Binaural audio gives the listener the feeling of being in the recording place and enhances the immersive experience if coupled with AR/VR. But the problem with binaural audio recording is that it requires a specialized setup which is not possible to fabricate within handheld devices as compared to traditional mono audio that can be recorded with a single microphone. In order to overcome this drawback, prior works have tried to uplift the mono recorded audio to binaural audio as a post processing step conditioning on the visual input. But all the prior approaches missed other most important information required for the task, i.e. distance of different sound producing objects from the recording setup. In this work, we argue that the depth map of the scene can act as a proxy for encoding distance information of objects in the scene and show that adding depth features along with image features improves the performance both qualitatively and quantitatively. We propose a novel encoder-decoder architecture, where we use a hierarchical attention mechanism to encode the image and depth feature extracted from individual transformer backbone, with audio features at each layer of the decoder.

Stereophonic audio, especially binaural audio, plays an essential role in immersive viewing environments. Recent research has explored generating visually guided stereophonic audios supervised by multi-channel audio collections. However, due to the requirement of professional recording devices, existing datasets are limited in scale and variety, which impedes the generalization of supervised methods in real-world scenarios. In this work, we propose PseudoBinaural, an effective pipeline that is free of binaural recordings. The key insight is to carefully build pseudo visual-stereo pairs with mono data for training. Specifically, we leverage spherical harmonic decomposition and head-related impulse response (HRIR) to identify the relationship between spatial locations and received binaural audios. Then in the visual modality, corresponding visual cues of the mono data are manually placed at sound source positions to form the pairs. Compared to fully-supervised paradigms, our binaural-recording-free pipeline shows great stability in cross-dataset evaluation and achieves comparable performance under subjective preference. Moreover, combined with binaural recordings, our method is able to further boost the performance of binaural audio generation under supervised settings.
We present a learning-based approach for generating binaural audio from mono audio using multi-task learning. Our formulation leverages additional information from two related tasks: the binaural audio generation task and the flipped audio classification task. Our learning model extracts spatialization features from the visual and audio input, predicts the left and right audio channels, and judges whether the left and right channels are flipped. First, we extract visual features using ResNet from the video frames. Next, we perform binaural audio generation and flipped audio classification using separate subnetworks based on visual features. Our learning method optimizes the overall loss based on the weighted sum of the losses of the two tasks. We train and evaluate our model on the FAIR-Play dataset and the YouTube-ASMR dataset. We perform quantitative and qualitative evaluations to demonstrate the benefits of our approach over prior techniques.
Humans can robustly recognize and localize objects by using visual and/or auditory cues. While machines are able to do the same with visual data already, less work has been done with sounds. This work develops an approach for scene understanding purely based on binaural sounds. The considered tasks include predicting the semantic masks of sound-making objects, the motion of sound-making objects, and the depth map of the scene. To this aim, we propose a novel sensor setup and record a new audio-visual dataset of street scenes with eight professional binaural microphones and a 360-degree camera. The co-existence of visual and audio cues is leveraged for supervision transfer. In particular, we employ a cross-modal distillation framework that consists of multiple vision teacher methods and a sound student method -- the student method is trained to generate the same results as the teacher methods do. This way, the auditory system can be trained without using human annotations. To further boost the performance, we propose another novel auxiliary task, coined Spatial Sound Super-Resolution, to increase the directional resolution of sounds. We then formulate the four tasks into one end-to-end trainable multi-tasking network aiming to boost the overall performance. Experimental results show that 1) our method achieves good results for all four tasks, 2) the four tasks are mutually beneficial -- training them together achieves the best performance, 3) the number and orientation of microphones are both important, and 4) features learned from the standard spectrogram and features obtained by the classic signal processing pipeline are complementary for auditory perception tasks. This paper investigates a novel task of talking face video generation solely from speeches. The speech-to-video generation technique can spark interesting applications in entertainment, customer service, and human-computer-interaction industries. Indeed, the timbre, accent and speed in speeches could contain rich information relevant to speakers appearance. The challenge mainly lies in disentangling the distinct visual attributes from audio signals. In this article, we propose a light-weight, cross-modal distillation method to extract disentangled emotional and identity information from unlabelled video inputs. The extracted features are then integrated by a generative adversarial network into talking face video clips. With carefully crafted discriminators, the proposed framework achieves realistic generation results. Experiments with observed individuals demonstrated that the proposed framework captures the emotional expressions solely from speeches, and produces spontaneous facial motion in the video output. Compared to the baseline method where speeches are combined with a static image of the speaker, the results of the proposed framework is almost indistinguishable. User studies also show that the proposed method outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of emotion expression in the generated videos.

Cross-modal correlation provides an inherent supervision for video unsupervised representation learning. Existing methods focus on distinguishing different video clips by visual and audio representations. We human visual perception could attend to regions where sounds are made, and our auditory perception could also ground their frequencies of sounding objects, which we call bidirectional local correspondence. Such supervision is intuitive but not well explored in the contrastive learning framework. This paper introduces a pretext task, Cross-Modal Attention Consistency (CMAC), for exploring the bidirectional local correspondence property. The CMAC approach aims to align the regional attention generated purely from the visual signal with the target attention generated under the guidance of acoustic signal, and do a similar alignment for frequency grounding on the acoustic attention. Accompanied by a remoulded cross-modal contrastive loss where we consider additional within-modal interactions, the CMAC approach works effectively for enforcing the bidirectional alignment. Extensive experiments on six downstream benchmarks demonstrate that CMAC can improve the state-of-the-art performance on both visual and audio modalities.
