We provide an analytical proof of universality for bound states in one-dimensional systems of two and three particles, valid for short-range interactions with negative or vanishing integral over space. The proof is performed in the limit of weak pair-interactions and covers both binding energies and wave functions. Moreover, in this limit the results are formally shown to converge to the respective ones found in the case of the zero-range contact interaction.
We study a heavy-heavy-light three-body system confined to one space dimension. Both binding energies and corresponding wave functions are obtained for (i) the zero-range, and (ii) two finite-range attractive heavy-light interaction potentials. In case of the zero-range potential, we apply the method of Skorniakov and Ter-Martirosian to explore the accuracy of the Born-Oppenheimer approach. For the finite-range potentials, we solve the Schrodinger equation numerically using a pseudospectral method. We demonstrate that when the two-body ground state energy approaches zero, the three-body bound states display a universal behavior, independent of the shape of the interaction potential.
We study a heavy-heavy-light three-body system confined to one space dimension provided the binding energy of an excited state in the heavy-light subsystems approaches zero. The associated two-body system is characterized by (i) the structure of the weakly-bound excited heavy-light state and (ii) the presence of deeply-bound heavy-light states. The consequences of these aspects for the behavior of the three-body system are analyzed. We find strong indication for universal behavior of both three-body binding energies and wave functions for different weakly-bound excited states in the heavy-light subsystems.
Many synthetic quantum systems allow particles to have dispersion relations that are neither linear nor quadratic functions. Here, we explore single-particle scattering in one dimension when the dispersion relation is $epsilon(k)=pm |d|k^m$, where $mgeq 2$ is an integer. We study impurity scattering problems in which a single-particle in a one-dimensional waveguide scatters off of an inhomogeneous, discrete set of sites locally coupled to the waveguide. For a large class of these problems, we rigorously prove that when there are no bright zero-energy eigenstates, the $S$-matrix evaluated at an energy $Eto 0$ converges to a universal limit that is only dependent on $m$. We also give a generalization of a key index theorem in quantum scattering theory known as Levinsons theorem -- which relates the scattering phases to the number of bound states -- to impurity scattering for these more general dispersion relations.
We investigate the formation of trimers in an infinite one-dimensional lattice model of hard-core particles with single-particle hopping $t$ and and nearest-neighbour two-body $U$ and three-body $V$ interactions of relevance to Rydberg atoms and polar molecules. For sufficiently attractive $Uleq-2t$ and positive $V>0$ a large trimer is stabilized, which persists as $Vrightarrow infty$, while both attractive $Uleq0$ and $Vleq0$ bind a small trimer. The excited state above this small trimer is also bound and has a large extent; its behavior as $Vrightarrow -infty$ resembles that of the large ground-state trimer. These large bound states appear to admit a continuum description. Furthermore, we find that in the limit $V>>t$, $U<-2t$ the bound-state behavior qualitatively evolves with larger $|U|$ from a state described by the scattering of three far separated particles to a state of a compact dimer scattering with a single particle.
We propose an entropic measure of non-classical correlations in general mixed states of fermion systems, based on the loss of information due to the unread measurement of the occupancy of single particle states of a given basis. When minimized over all possible single particle bases, the measure reduces to an entanglement entropy for pure states and vanishes only for states which are diagonal in a Slater determinant basis. The approach is also suitable for states having definite number parity yet not necessarily a fixed particle number, in which case the minimization can be extended to all bases related through a Bogoliubov transformation if quasiparticle mode measurements are also considered. General stationary conditions for determining the optimizing basis are derived. For a mixture of a general pure state with the maximally mixed state, a general analytic evaluation of the present measure and optimizing basis is provided, which shows that non-entangled mixed states may nonetheless exhibit a non-zero information loss.
