The ferromagnetic (FM) nature of the metallic LaCo$_2$P$_2$ was investigated with the positive muon spin rotation, relaxation and resonance ($mu^+$SR) technique. Transverse and zero field $mu^+$SR measurements revealed that the compound enters a long range FM ground state at $T_{rm C}=130.91(65)$~K, consistent with previous studies. Based on the reported FM structure, the internal magnetic field was computed at the muon sites, which were predicted with first principles calculations. The computed result agree well with the experimental data. Moreover, although LaCo$_2$P$_2$ is a paramagnet at higher temperatures $T>160$~K, it enters a short range ordered (SRO) magnetic phase for $T_{rm C}<Tleq160$~K. Measurements below the vicinity of $T_{rm C}$ revealed that the SRO phase co-exists with the long range FM order at temperatures $124leq Tleq T_{rm C}$. Such co-existence is an intrinsic property and stems from competition between the 2D and 3D interactions/fluctuations.

The magnetic properties of the layered oxypnictide LaMnAsO have been revisited using neutron scattering and magnetization measurements. The present measurements identify the N{e}el temperature $T_N$ = 360(1) K. Below $T_N$ the critical exponent describing the magnetic order parameter is $beta$ = 0.33$-$0.35, consistent with a three dimensional Heisenberg model. Above this temperature, diffuse magnetic scattering indicative of short-range magnetic order is observed, and this scattering persists up to $T_{SRO}$ = 650(10) K. The magnetic susceptibility shows a weak anomaly at $T_{SRO}$ and no anomaly at $T_N$. Analysis of the diffuse scattering data using a reverse Monte Carlo algorithm indicates that above $T_N$ nearly two- dimensional, short-range magnetic order is present with a correlation length of 9.3(3) {AA} within the Mn layers at 400 K. The inelastic scattering data reveal a spin-gap of 3.5 meV in the long-range ordered state, and strong, low-energy (quasi-elastic) magnetic excitations emerging in the short-range ordered state. Comparison with other related compounds correlates the distortion of the Mn coordination tetrahedra to the sign of the magnetic exchange along the layer-stacking direction, and suggests that short-range order above $T_N$ is a common feature in the magnetic behavior of layered Mn-based pnictides and oxypnictides.
In this study, we performed powder neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering measurements of frustrated pyrochlore Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which exhibits a metal-insulator transition at a temperature $T_{rm MI}$ of 33 K. The diffraction measurements revealed that the pyrochlore has an antiferromagnetic long-range structure with propagation vector $vec{q}_{0}$ of (0,0,0) and that it grows with decreasing temperature below 15 K. This structure was analyzed to be of the all-in all-out type, consisting of highly anisotropic Nd$^{3+}$ magnetic moments of magnitude $2.3pm0.4$$mu_{rm B}$, where $mu_{rm B}$ is the Bohr magneton. The inelastic scattering measurements revealed that the Kramers ground doublet of Nd$^{3+}$ splits below $T_{rm MI}$. This suggests the appearance of a static internal magnetic field at the Nd sites, which probably originates from a magnetic order consisting of Ir$^{4+}$ magnetic moments. Here, we discuss a magnetic structure model for the Ir order and the relation of the order to the metal-insulator transition in terms of frustration.

Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ remains a puzzling case among the extensively studied frustrated compounds of the rare-earth pyrochlore family. Indeed, while a first order transition towards a long-range antiferromagnetic state with the so-called Palmer-Chalker structure is theoretically predicted, it has not been observed yet, leaving the issue, as to whether it is a spin-liquid candidate, open. We report on neutron scattering and magnetization measurements which evidence a second order transition towards this Palmer-Chalker ordered state around 108 mK. Extreme care was taken to ensure a proper thermalization of the sample, which has proved to be crucial to successfully observe the magnetic Bragg peaks. At the transition, a gap opens in the excitations, superimposed on a strong quasielastic signal. The exchange parameters, refined from a spin wave analysis in applied magnetic field, confirm that Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ is a realization of the dipolar XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet. The proximity of competing phases and the strong XY anisotropy of the Er$^{3+}$ magnetic moment might be at the origin of enhanced fluctuations, leading to the unexpected nature of the transition, the low ordering temperature, and the observed multi-scale dynamics.
We present observations of highly frustrated quasi two-dimensional (2D) magnetic correlations in the honeycomb lattice layers of the S$_{eff}$ = 1/2 compound $gamma$-BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ ($gamma$-BCPO). Specific heat shows a broad peak comprised of two weak kink features at $T_{N1} sim$ 6 K and $T_{N2} sim$ 3.5 K, the relative weights of which can be modified by sample annealing. Neutron powder diffraction measurements reveal short range quasi-2D order that is established below $T_{N1}$ and $T_{N2}$, at which two separate, incompatible, short range magnetic orders onset: commensurate antiferromagnetic correlations with correlation length $xi_c = 60pm2$ AA ($T_{N1}$) and in quasi-2D helical domains with $xi_h = 350 pm 11$ AA ($T_{N2}$). The ac magnetic susceptibility response lacks frequency dependence, ruling out spin freezing. Inelastic neutron scattering data on $gamma$-BCPO is compared with linear spin wave theory, and two separate parameter regions of the XXZ $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ model with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange $J_1$ are favored, both near regions of high classical degeneracy. High energy coherent excitations ($sim 10$ meV) persist up to at least 40 K, suggesting strong in-plane correlations persist above $T_N$. These data show that $gamma$-BCPO is a rare highly frustrated, quasi-2D S$_{eff}$ = 1/2 honeycomb lattice material which resists long range magnetic order and spin freezing.
In order to study the phase diagram from a microscopic viewpoint, we have measured wTF- and ZF-$mu^+$SR spectra for the Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$ powder samples with $x=0$, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, and 1. Due to a characteristic time window and spatial resolution of $mu^+$SR, the obtained phase diagram was found to be rather different from that determined by magnetization measurements. That is, as $x$ increases from 0, a Pauli-paramagnetic phase is observed even at the lowest $T$ measured (1.8~K) until $x=0.4$, then, a spin-glass like phase appears at $0.5leq xleq0.6$, and then, a phase with wide field distribution probably due to incommensurate AF order is detected for $x=0.8$, and finally, a commensurate $A$-type AF ordered phase (for $x=1$) is stabilized below $T_{rm N}sim80~$K. Such change is most likely reasonable and connected to the shrink of the $c$-axis length with $x$, which naturally enhances the magnetic interaction between the two adjacent Co planes.
