Extensive research on target-dependent sentiment classification (TSC) has led to strong classification performances in domains where authors tend to explicitly express sentiment about specific entities or topics, such as in reviews or on social media. We investigate TSC in news articles, a much less researched domain, despite the importance of news as an essential information source in individual and societal decision making. This article introduces NewsTSC, a manually annotated dataset to explore TSC on news articles. Investigating characteristics of sentiment in news and contrasting them to popular TSC domains, we find that sentiment in the news is expressed less explicitly, is more dependent on context and readership, and requires a greater degree of interpretation. In an extensive evaluation, we find that the state of the art in TSC performs worse on news articles than on other domains (average recall AvgRec = 69.8 on NewsTSC compared to AvgRev = [75.6, 82.2] on established TSC datasets). Reasons include incorrectly resolved relation of target and sentiment-bearing phrases and off-context dependence. As a major improvement over previous news TSC, we find that BERTs natural language understanding capabilities capture the less explicit sentiment used in news articles.

Online users today are exposed to misleading and propagandistic news articles and media posts on a daily basis. To counter thus, a number of approaches have been designed aiming to achieve a healthier and safer online news and media consumption. Automatic systems are able to support humans in detecting such content; yet, a major impediment to their broad adoption is that besides being accurate, the decisions of such systems need also to be interpretable in order to be trusted and widely adopted by users. Since misleading and propagandistic content influences readers through the use of a number of deception techniques, we propose to detect and to show the use of such techniques as a way to offer interpretability. In particular, we define qualitatively descriptive features and we analyze their suitability for detecting deception techniques. We further show that our interpretable features can be easily combined with pre-trained language models, yielding state-of-the-art results.
Detecting and aggregating sentiments toward people, organizations, and events expressed in unstructured social media have become critical text mining operations. Early systems detected sentiments over whole passages, whereas more recently, target-specific sentiments have been of greater interest. In this paper, we present MTTDSC, a multi-task target-dependent sentiment classification system that is informed by feature representation learnt for the related auxiliary task of passage-level sentiment classification. The auxiliary task uses a gated recurrent unit (GRU) and pools GRU states, followed by an auxiliary fully-connected layer that outputs passage-level predictions. In the main task, these GRUs contribute auxiliary per-token representations over and above word embeddings. The main task has its own, separate GRUs. The auxiliary and main GRUs send their states to a different fully connected layer, trained for the main task. Extensive experiments using two auxiliary datasets and three benchmark datasets (of which one is new, introduced by us) for the main task demonstrate that MTTDSC outperforms state-of-the-art baselines. Using word-level sensitivity analysis, we present anecdotal evidence that prior systems can make incorrect target-specific predictions because they miss sentiments expressed by words independent of target.
Automatically mining sentiment tendency contained in natural language is a fundamental research to some artificial intelligent applications, where solutions alternate with challenges. Transfer learning and multi-task learning techniques have been leveraged to mitigate the supervision sparsity and collaborate multiple heterogeneous domains correspondingly. Recent years, the sensitive nature of users private data raises another challenge for sentiment classification, i.e., data privacy protection. In this paper, we resort to federated learning for multiple domain sentiment classification under the constraint that the corpora must be stored on decentralized devices. In view of the heterogeneous semantics across multiple parties and the peculiarities of word embedding, we pertinently provide corresponding solutions. First, we propose a Knowledge Transfer Enhanced Private-Shared (KTEPS) framework for better model aggregation and personalization in federated sentiment classification. Second, we propose KTEPS$^star$ with the consideration of the rich semantic and huge embedding size properties of word vectors, utilizing Projection-based Dimension Reduction (PDR) methods for privacy protection and efficient transmission simultaneously. We propose two federated sentiment classification scenes based on public benchmarks, and verify the superiorities of our proposed methods with abundant experimental investigations.

Multimodal target/aspect sentiment classification combines multimodal sentiment analysis and aspect/target sentiment classification. The goal of the task is to combine vision and language to understand the sentiment towards a target entity in a sentence. Twitter is an ideal setting for the task because it is inherently multimodal, highly emotional, and affects real world events. However, multimodal tweets are short and accompanied by complex, possibly irrelevant images. We introduce a two-stream model that translates images in input space using an object-aware transformer followed by a single-pass non-autoregressive text generation approach. We then leverage the translation to construct an auxiliary sentence that provides multimodal information to a language model. Our approach increases the amount of text available to the language model and distills the object-level information in complex images. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on two multimodal Twitter datasets without modifying the internals of the language model to accept multimodal data, demonstrating the effectiveness of our translation. In addition, we explain a failure mode of a popular approach for aspect sentiment analysis when applied to tweets. Framing a news article means to portray the reported event from a specific perspective, e.g., from an economic or a health perspective. Reframing means to change this perspective. Depending on the audience or the submessage, reframing can become necessary to achieve the desired effect on the readers. Reframing is related to adapting style and sentiment, which can be tackled with neural text generation techniques. However, it is more challenging since changing a frame requires rewriting entire sentences rather than single phrases. In this paper, we study how to computationally reframe sentences in news articles while maintaining their coherence to the context. We treat reframing as a sentence-level fill-in-the-blank task for which we train neural models on an existing media frame corpus. To guide the training, we propose three strategies: framed-language pretraining, named-entity preservation, and adversarial learning. We evaluate respective models automatically and manually for topic consistency, coherence, and successful reframing. Our results indicate that generating properly-framed text works well but with tradeoffs.
