Continuous-variable quantum information processing through quantum optics offers a promising platform for building the next generation of scalable fault-tolerant information processors. To achieve quantum computational advantages and fault tolerance, non-Gaussian resources are essential. In this work, we propose and analyze a method to generate a variety of non-Gaussian states using coherent photon subtraction from a two-mode squeezed state followed by photon-number-resolving measurements. The proposed method offers a promising way to generate rotation-symmetric states conventionally used for quantum error correction with binomial codes and truncated Schr{o}dinger cat codes. We consider the deleterious effects of experimental imperfections such as detection inefficiencies and losses in the state engineering protocol. Our method can be readily implemented with current quantum photonic technologies.

Bosonic rotation codes, introduced here, are a broad class of bosonic error-correcting codes based on phase-space rotation symmetry. We present a universal quantum computing scheme applicable to a subset of this class--number-phase codes--which includes the well-known cat and binomial codes, among many others. The entangling gate in our scheme is code-agnostic and can be used to interface different rotation-symmetric encodings. In addition to a universal set of operations, we propose a teleportation-based error correction scheme that allows recoveries to be tracked entirely in software. Focusing on cat and binomial codes as examples, we compute average gate fidelities for error correction under simultaneous loss and dephasing noise and show numerically that the error-correction scheme is close to optimal for error-free ancillae and ideal measurements. Finally, we present a scheme for fault-tolerant, universal quantum computing based on concatenation of number-phase codes and Bacon-Shor subsystem codes.
Quantum state tomography (QST) is a crucial ingredient for almost all aspects of experimental quantum information processing. As an analog of the imaging technique in the quantum settings, QST is born to be a data science problem, where machine learning techniques, noticeably neural networks, have been applied extensively. In this work, we build an integrated all-optical setup for neural network QST, based on an all-optical neural network (AONN). Our AONN is equipped with built-in nonlinear activation function, which is based on electromagnetically induced transparency. Experiment results demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the all-optical setup, indicating that AONN can mitigate the state-preparation-and-measurement error and predict the phase parameter in the quantum state accurately. Given that optical setups are highly desired for future quantum networks, our all-optical setup of integrated AONN-QST may shed light on replenishing the all-optical quantum network with the last brick.
We propose two experimental schemes for producing coherent-state superpositions which approximate different nonclassical states conditionally in traveling optical fields. Although these setups are constructed of a small number of linear optical elements and homodyne measurements, they can be used to generate various photon number superpositions in which the number of constituent states can be higher than the number of measurements in the schemes. We determine numerically the parameters to achieve maximal fidelity of the preparation for a large variety of nonclassical states, such as amplitude squeezed states, squeezed number states, binomial states and various photon number superpositions. The proposed setups can generate these states with high fidelities and with success probabilities that can be promising for practical applications.
Quantum state exchange is a quantum communication task for two users in which the users faithfully exchange their respective parts of an initial state under the asymptotic scenario. In this work, we generalize the quantum state exchange task to a quantum communication task for $M$ users in which the users circularly transfer their respective parts of an initial state. We assume that every pair of users may share entanglement resources, and they use local operations and classical communication in order to perform the task. We call this generalized task the (asymptotic) quantum state rotation. First of all, we formally define the quantum state rotation task and its optimal entanglement cost, which means the least amount of total entanglement required to carry out the task. We then present lower and upper bounds on the optimal entanglement cost, and provide conditions for zero optimal entanglement cost. Based on these results, we find out a difference between the quantum state rotation task for three or more users and the quantum state exchange task.
We propose a general experimental quantum state engineering scheme for the high-fidelity conditional generation of a large variety of nonclassical states of traveling optical fields. It contains a single measurement, thereby achieving a high success probability. The generated state is encoded in the optimal choice of the physically controllable parameters of the arrangement. These parameter values are determined via numerical optimization.
