (OMA) systems in terms of sum rate and the number of served users.
