The transition to a low-carbon economy is one of the ambitions of the European Union for 2030. Biobased industries play an essential role in this transition. However, there has been an on-going discussion about the actual benefit of using biomass to produce biobased products, specifically the use of agricultural materials (e.g., corn and sugarcane). This paper presents the environmental impact assessment of 30% and 100% biobased PET (polyethylene terephthalate) production using EU biomass supply chains (e.g., sugar beet, wheat, and Miscanthus). An integral assessment between the life cycle assessment methodology and the global sensitivity assessment is presented as an early-stage support tool to propose and select supply chains that improve the environmental performance of biobased PET production. From the results, Miscanthus is the best option for the production of biobased PET: promoting EU local supply chains, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (process and land-use change), and generating lower impacts in midpoint categories related to resource depletion, ecosystem quality, and human health. This tool can help improving the environmental performance of processes that could boost the shift to a low-carbon economy.

The industrial life cycle theory has proved to be helpful for describing the evolution of industries from birth to maturity. This paper is to highlight the historical evolution stage of Atlantic Citys gambling industry in a structural framework covered by industrial market, industrial organization, industrial policies and innovation. Data mining was employed to obtain from local official documents, to verify the module of industrial life cycle in differential phases as introduction, development, maturity and decline. The trajectory of Atlantic Citys gambling sector evolution reveals the process from the stages of introduction to decline via a set of variables describing structural properties of this industry such as product, market and organization of industry under a special industry environment in which industry recession as a result of theory of industry life cycle is a particular evidence be proved again. Innovation of the gambling industry presents the ongoing recovering process of the Atlantic City gambling industry enriches the theory of industrial life cycle in service sectors.
The long-lasting socio-economic impact of the global financial crisis has questioned the adequacy of traditional tools in explaining periods of financial distress, as well as the adequacy of the existing policy response. In particular, the effect of complex interconnections among financial institutions on financial stability has been widely recognized. A recent debate focused on the effects of unconventional policies aimed at achieving both price and financial stability. In particular, Quantitative Easing (QE, i.e., the large-scale asset purchase programme conducted by a central bank upon the creation of new money) has been recently implemented by the European Central Bank (ECB). In this context, two questions deserve more attention in the literature. First, to what extent, by injecting liquidity, the QE may alter the bank-firm lending level and stimulate the real economy. Second, to what extent the QE may also alter the pattern of intra-financial exposures among financial actors (including banks, investment funds, insurance corporations, and pension funds) and what are the implications in terms of financial stability. Here, we address these two questions by developing a methodology to map the macro-network of financial exposures among institutional sectors across financial instruments (e.g., equity, bonds, and loans) and we illustrate our approach on recently available data (i.e., data on loans and private and public securities purchased within the QE). We then test the effect of the implementation of ECBs QE on the time evolution of the financial linkages in the macro-network of the euro area, as well as the effect on macroeconomic variables, such as output and prices.
This paper studies reputation in the online market for illegal drugs in which no legal institutions exist to alleviate uncertainty. Trade takes place on platforms that offer rating systems for sellers, thereby providing an observable measure of reputation. The analysis exploits the fact that one of the two dominant platforms unexpectedly disappeared. Re-entering sellers reset their rating. The results show that on average prices decreased by up to 9% and that a 1% increase in rating causes a price increase of 1%. Ratings and prices recover after about three months. We calculate that identified good types earn 1,650 USD more per week.

Bitcoin as well as other cryptocurrencies are all plagued by the impact from bifurcation. Since the marginal cost of bifurcation is theoretically zero, it causes the coin holders to doubt on the existence of the coins intrinsic value. This paper suggests a normative dual-value theory to assess the fundamental value of Bitcoin. We draw on the experience from the art market, where similar replication problems are prevalent. The idea is to decompose the total value of a cryptocurrency into two parts: one is its art value and the other is its use value. The tradeoff between these two values is also analyzed, which enlightens our proposal of an image coin for Bitcoin so as to elevate its use value without sacrificing its art value. To show the general validity of the dual-value theory, we also apply it to evaluate the prospects of four major cryptocurrencies. We find this framework is helpful for both the investors and the exchanges to examine a new coins value when it first appears in the market.

In 1974, Robert Caro published The Power Broker, a critical biography of Robert Mosess dictatorial tenure as the master builder of mid-century New York. Moses profoundly transformed New Yorks urban fabric and transportation system, producing the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, the Westside Highway, the Cross-Bronx Expressway, the Lincoln Center, the UN headquarters, Shea Stadium, Jones Beach State Park and many other projects. However, The Power Broker did lasting damage to his public image and today he remains one of the most controversial figures in city planning history. On August 26, 1974, Moses issued a turgid 23-page statement denouncing Caros work as full of mistakes, unsupported charges, nasty baseless personalities, and random haymakers. Mosess original typewritten statement survives today as a grainy photocopy in the New York City Parks Department archive. To better preserve and disseminate it, I have extracted and transcribed its text using optical character recognition and edited the result to correct errors. Here I compile my transcription of Mosess statement, alongside Caros reply to it.
