For high-density metro traffic, nowadays the time-variant passenger flow is the main cause of train delays and stranded passengers. Typically, the main objective of automatic metro traffic regulation methods is to minimize the delay time of trains while passengers satisfaction is not considered. Instead, in this work, a novel framework that integrates a passenger flow module (PFM) and a train operation module (TOM) is proposed with the aim of simultaneously minimizing traffic delays and passengers discomfort. In particular, the PFM is devoted to the optimization of the headway time in case of platform overcrowding, so as to reduce the passengers waiting time at platforms and increase the load rate of trains; while the TOM is devoted to the minimization of trains delays. The two modules interact with each other so that the headway time is automatically adjusted when a platform is overcrowded, and the train traffic is immediately regulated according to the new headway time. As a result, the number of passengers on the platform and their total waiting time can be significantly reduced. Numerical results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving the operation performance while minimizing the passengers discomfort.

Traffic Management in Advanced Aerial Mobility (AAM) inherits many elements of conventional Air Traffic Management (ATM), but brings new complexities and challenges of its own. One of its ways of guaranteeing separation is the use of airborne, stand-alone Detect-And-Avoid, an operational concept where each aircraft decides its avoidance maneuvers independently, observing right-of-way rules and, in specific implementations, some form of pairwise coordination. This is a fundamental safety element for autonomous aircraft but, according to our research, is not sufficient for high-density airspaces as envisioned for urban environments. In these environments, some way of explicit and strategic traffic coordination must be in place, as done for conventional ATM. For efficiency reasons, ATM is evolving to more flexible uses of the airspace, such that the use of dynamically allocated corridors is a rising concept for AAM. These strategic forms of traffic coordination are potentially highly efficient if the aircraft adhere to their trajectory contracts and there are no significant perturbations to the traffic. However, if significant perturbations occur, such as loss of data communication, or the sudden appearance of an intruder, a centralized system may not react appropriately in due time. In busy scenarios, even small deviations from plans may compound so rapidly as to result in large differences in the overall achieved scenario, resulting in congestions and convoluted conflicts. Therefore, it is worth studying traffic coordination techniques that work locally with shorter look-ahead times. To that end, we explore an airborne collaborative method for traffic coordination, which is capable of safely solving conflicts with multiple aircraft, stressing its capabilities throughout a large number of scenarios and comparing its performance with established methods.
This paper proposes a control method for allowing aggregates of thermostatically controlled loads to provide synthetic inertia and primary frequency regulation services to the grid. The proposed control framework is fully distributed and basically consists in the modification of the thermostat logic as a function of the grid frequency. Three strategies are considered: in the first one, the load aggregate provides synthetic inertia by varying its active power demand proportionally to the frequency rate of change; in the second one, the load aggregate provides primary frequency regulation by varying its power demand proportionally to frequency; in the third one, the two services are combined. The performances of the proposed control solutions are analyzed in the forecasted scenario of the electric power system of Sardinia in 2030, characterized by a huge installation of wind and photovoltaic generation and no coil and combustible oil power plants. The considered load aggregate is composed by domestic refrigerators and water heaters. Results prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach and show that, in the particular case of refrigerators and water heaters, the contribution to the frequency regulation is more significant in the case of positive frequency variations. Finally, the correlation between the regulation performances and the level of penetration of the load aggregate with respect to the system total load is evaluated.
This paper proposes a cyber-physical cooperative mitigation framework to enhance power systems resilience under extreme events, e.g., earthquakes and hurricanes. Extreme events can simultaneously damage the physical-layer electric power infrastructure and the cyber-layer communication facilities. Microgrid (MG) has been widely recognised as an effective physical-layer response to such events, however, the mitigation strategy in the cyber lay is yet to be fully investigated. Therefore, this paper proposes a resilience-oriented centralised-to-decentralised framework to maintain the power supply of critical loads such as hospitals, data centers, etc., under extreme events. For the resilient control, controller-to-controller (C2C) wireless network is utilised to form the emergency regional communication when centralised base station being compromised. Owing to the limited reliable bandwidth that reserved as a backup, the inevitable delays are dynamically minimised and used to guide the design of a discrete-time distributed control algorithm to maintain post-event power supply. The effectiveness of the cooperative cyber-physical mitigation framework is demonstrated through extensive simulations in MATLAB/Simulink.

In preparing for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), a worrisome aspect is the transition era which will be characterized by mixed traffic (where CAVs and human-driven vehicles (HDVs) share the roadway). Consistent with expectations that CAVs will improve road safety, on-road CAVs may adopt rather conservative control policies, and this will likely cause HDVs to unduly exploit CAV conservativeness by driving in ways that imperil safety. A context of this situation is lane-changing by the CAV. Without cooperation from other vehicles in the traffic stream, it can be extremely unsafe for the CAV to change lanes under dense, high-speed traffic conditions. The cooperation of neighboring vehicles is indispensable. To address this issue, this paper develops a control framework where connected HDVs and CAV can cooperate to facilitate safe and efficient lane changing by the CAV. Throughout the lane-change process, the safety of not only the CAV but also of all neighboring vehicles, is ensured through a collision avoidance mechanism in the control framework. The overall traffic flow efficiency is analyzed in terms of the ambient level of CHDV-CAV cooperation. The analysis outcomes are including the CAVs lane-change feasibility, the overall duration of the lane change. Lane change is a major source of traffic disturbance at multi-lane highways that impair their traffic flow efficiency. In providing a control framework for lane change in mixed traffic, this study shows how CHDV-CAV cooperation could help enhancing system efficiency.
This study considers the problem of periodic event-triggered (PET) cooperative output regulation for a class of linear multi-agent systems. The advantage of the PET output regulation is that the data transmission and triggered condition are only needed to be monitored at discrete sampling instants. It is assumed that only a small number of agents can have access to the system matrix and states of the leader. Meanwhile, the PET mechanism is considered not only in the communication between various agents, but also in the sensor-to-controller and controller-to-actuator transmission channels for each agent. The above problem set-up will bring some challenges to the controller design and stability analysis. Based on a novel PET distributed observer, a PET dynamic output feedback control method is developed for each follower. Compared with the existing works, our method can naturally exclude the Zeno behavior, and the inter-event time becomes multiples of the sampling period. Furthermore, for every follower, the minimum inter-event time can be determined textit{a prior}, and computed directly without the knowledge of the leader information. An example is given to verify and illustrate the effectiveness of the new design scheme.
