Mobile robots have become more and more popular in our daily life. In large-scale and crowded environments, how to navigate safely with localization precision is a critical problem. To solve this problem, we proposed a curiosity-based framework that can find an effective path with the consideration of human comfort, localization uncertainty, crowds, and the cost-to-go to the target. Three parts are involved in the proposed framework: the distance assessment module, the curiosity gain of the information-rich area, and the curiosity negative gain of crowded areas. The curiosity gain of the information-rich area was proposed to provoke the robot to approach localization referenced landmarks. To guarantee human comfort while coexisting with robots, we propose curiosity gain of the spacious area to bypass the crowd and maintain an appropriate distance between robots and humans. The evaluation is conducted in an unstructured environment. The results show that our method can find a feasible path, which can consider the localization uncertainty while simultaneously avoiding the crowded area. We focus on the problem of planning the motion of a robot in a dynamic multiagent environment such as a pedestrian scene. Enabling the robot to navigate safely and in a socially compliant fashion in such scenes requires a representation that accounts for the unfolding multiagent dynamics. Existing approaches to this problem tend to employ microscopic models of motion prediction that reason about the individual behavior of other agents. While such models may achieve high tracking accuracy in trajectory prediction benchmarks, they often lack an understanding of the group structures unfolding in crowded scenes. Inspired by the Gestalt theory from psychology, we build a Model Predictive Control framework (G-MPC) that leverages group-based prediction for robot motion planning. We conduct an extensive simulation study involving a series of challenging navigation tasks in scenes extracted from two real-world pedestrian datasets. We illustrate that G-MPC enables a robot to achieve statistically significantly higher safety and lower number of group intrusions than a series of baselines featuring individual pedestrian motion prediction models. Finally, we show that G-MPC can handle noisy lidar-scan estimates without significant performance losses.
As drones and autonomous cars become more widespread it is becoming increasingly important that robots can operate safely under realistic conditions. The noisy information fed into real systems means that robots must use estimates of the environment to plan navigation. Efficiently guaranteeing that the resulting motion plans are safe under these circumstances has proved difficult. We examine how to guarantee that a trajectory or policy is safe with only imperfect observations of the environment. We examine the implications of various mathematical formalisms of safety and arrive at a mathematical notion of safety of a long-term execution, even when conditioned on observational information. We present efficient algorithms that can prove that trajectories or policies are safe with much tighter bounds than in previous work. Notably, the complexity of the environment does not affect our methods ability to evaluate if a trajectory or policy is safe. We then use these safety checking methods to design a safe variant of the RRT planning algorithm.
We present CoMet, a novel approach for computing a groups cohesion and using that to improve a robots navigation in crowded scenes. Our approach uses a novel cohesion-metric that builds on prior work in social psychology. We compute this metric by utilizing various visual features of pedestrians from an RGB-D camera on-board a robot. Specifically, we detect characteristics corresponding to proximity between people, their relative walking speeds, the group size, and interactions between group members. We use our cohesion-metric to design and improve a navigation scheme that accounts for different levels of group cohesion while a robot moves through a crowd. We evaluate the precision and recall of our cohesion-metric based on perceptual evaluations. We highlight the performance of our social navigation algorithm on a Turtlebot robot and demonstrate its benefits in terms of multiple metrics: freezing rate (57% decrease), deviation (35.7% decrease), and path length of the trajectory(23.2% decrease).
Robots are increasingly operating in indoor environments designed for and shared with people. However, robots working safely and autonomously in uneven and unstructured environments still face great challenges. Many modern indoor environments are designed with wheelchair accessibility in mind. This presents an opportunity for wheeled robots to navigate through sloped areas while avoiding staircases. In this paper, we present an integrated software and hardware system for autonomous mobile robot navigation in uneven and unstructured indoor environments. This modular and reusable software framework incorporates capabilities of perception and navigation. Our robot first builds a 3D OctoMap representation for the uneven environment with the 3D mapping using wheel odometry, 2D laser and RGB-D data. Then we project multilayer 2D occupancy maps from OctoMap to generate the the traversable map based on layer differences. The safe traversable map serves as the input for efficient autonomous navigation. Furthermore, we employ a variable step size Rapidly Exploring Random Trees that could adjust the step size automatically, eliminating tuning step sizes according to environments. We conduct extensive experiments in simulation and real-world, demonstrating the efficacy and efficiency of our system.
Robot navigation in a safe way for complex and crowded situations is studied in this work. When facing complex environments with both static and dynamic obstacles, in existing works unicycle nonholonomic robots are prone to two extreme behaviors, one is to fall into dead ends formed by obstacles, and the other is to not complete the navigation task in time due to excessive collision avoidance.As a result, we propose the R-SARL framework, which is based on a deep reinforcement learning algorithm and where we augment the reward function to avoid collisions. In particular, we estimate unsafe interactions between the robot and obstacles in a look-ahead distance and penalize accordingly, so that the robot can avoid collisions in advance and reach its destination safely.Furthermore, we penalize frequent excessive detours to reduce the timeout and thus improve the efficiency of navigation.We test our method in various challenging and complex crowd navigation tasks. The results show that our method improves navigation performance and outperforms state-of-the-art methods.
