We introduce MemSum (Multi-step Episodic Markov decision process extractive SUMmarizer), a reinforcement-learning-based extractive summarizer enriched at any given time step with information on the current extraction history. Similar to previous models in this vein, MemSum iteratively selects sentences into the summary. Our innovation is in considering a broader information set when summarizing that would intuitively also be used by humans in this task: 1) the text content of the sentence, 2) the global text context of the rest of the document, and 3) the extraction history consisting of the set of sentences that have already been extracted. With a lightweight architecture, MemSum nonetheless obtains state-of-the-art test-set performance (ROUGE score) on long document datasets (PubMed, arXiv, and GovReport). Supporting analysis demonstrates that the added awareness of extraction history gives MemSum robustness against redundancy in the source document.

We study controllable text summarization which allows users to gain control on a particular attribute (e.g., length limit) of the generated summaries. In this work, we propose a novel training framework based on Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP), which conveniently includes a reward function along with a set of constraints, to facilitate better summarization control. The reward function encourages the generation to resemble the human-written reference, while the constraints are used to explicitly prevent the generated summaries from violating user-imposed requirements. Our framework can be applied to control important attributes of summarization, including length, covered entities, and abstractiveness, as we devise specific constraints for each of these aspects. Extensive experiments on popular benchmarks show that our CMDP framework helps generate informative summaries while complying with a given attributes requirement.
Most prior work in the sequence-to-sequence paradigm focused on datasets with input sequence lengths in the hundreds of tokens due to the computational constraints of common RNN and Transformer architectures. In this paper, we study long-form abstractive text summarization, a sequence-to-sequence setting with input sequence lengths up to 100,000 tokens and output sequence lengths up to 768 tokens. We propose SEAL, a Transformer-based model, featuring a new encoder-decoder attention that dynamically extracts/selects input snippets to sparsely attend to for each output segment. Using only the original documents and summaries, we derive proxy labels that provide weak supervision for extractive layers simultaneously with regular supervision from abstractive summaries. The SEAL model achieves state-of-the-art results on existing long-form summarization tasks, and outperforms strong baseline models on a new dataset/task we introduce, Search2Wiki, with much longer input text. Since content selection is explicit in the SEAL model, a desirable side effect is that the selection can be inspected for enhanced interpretability.
Recent researches have demonstrated that BERT shows potential in a wide range of natural language processing tasks. It is adopted as an encoder for many state-of-the-art automatic summarizing systems, which achieve excellent performance. However, so far, there is not much work done for Vietnamese. In this paper, we showcase how BERT can be implemented for extractive text summarization in Vietnamese. We introduce a novel comparison between different multilingual and monolingual BERT models. The experiment results indicate that monolingual models produce promising results compared to other multilingual models and previous text summarizing models for Vietnamese.

We consider the problem of constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP) where an agent interacts with a unichain Markov Decision Process. At every interaction, the agent obtains a reward. Further, there are $K$ cost functions. The agent aims to maximize the long-term average reward while simultaneously keeping the $K$ long-term average costs lower than a certain threshold. In this paper, we propose CMDP-PSRL, a posterior sampling based algorithm using which the agent can learn optimal policies to interact with the CMDP. Further, for MDP with $S$ states, $A$ actions, and diameter $D$, we prove that following CMDP-PSRL algorithm, the agent can bound the regret of not accumulating rewards from optimal policy by $Tilde{O}(poly(DSA)sqrt{T})$. Further, we show that the violations for any of the $K$ constraints is also bounded by $Tilde{O}(poly(DSA)sqrt{T})$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work which obtains a $Tilde{O}(sqrt{T})$ regret bounds for ergodic MDPs with long-term average constraints.
Current abstractive summarization systems outperform their extractive counterparts, but their widespread adoption is inhibited by the inherent lack of interpretability. To achieve the best of both worlds, we propose EASE, an extractive-abstractive framework for evidence-based text generation and apply it to document summarization. We present an explainable summarization system based on the Information Bottleneck principle that is jointly trained for extraction and abstraction in an end-to-end fashion. Inspired by previous research that humans use a two-stage framework to summarize long documents (Jing and McKeown, 2000), our framework first extracts a pre-defined amount of evidence spans as explanations and then generates a summary using only the evidence. Using automatic and human evaluations, we show that explanations from our framework are more relevant than simple baselines, without substantially sacrificing the quality of the generated summary.
