Recognizing the patients emotions using deep learning techniques has attracted significant attention recently due to technological advancements. Automatically identifying the emotions can help build smart healthcare centers that can detect depression and stress among the patients in order to start the medication early. Using advanced technology to identify emotions is one of the most exciting topics as it defines the relationships between humans and machines. Machines learned how to predict emotions by adopting various methods. In this survey, we present recent research in the field of using neural networks to recognize emotions. We focus on studying emotions recognition from speech, facial expressions, and audio-visual input and show the different techniques of deploying these algorithms in the real world. These three emotion recognition techniques can be used as a surveillance system in healthcare centers to monitor patients. We conclude the survey with a presentation of the challenges and the related future work to provide an insight into the applications of using emotion recognition.

Many paralinguistic tasks are closely related and thus representations learned in one domain can be leveraged for another. In this paper, we investigate how knowledge can be transferred between three paralinguistic tasks: speaker, emotion, and gender recognition. Further, we extend this problem to cross-dataset tasks, asking how knowledge captured in one emotion dataset can be transferred to another. We focus on progressive neural networks and compare these networks to the conventional deep learning method of pre-training and fine-tuning. Progressive neural networks provide a way to transfer knowledge and avoid the forgetting effect present when pre-training neural networks on different tasks. Our experiments demonstrate that: (1) emotion recognition can benefit from using representations originally learned for different paralinguistic tasks and (2) transfer learning can effectively leverage additional datasets to improve the performance of emotion recognition systems.

Anomalous activity recognition deals with identifying the patterns and events that vary from the normal stream. In a surveillance paradigm, these events range from abuse to fighting and road accidents to snatching, etc. Due to the sparse occurrence of anomalous events, anomalous activity recognition from surveillance videos is a challenging research task. The approaches reported can be generally categorized as handcrafted and deep learning-based. Most of the reported studies address binary classification i.e. anomaly detection from surveillance videos. But these reported approaches did not address other anomalous events e.g. abuse, fight, road accidents, shooting, stealing, vandalism, and robbery, etc. from surveillance videos. Therefore, this paper aims to provide an effective framework for the recognition of different real-world anomalies from videos. This study provides a simple, yet effective approach for learning spatiotemporal features using deep 3-dimensional convolutional networks (3D ConvNets) trained on the University of Central Florida (UCF) Crime video dataset. Firstly, the frame-level labels of the UCF Crime dataset are provided, and then to extract anomalous spatiotemporal features more efficiently a fine-tuned 3D ConvNets is proposed. Findings of the proposed study are twofold 1)There exist specific, detectable, and quantifiable features in UCF Crime video feed that associate with each other 2) Multiclass learning can improve generalizing competencies of the 3D ConvNets by effectively learning frame-level information of dataset and can be leveraged in terms of better results by applying spatial augmentation.

Deep neural networks are the state-of-the-art methods for many real-world tasks, such as computer vision, natural language processing and speech recognition. For all its popularity, deep neural networks are also criticized for consuming a lot of memory and draining battery life of devices during training and inference. This makes it hard to deploy these models on mobile or embedded devices which have tight resource constraints. Quantization is recognized as one of the most effective approaches to satisfy the extreme memory requirements that deep neural network models demand. Instead of adopting 32-bit floating point format to represent weights, quantized representations store weights using more compact formats such as integers or even binary numbers. Despite a possible degradation in predictive performance, quantization provides a potential solution to greatly reduce the model size and the energy consumption. In this survey, we give a thorough review of different aspects of quantized neural networks. Current challenges and trends of quantized neural networks are also discussed.
Many mobile applications and virtual conversational agents now aim to recognize and adapt to emotions. To enable this, data are transmitted from users devices and stored on central servers. Yet, these data contain sensitive information that could be used by mobile applications without users consent or, maliciously, by an eavesdropping adversary. In this work, we show how multimodal representations trained for a primary task, here emotion recognition, can unintentionally leak demographic information, which could override a selected opt-out option by the user. We analyze how this leakage differs in representations obtained from textual, acoustic, and multimodal data. We use an adversarial learning paradigm to unlearn the private information present in a representation and investigate the effect of varying the strength of the adversarial component on the primary task and on the privacy metric, defined here as the inability of an attacker to predict specific demographic information. We evaluate this paradigm on multiple datasets and show that we can improve the privacy metric while not significantly impacting the performance on the primary task. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to analyze how the privacy metric differs across modalities and how multiple privacy concerns can be tackled while still maintaining performance on emotion recognition.
The rapid increase in the percentage of chronic disease patients along with the recent pandemic pose immediate threats on healthcare expenditure and elevate causes of death. This calls for transforming healthcare systems away from one-on-one patient treatment into intelligent health systems, to improve services, access and scalability, while reducing costs. Reinforcement Learning (RL) has witnessed an intrinsic breakthrough in solving a variety of complex problems for diverse applications and services. Thus, we conduct in this paper a comprehensive survey of the recent models and techniques of RL that have been developed/used for supporting Intelligent-healthcare (I-health) systems. This paper can guide the readers to deeply understand the state-of-the-art regarding the use of RL in the context of I-health. Specifically, we first present an overview for the I-health systems challenges, architecture, and how RL can benefit these systems. We then review the background and mathematical modeling of different RL, Deep RL (DRL), and multi-agent RL models. After that, we provide a deep literature review for the applications of RL in I-health systems. In particular, three main areas have been tackled, i.e., edge intelligence, smart core network, and dynamic treatment regimes. Finally, we highlight emerging challenges and outline future research directions in driving the future success of RL in I-health systems, which opens the door for exploring some interesting and unsolved problems.
