We experimentally resolve the dispersion of multiple vibro-polariton modes issued from the strong coupling of different vibrational bands of the methylene group (CH2) in a 2.56$mu$m thick polyethylene film with the confined modes of a mid-infrared Fabry-Perot micro-cavity. We measure a Rabi frequency of 111 cm$^{-1}$ for the stretching doublet around 2950 cm$^{-1}$ and a Rabi frequency of 29 cm$^{-1}$ for the scissoring doublet around 1460 cm$^{-1}$. This simple experimental approach offers the possibility to accurately fit the measured molecular film dielectric function. We show that the polariton dispersion and Rabi splitting can be precisely predicted from numerical simulations, offering a valuable tool for the design of strongly coupled system and the development of novel molecular films with crystalline organization.

Phonon polaritons (PhPs), the collective phonon oscillations with hybridized electromagnetic fields, concentrate optical fields in the mid-infrared frequency range that matches the vibrational modes of molecules. The utilization of PhPs holds the promise for chemical sensing tools and polariton-enhanced nanospectroscopy. However, investigations and innovations on PhPs in the aqueous phase remains stagnant, because of the lack of in situ mid-infrared nano-imaging methods in water. Strong infrared absorption from water prohibits optical delivery and detection in the mid-infrared for scattering-type near-field microscopy. Here, we present our solution: the detection of photothermal responses caused by the excitation of PhPs by liquid phase peak force infrared (LiPFIR) microscopy. Characteristic interference fringes of PhPs in 10B isotope-enriched h-BN were measured in the aqueous phase and their dispersion relationship extracted. LiPFIR enables the measurement of mid-infrared PhPs in the fluid phase, opening possibilities, and facilitating the development of mid-IR phonon polaritonics in water.
Periodically poled thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) waveguides have emerged as a leading platform for highly efficient frequency conversion in the near-infrared. However, the commonly used silica bottom-cladding results in high absorption loss at wavelengths beyond 2.5 $mu$m. In this work, we demonstrate efficient frequency conversion in a TFLN-on-sapphire platform, which features high transparency up to 4.5 $mu$m. In particular, we report generating mid-infrared light up to 3.66 $mu$m via difference-frequency generation of a fixed 1-$mu$m source and a tunable telecom source, with normalized efficiencies up to 200%/W-cm$^2$. These results show TFLN-on-sapphire to be a promising platform for integrated nonlinear nanophotonics in the mid-infrared.

As a high-order quantum transition, two-photon emission has an extremely low occurrence rate compared to one-photon emission, thus having been considered a forbidden process. Here, we propose a scheme that allows ultrafast two-photon emission, leveraging highly confined surface plasmon polariton modes in a degenerately-doped, light-emitting semiconductor thin film. The surface plasmon polariton modes are tailored to have simultaneous spectral and spatial overlap with the two-photon emission in the semiconductor. Using degenerately-doped InSb as the prototype material, we show that the two-photon emission can be accelerated by 10 orders of magnitude: from tens of milliseconds to picoseconds, surpassing the one-photon emission rate. Our result provides a semiconductor platform for ultrafast single and entangled photon generation, with a tunable emission wavelength in the mid-infrared.
We demonstrate a multi-spectral polarization sensitive mid-infrared dots-in-a-well (DWELL) photodetector utilizing surface-plasmonic resonant elements, with tailorable frequency response and polarization selectivity. The resonant responsivity of the surface-plasmon detector shows an enhancement of up to 5 times that of an unpatterned control detector. As the plasmonic resonator involves only surface patterning of the top metal contact, this method is independent of light-absorbing material and can easily be integrated with current focal plane array processing for imaging applications.
The objective of this work is to study the role of shear on the rupture of ultrathin polymer films. To do so, a finite-difference numerical scheme for the resolution of the thin film equation was set up taking into account capillary and van der Waals (vdW) forces. This method was validated by comparing the dynamics obtained from an initial harmonic perturbation to established theoretical predictions. With the addition of shear, three regimes have then been evidenced as a function of the shear rate. In the case of low shear rates the rupture is delayed when compared to the no-shear problem, while at higher shear rates it is even suppressed: the perturbed interface goes back to its unperturbed state over time. In between these two limiting regimes, a transient one in which shear and vdW forces balance each other, leading to a non-monotonic temporal evolution of the perturbed interface, has been identified. While a linear analysis is sufficient to describe the rupture time in the absence of shear, the nonlinearities appear to be essential otherwise.
